In mythology heroes regularly jockey for position to be known as the greatest ever. Edith Hamilton’s Mythology comprises the ancient, mythological short stories of the Greeks and Romans. These stories range from kings and heroes to lost lovers taking their lives. The main focus on the heroes who all partake in glorious adventures and exploits like the robust Hercules or wise Theseus. The greek myth of Hercules is one of the most popular myths ever told. It tells of his strength courage and perseverance. Folklore and tales have been present throughout many centuries. Depending on the culture and location some tales get changed in order to fit in and relate to the current generation. However, often the tales remembered are used for inspiration for new stories, novels, and movies. With new stories being made mythology has eventually just become a loose reference in which the main points of classic mythology get lost. Disney’s Hercules is a great example of Greek mythology tales being used as a lesson to create an impactful story in which mythology was simply a reference. Although the Disney version of Hercules makes suitable points in describing Greek Mythology and ensuring that it’s viewers are somewhat erudite of the myths; Such as introducing heaven, the underworld, Zeus, Hera, additional gods, and incorporating various characters and creatures, it still contains discrepancy in which events actually happened in mythology.
Greek myths are stories that explain the meaning of life and teach moral lessons through the values of heroes, gods and mortals. In Ancient Greece, myths were an important part of the culture, first being told orally and in poems, then seen in architecture and theatre. Homer, the Greek poet, wrote epic poems such as the Iliad and the Odyssey, which are still revered and read extensively today. Greek myths have carried over to contemporary American culture, appearing in movies, children’s toys, clothing and books and the values of Greek myths are entrenched in today’s society. Notably, heroism is a prominent value that plays a major role in Greek mythology and continues to influence American culture today, as heroes inspire society with their nobility, bravery and patriotism.
Myths consists of many legendary heroes within, but what makes them different from an ordinary person. Many convey that it is not very challenging to be a hero, but wise ones know the struggles of being a hero, which the texts “Theseus” and “The Adventure of Odysseus”, written in the book “Mythology” by Edith Hamilton proves. Heroes may require help from others, but more often than not, they are fearless fighters who do not need the aid of others to be successful. Heroes might easily gain credits for the work of their fellow allies, but that does not mean it is easy to be a hero. A true hero should not be afraid of pain or death just like the great legend Theseus. At the same time, these heroes must be like the extraordinary hero Odysseus, who is successful in his heroic journey.
In conclusion, Hercules lived a long life of heroism and adventure. His heroic journey ultimately applies several of the stages of heroism. It is possible to relate many other mythological stories to Campbell’s stage
One very interesting aspect of the human experience is the manner in which certain themes appear again and again over time, in literature, religion, mythology, and culture regardless of the geographic location, the economic status, and the time period. Perhaps it is the innate human need to explain and explore the known and unknown, but to have disparate cultures in time and location find ways of explaining certain principles in such similar manner leads one to believe that there is perhaps more to myth and ritual than simple repetition of archetypal themes. In a sense, then, to acculturate the future, we must re-craft the past, and the way that seems to happen is in the synergism of myth and ritual as expressed in a variety of forms (Bittarello)
Hercules can be viewed as one of the very first epic heroes, but the road to being known as an epic hero you can argue was a lot harder for Hercules. Hercules is known from Greek mythology for his great strength and endurance, but what some people don’t know about Hercules is the struggle and hardships of his life. Now, I know you’re probably wondering how hard the life of a literal god can be, but Hercules wasn’t any ordinary god. Hercules real mother was a mortal woman named Alkmene and his father was the great Greek God Zeus. Hercules’ life is portrayed through ancient Greek mythology and the 1997 film Hercules. Both these sources show that Hercules is an epic hero, but he may also be the most unlikely epic hero of them all.
In 1997, Disney released the movie Hercules, an adaptation of popular Heracles myth from Ancient Greek mythology. The movie is about titular character Hercules and his journey to become a real hero. Even this statement sounds like Homer’s The Odyssey for Hercules adapted not only The Odyssey but many myths in a harmonious and subtle way to achieve a family-friendly movie, both entertaining to those who are interested in mythology and who are just casual audiences. To create this kind of effect to audiences, Disney mixed well-known stories and characters with tonned-down mature content with allusions to American culture.
Amazon’s fighting was up to par with the male heroes they faced. They valued comradery, much like Greek hoplites. They are associated with land to the East of Greece, especially Scythia. To begin this study, we must first discuss those of which the Amazons are based on, the Scythian women. Located northeast of Greece was the Scythian homeland, land that is now modern day Russia and south-eastern Europe. It was there that many nomadic tribes lived. These people learned how to ride horseback at a young age, and spent their entire lives traveling with their respective tribes. Men and women lived as equals, wore trousers, covered themselves with tattoos, and participated in archery. Greece was very close to Scythian nomads that lived near the Black Sea. Their land was a “boundless, uncultivated sweep,” compared to Greece which itself was littered with small towns and farmland. Also, the idea of a woman that found herself equal to a man was unfamiliar to the Greeks. Understandably, the Greeks felt threatened by such a lifestyle, but they were also fascinated. Strong, ferocious women that rode horseback and participated in combat were otherworldly and almost unreal. Early Grecian storytelling surrounding Amazons originally featured male Scythian allies, who would follow the Amazons into battle. In these
The Amazons were a group of warrior women who fought many of the great Greek heroes.
