Fladeland was born in Winona, Minnesota in 1861 and moved to Portland, North Dakota as a young adult where he bought Forbes and Soldahl drug stores and managed the move theatre in town. After moving to North Dakota, the pharmacist ended up owning drug stores in Sutton, Luverne, and Bottineau.

Some of the terms in the treaty were: Peace and Friendship shall be perpetual, payments held in trust, Laws against liquors in Indian Country, Rules and regulations to protect the rights of persons and property amount the Indians.

Many cities in the u.s have been affected by the Oil boom, countless have made millions on this product. Oil isn 't always easy to find, as a matter of fact, it can be very difficult. Often times oil seeps to the top of the surface, making it easy to find, but most of the time people have to drill to find it. In the earlier days rigs could only work on land, however now we can use oil platforms to get oil from under sea beds. Many towns like Bainville and Watford city are being affected very heavily because of the oil, changes include: growth of population, riots, and heavy construction. Not all the people in these towns support and agree with the pipeline, which oftentimes leads to protests and riots. Many protests have ended in arrests because of the violence they promote. Many people across North Dakota have been taking drastic measures such as blocking highways and roads, killing livestock, and violent fights. These people are upset because this pipeline runs across some sacred burial sites of the ancient Native American tribe leaders. The Bakken Shale formation is one of the largest oil and gas industries, it covers over 200,000 square miles in just North Dakota, Montana, and Canada.(Carter,2013) The pipeline is 12inches wide and travels over 500 miles across the US. So far, between North Dakota and eastern Montana they have produced 1 billion barrels of oil. In just North Dakota, jobs are very easy to find in the oil industry.
In Bill McKibben’s article, “Why Dakota Is the New Keystone,” McKibben expresses through vivid word choice, aggressive tone, and sentence structure, why the New Keystone pipeline should be in the Dakota’s. He brings together these elements to paint a vivid picture to persuade the reader into believing it too. McKibben uses words that clearly show what he wants the reader to picture and shows how he wants to shape this piece. He illustrates this by stating that there are “shocking images of the National Guard destroying tepees and sweat lodges and arresting elders” (McKibben).
For the past several months, Native Americans have been peacefully protesting an oil pipeline being placed on their tribal ground, along the banks of Missouri. This was explained by Bill McKibben in the article he wrote, “Why Dakota Is the New Keystone.”
Do you want the oil to stay or to leave North Dakota? While this is going on in Dickinson North Dakota some people like it and some hate it. It started happening in April 2014 through November 2015. Therefore if people keep complaining about the oil they will run out of items they use in their everyday life. Even more people will be mad about the oil if they own land and it gets torn up or dug up for oil. They also use oil to put on roads and paint what kids use most days. Some people don’t like the oil because it is loaded on trains and those trains have even blown up before. The people that generally care about the oil are the people working there and making money on it. Some reasons why people like the oil in North Dakota are because
In general the weather varies between the different parts of the United States and the Middle East. More specifically, there are many differences in the weather between Iraq (where I used to live in the Middle East) and North Dakota (where I currently live). One of these differences is that the weather is too hot in the Comparing to Iraq, North Dakota weather is really nice in the summer, it gets a little hot for a few days but then it turns back to the nice weather. Also, in North Dakota it gets cloudy and rains in the summer. However, North Dakota winter is freezing. The temperature drops to -60 degrees (-51 Celsius) and snowfall reaches 16.8 inches in December. Therefore, in the winter people don’t walk or exercise outside. Unlike Iraq,
Fargo, North Dakota. Need I say more? Ok well, maybe Fargo isn’t exactly a city that never sleeps, especially considering most intersections are vacant come 10 pm, but while the adjacent suburbs are going through the motions of urban sprawl in the worst way the downtown area acts as an example other cities can learn from. North Dakota held two of the top five fastest-growing metro areas in the latest national census. Yahoo recently pegged Fargo as one of the hottest zip codes in America, citing the large influx of millennials and recent grads settling in the city. When you think of Fargo why you would is beyond me, you don’t think of a burgeoning tech industry or multimillion dollar apartment developments, but once you get past the man in
In the spring of 2016, an environmental movement began in North Dakota that today, is making history. In Cannonball, North Dakota, Native Americans have gathered to protest the Dakota Access Pipeline; resulting in one the largest gatherings of Native Americans from multiple tribes the United States has witnessed in over a century (Northcott, 2016). One tribe in particular, the North Dakota Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, have been leading and organizing the protest against the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline. The Standing Rock reservation is located in the Sioux and Ziebach counties within the North Dakota and South Dakota border; the Sioux people are the primary tribe of the area. According to Trymaine Lee of MSNBC, the counties are a part of the top 10 poorest counties in the country, and that it has a history with water distresses. In the early 1960s, five dams located at Lake Oahe in Standing Rock gave way and flooded 200,000+ acres, destroying nearly all natural resources and wildlife at the river bottom, as well as destroying towns within the reservation and sacred ancestral lands and sites. This was a devastating tragedy for the people of Standing Rock, and it seems that history is repeating itself with the proposed construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline. The pipeline poses many hazardous threats, and these threats outweigh any economic benefit the proponents may promise. It threatens the environment, water supplies, historical land, and only adds to the
What is happening at the moment in Standing Rock, North Dakota, is depressingly similar to the 1990 Oka Crisis.
