Administration sets the tone and time for collaboration. It is imperative for school to have educators and staff to work in collaborative teams. The common goal is student achievement. Through respect and partnership the fulfillment can be endless. This year I was invited to be the Positive Behavioral Support Internal Coach for my K-8 school. I accepted and quickly learned that collaboration and organization are key components to a successful team. At first, the focus should be members of the team or group. Asking for volunteer is a great way to get started. People are more apt to commit and put the effort into the cause when they want to be there; however, administration may appoint or suggest people because of their insight to …show more content…
I am in favor of a democratic way for decisions making; therefore I would expect cooperation in any resolution. During the course of one of my PBS meetings, a goal was determining the requirements for students to attend a PBS celebration. In a prior meeting each of the members had a 1-2 minutes to express their concerns about PBS being just for behavior, failing grades may not be a behavior in elementary grades, but may be in middle school. The task for each member was to discuss it with their grade levels and come back ready to vote. At the next meeting we voted on three choices, only office discipline referrals, office discipline referrals and failing grades of only middle school students, office discipline referrals and failing grades for the K-8th grade. The vote came to 7 to 1 that students could not have office discipline referral and could not fail (59.4% or below) a core class. During a staff meeting for PBS implementation and data review, other staff members didn’t not agree with the requirements, but through the PBS team we had democratic evidence that it was a collaborative effort of the team. Other teams, committees and task forces work should work in the same manner. There are grade level teams that should be discussing standards that can be crossed within curriculum. Department teams should be vertically planning to account for deficiencies within the standard progression. For example, in a PLC we discussed writing across the
Positive leadership is important for effective team performance. Everyone needs to work together and be focused by supporting each other to achieve shared goals. It is very important that each member of the team is clear on their roles and responsibilities. Staff should have respect and understanding for their manager. The manager needs to be aware of the skills and the weaknesses within the team and be able to provide support when necessary. Training and support improves staff performance and develops confidence and team spirit.
Over the course of this semester my view on leadership has changed many times. In the beginning of this class I thought the only real definition of leadership came from the dictionary. Then we wrote our leadership lens part 1 and my view changed. I changed my definition of leadership to a person that has the ability to bring people together to make a change or to make a situation better for everyone. Now while writing this leadership lens part 2 and having finished this class my definition of leadership has changed once again. Now my definition of leadership is that leadership is in everyone it just shows at different times. Throughout this class my view on leadership has changed so much because we’ve done so many different activities and
Collaboration in a school setting refers to teachers working together to form an effective classroom and lesson for learning. “Teacher assistance teams (TAT) are school-based teams of professionals, classroom teachers, and administrators that assist classroom teachers in meeting the instructional and
In many aspects of life, it is essential that you work with other individuals as a team. You can work in a team whether it is school, work, or your personal life. This year I started working for Inner City Education Foundation public charter schools, specifically ICEF Inglewood Elementary Academy. The school has approximately 40 staff members that were all placed together by the director of the school. There are multiple classifications at my job such as instructional assistants, teachers, office staff, intervention specialists, operations, and janitors, but we all operate as one unit. Through the five stages of team development, our team developed and continues to develop into a successful team.
I approach collaboration as a team player, and I believe students need more than one person to guide them to their full educational potential. Also, active and prepared participation of weekly PLC meetings with the teachers of my special education students to plan collaborative curriculum have increased results in math and reading substantially. Participating in co-teaching furthers my repertoire of knowledge to assist my students. I have learned a vast amount from sharing and consulting with colleagues regarding students, observing mentoring teachers, and planning activities to ensure growth in students.
Collaborative efforts have created more cross-curricular focus throughout the school. When teachers know what each other are teaching, they can support each other in their own curriculum.
