The United States Department Of Defense Defines Terrorism

All of the definitions that the author has presented tend to share a common theme. In each of the previous definitions, the use of force that is intended to coerce or sway a course of action that furthers a social, or political goal. In most cases, the FBI definition is the one most widely used and accepted by law enforcement entities (National Institute of Justice). The author seconds that the FBI definition is the one that she agrees with the most. The FBI definition seems like the only one that doesn’t leave anything out. It is the most descriptive, and unlike the American Heritage definition, it broadens the scope of terrorists from being a certain type of group to the possibility of it being just one man or woman.

The Pakistani government was involved in an attack on Mumbai that killed over one hundred and fifty people. The captured militants who executed the attack were never brought to proper justice, an incarcerated terrorist confessed that Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence agency aided the attack, and the Pakistani government freed the militant group’s commander for no plausible reason. Pakistan has denied all accusations of its’ involvement but evidence shows that they played a key role in this devastating siege.

The United States has not been able to eradicate the Taliban in Afghanistan because of two main reasons: the corruption within the Afghan security forces and the Pakistani government 's support of the Afghan Taliban. Internal to the country, the corrupt practices of the Afghan Army leaders and police officials include selling American-issued weapons and ammunition to the Taliban insurgents. The corruption results in members of the Taliban to remain strong and well equipped with American weapons and ammunitions. External factor, the government of Pakistan (ISI –Inter-Service Intelligence) or army intelligence supports the Afghan Taliban by financing their military operations, training them and providing sanctuary for members of the Taliban. For these two reasons which will be addressed with details, America has not been able to defeat the Taliban insurgent group in Afghanistan since 2001.

The U.S. State Department defines terrorism, according to Piazza (2006), “premeditated, politically motivated violence perpetrated against noncombatant targets by sub national groups or clandestine agents, usually intended to influence an audience” (p. 165). Throughout history, labor disputes have often been accompanied by terror and resistance movements. Terrorism dates way back in history, but political terrorism only dates back to the last century and is regarded as a new phenomenon. For example, Afghanistan has seen conflict since it was created as a county. The most notable is the terror of the terrorist group the Taliban. The Taliban rose to power when commanders imposed heavy costs on trades between Pakistan and Afghanistan. Many people had to adapt to the high risk environment created by the commanders and this spurred the acts of violence. Today conflict is evident throughout the country. What is the cause of modern political terrorism? There are many schools of thought on why a modern country will experience terrorism. In this paper I focus on the theory of a poor economy fueling acts of terror and the different schools of thoughts that focus on this subject. An economy is influenced by many categories. Many of these categories, such as the gap between wealthy and poor, economic and resource distribution, socioeconomic status, employment, and social welfare and policy all account for a country’s economy. The Central Intelligence Agency defines terrorism as “premeditated, politically motivated violence perpetrated against noncombatant targets by subnational groups or clandestine agents” (CIA). This term was specifically created to differentiate terrorism between other acts of violence. These doings of terrorism are not just any act but are specific acts of violence. A dominant reason behind terrorism tends to fall upon religious beliefs and culture ties.

The Taliban is an Afghani and Pakistani terrorist group. They are a large organization, with a religious base. The group, like several other terrorist organizations, have extremist views in relation to Islam. They operate primarily in the Middle East, but also operate elsewhere in the world. In this paper the focus will be on the Taliban’s relationship with the world outside of their comfort zone.
