Describe the skills or attributes you believe are necessary to be an outstanding teacher.
While there are many ways to be an outstanding teacher, every high-quality teacher should, in my opinion, have these skills and dispositions:
• A focus on relationships. This includes relationships with students, relationships with parents, relationships with other teachers, relationships between students, relationships between content areas, and so on. Building excellent relationships with other individuals, especially students, is vital to being an excellent teacher, no matter the grade level or content area.
• Always growing and seeking to improve their practice, learning from their mistakes. Teaching is not a profession that is the same every

Outstanding teachers know their stuff! They know what they are teaching and how to teach it so that students will understand and be able to use their knowledge in multiple contexts.
• Reflective. Outstanding teachers take time to reflect on their own practice and on student learning, asking themselves questions and really seeking to find the answers. Part of being reflective is using data to inform future teaching, really wrestling with the numbers and information we get from students about their learning so that we can modify our instruction to best suit their needs.
• Solid classroom management/community. Have you ever been in a classroom that could “run itself”? It probably belonged to an outstanding teacher. Phenomenal teachers craft a classroom that is a community, where all learners are able to grow in relationships, knowledge, and maturity. Systems are in place to make the classroom run smoothly so that time can be spent on more important things than where to put homework in the morning.
• Give back to the school beyond the classroom. The school is a community, just like the classroom should be. One of the best ways to make that community more beneficial to all its members is to give back. Outstanding teachers know this and put it into practice, whether it is coaching a sport, volunteering with PTO activities, serving on a committee, or supporting other teachers.
• Remember why we are here. In the craziness of mandates and
What is a good teacher? A good teacher is a immeasurably valuable factor in someone’s education. Of course there are many different types of teacher in life, but in this case I am referring to a classroom teacher. First and foremost a teacher must be there because they want to teach, not just
An outstanding teacher is the master of content knowledge. Every outstanding teacher has the following qualities in order to success in teaching: professionalism, flexibility, availability, concern, respect and mastery of content knowledge.
Teachers which excel in the profession of education are those who are continuous learners. At the end of the day, teachers who continuously focus on bettering themselves, their classroom, and adapt their learning environment to meet environmental changes, excel in the profession. A teacher which strives to excel is critical of themselves. They work to improve their lesson plans even when they feel they are perfect. A teacher which excels uses veteran teachers as
Describe your personal feelings and beliefs about teaching, including your own ideas of what makes you an outstanding teacher.
I believe an exemplary teacher is also one who truly cares about their students, academically and personally, and builds relationships with their students so they can be the best resource possible for their students to succeed. Building and maintaining relationships with students can make teaching more effective because when you earn the students’ trust, they are more likely to engage in class and come to you for help. Teachers should also know how to apply classroom management strategies in their classroom to make teaching time as effective as possible. Classroom management is using techniques that maintain a healthy, productive learning environment, relatively free of behavior problems (Woolfolk, 2014).
As an effective teacher I believe that in order to lead a classroom you must first have a deep understanding and be willing to collaborate experiences that will promote the learning inside of your classroom. I believe that the characteristics first begin with being organized and prepared, and having an in depth understanding of each subject
With my experience as a teacher, skills, and attributes that are necessary to be an outstanding teacher. To be passion, leadership, and good classroom management and up to date content knowledge. A teacher has to be able to accommodate the academic, social, and emotional needs of all of their students. Engages all students into each lesson so they feel like they are part of the classroom community. Skill and outstanding teacher cater to all students’ diverse learning styles. Doing his/her work an outstanding teacher is not only a leader but a good listener. In conclusion, an outstanding teacher is to be a role model to all students, must always handle each situation in an appropriate way. So that his/her students can learn from those situations
I believe an outstanding teacher must differentiate, have good behavior management skills, content knowledge, collaboration, and passion. Teachers need to have the ability to understand students and their abilities. By doing this, teachers will be able to deliver lessons based on their abilities. Managing behavior is no easy task; you need to create a safe and welcoming environment for the students to feel like they are part of the classroom. Teachers need to be able to deliver content in a way students will be able to comprehend no matter what level they might be at. An outstanding teacher always plans before delivering a lesson, strives to improve, and uses many different strategies to teach. Collaboration is key to growing as a first
There are countless theories and examples of what makes an outstanding teacher, Geoff Petty states “good teachers are not born, nor are they made by tutors. They make themselves. What’s more, anyone can teach well. Research shows that there is no personality type that makes a good teacher.”(Petty, 2010, p.516). Lowell Milken argues “the most direct and enduring way to reach the mind and imagination of the learner is through the mind, imagination and personal character of the outstanding teacher”. (Merrow, 2009).
It’s easy to become a mediocre teacher. To be a good, even great, teacher is hard work and dedication. Maria Orlando gives 9 characteristics of a great teacher, here are just a few I agree with: a teacher who respects students, creates a sense of community and belonging in the classroom, has his/her own love for learning and growing, continuously collaborates with other educators, and maintains professionalism in all areas. Adding onto this list with a few of my own characteristics I possess are: a teacher who is pleasant to be around, sensitive to the students needs/feelings, enthusiastic, hardworking, committed, driven, and organized. To become a great teacher, I intend on continuing to work hard and stay committed to my goal. Even when I think I’ve reached my destination, I will continue to find new ways to
According to Wong, the characteristics of a classroom that has highly effective classroom management are: “The students are deeply involved with their work, especially with academic, teacher-led instruction. Students know what is expected of them and are generally successful. There is relatively little wasted time, confusion, or disruption. The climate of the classroom is work-oriented, but relaxed and pleasant.”(pg86)
The main characteristic of a good/effective teacher is one that actually cares about his/her students. When I was in high school, I had a teacher that specifically worked with me in English because I could not learn the rules of English the way that other kids could. She actually cared enough about my education to take time to work with me which led me to a more successful high school career. I learned better the way she taught me because she gave great instruction.
Teaching is a difficult occupation. Teachers play an important part in training children, teenagers… So, a good teacher must have some special qualities. They are: knowledge, creation, confidence, empathy, sense of humor and passion.
I feel the most important characteristics of effective teacher are passion, perseverance, patience and creative. Passion motivates people to excel. People who are passionate about their work love what they do. They find purpose in their calling – a purpose that drives them to work hard, to learn along the way, and to achieve more than they have ever accomplished before. Their work challenges them and pushes their abilities to their limits. The challenge excites them. It forces them to think, to learn and to grow. And, amidst this excitement, it is almost as if their work becomes play. I have strong passion and enthusiasm whenever I teach young children. I believe what I am doing will make a difference. Through teaching, the sense of accomplishment and challenge could always sustain and motivate me.
What distinguishes a good teacher from a great teacher? Traditionally, a teacher was defined as an educator who instructed students in a classroom. Nowadays we no longer look at a teacher as a respected figure who educates a room full of children but as a motivator, a knowledgeable and approachable member of the community who is there to make a student reach his/her maximum potential. Effective teaching basically comes down to the characteristics a teacher upholds. Throughout this assignment, these characteristics will be questioned and analysed alongside the roles a teacher plays in a classroom and also alongside the video of Melcombe Primary School of year five maths, in which