Collaboration between teachers is a key component to professional development that will lead to higher student achievement. There is a need for schools to set up time for teachers to be able to collaborate together. This allows for teachers to help each other, matchup content, teach each other new and best practices, troubleshoot student issues just to name a few of the areas that collaboration time can help foster within a school. The key is to build time for teachers to be able to collaborate during the school day or week. This collaboration time needs to be between grade levels, departments, and cross curricular when needed. For many schools this is an afterthought to the school schedule or a fleeting thought after the master schedule is completed. A principal needs to keep an open mind to any strategy that will enable the teachers to be able to collaborate for the good of the students and the school.
Effective leadership also comes with great collaboration in an organization internal and external. Leadership must constantly involve staff in collaboration. Early in a new program's life a centralized focus must provide the leader a number of benefits: management of external stakeholders, management of informational needs, funding of the program, and management support. Providing teachers and administrative teams to collaborate on on-going and future issues will help empower and motivate to take ownership in the organization. In an educational environment school leaders must collaborate with staff through PLC's which are team meetings, faculty and staff meetings, school improvement committees, teacher appraisals periods (PDAS), and even casual conversation.
According to Crittenden, and Lyons (2014), two areas setting high-performing schools apart from low performing schools is essentially collaboration and communication. I realize the importance of collaboration whether it be with a neighbor teacher, my grade-level teachers, or my content area teachers. In my school, we have scheduled meeting with each group of educators. It is my desire to see a more structured use of the time. Oftentimes, we attend one of these meetings and spend time complaining about students or parents. An improvement would be to better structure our time together as to be more productive. I believe that the administration should have an accountability system in place to insure time is utilize
During my second preclinical experience at Westview Hills Middle School, I learned the importance of cooperation and collaboration among teachers at a school. I was able to observe team and department meetings during this experience. It became clear that it is important for teachers to work together in order to provide a positive atmosphere at a school and in a specific department. Although it became obvious that personalities and teaching styles were different throughout the school, the teachers still acted professionally and used each other as resources in
We have to continually evaluate and reevaluate and change and develop new plans, trash old ones, and continually seek to uncover specific-small issues. It is time consuming. A lot of times I feel like I need to be grading essays. Fortunately, I have seen that if we put the time in...it works. We are a very effective group. We don’t have a lot of wasted time. In our meetings, they are focused, start on time and end on time. There is really no way to actually “solve” this issue of time. All of us are good about “sticking to the plan” that we have decided upon. If we decide on a specific grading policy or rule, we follow it. We try to be a unified front on how we grade, re-evaluate, our rubrics, and our subject areas. We are consistent across the board. It takes a good amount of compromise, but when faced an anomaly, we can work through it
Although some teams may follow Leading Teams Note (2009) solution in reality, it is very hard to accomplish it correctly. Maybe I am a little biased from my past experiences in the federal government. In my opinion, most team leaders and members know what requires to be a good team. I have never been on a good team, or I have failed to be a good leader of my team. I have been to team building, leadership, and management training covering how to build, lead and, work together. There is only one thing I can think of why teams don’t work well in federal government. The answer is no one can control teams other than senior management includes team member selection or getting up the goals. Goals and members are normally given to team leaders in federal.
The nature of an effective a senior leadership team (SLT) will be the topic of this essay. The idea of team work and various models of SLT will be covered linking their roles, strategy, values and pitfalls. I will interlace this essay with some personal experience and relevant literature Belbin and Fullan to conclude through an historical analogy, my personal understanding of what SL T represents.
The topics discussed by Northouse, Kouzes, and Posner are team leadership. Team leadership are work units that have are interdependent and share common goals (Northouse,2016). In this week?s unit, team leadership will be explained through the Hill Model for Team Leadership and how it applies to team effectiveness. Furthermore, virtual and non-virtual team will be compare and contrast and how to create cohesiveness. Team leadership theory is the key to developing success high performing teams.
All four processes- collaboration, consultation, teamwork, and co-teaching, as they occur in the school context, involve interaction among school personnel, families, and students working together to achieve common goals. (Dettmer, Dyck, Thurston, 2005, p. 7)
