“Some people build fences to keep people out… and other people build fences to keep people in.” - August Wilson. Fences can be perceived everyday while driving down the road, although you do not know the actual reason people assemble them. They can signify barriers or even security. Fences can be observed as a positive or negative element. In the play Fences by August Wilson, fences are used to symbolize a unique perspective regarding Troy, Rose, and Cory.

To Troy, fences are used to separate himself and other people. Troy believes a fence helps him keep his feelings and emotions detached from everybody else. A conversation develops when Bono confronts Troy about cheating on Rose, “That’s why I don’t want to see you hurt her. But what you gonna do when she find out? What you got then? If you try and juggle both of them… sooner or later you gonna drop one of them.” (Wilson 2.1 63). Troy uses the fence as a way to isolate himself from Rose. The construction of the fence directly relates to the commitment that Troy has for Rose. Troy takes many years to finish the fence because he is not dedicated to building it, which is similar to Troy not being dedicated to his relationship with Rose. …show more content…

Rose wants to preserve her family for as long as she can. Bono expresses Rose’s feelings to both, Troy and Cory while they are building the fence, “Rose wants to hold on to you all. She loves you.” (Wilson 2.1 61). Rose wants the fence to hold in her family but she also wants Cory and Troy to bond with each other. She genuinely loves her family and she hopes to repair the wounds between her husband and her
