Artificial intelligence, or AI for short, is “the intelligence exhibited by machines or software.” AI is found in many forms in our society, from video games to traffic predictions to the autocorrect in our phones. When machine personalities are no longer distinguishable from human ones, however, there will be implications for humanity. This advancement will at first be met with skepticism, and the first people to interact with these AI will not consider them sentient beings. One of the hottest topics that modern science has been focusing on for a long time is the field of artificial intelligence, the study of intelligence in machines or, according to Minsky, “the science of making machines do things that would require intelligence if done by men”.(qtd in Copeland 1). Artificial Intelligence has a lot of applications and is used in many areas. “We often don’t notice it but AI is all around us. It is present in computer games, in the cruise control in our cars and the servers that route our email.” (BBC 1). With today’s technology we haven’t found a way for a computer to think for itself.  This can only happen with the potentialities that will develop over time.  The future may hold great opportunities for this new found world.

Nonetheless, many advances in the field have been made, with focus on Machine Learning, Neural Networks, Expert Systems, and Fuzzy Logic. There’s no doubt that Artificial Intelligence makes life easier for humans, It can help us in our day to day to day lives when someone needs directions to their new workplace or a quick answer to a question. However, this new technological system is really only helpful to a certain extent.

Artificial intelligence had always been a product of science fiction movies. From friendly robots that help each other get off a distant planet in Wall-E to robots having the ability to fall in love with humans in Her and Ex-Machina to droids helping the Jedi Knights in Star Wars, artificially intelligent robots have been a presence to my generation on the big screen. However, after deciding early in my college career that I wanted to study computer science, the world of artificial intelligence became a reality. Meeting with Professor John E. Laird was the first step in opening that door.

Two words that we all think we know fairly well are the words ‘artificial’ and ‘intelligence’. When asked, people will suggest that ‘artificial’ can be defined as fake, phony, not real, or made-up. When asked what ‘intelligence’ means, people will suggest the word being defined as smart, having knowledge, or being capable of certain or many tasks. Though when these words are brought together, it becomes unclear as to what these words mean, and what it means for something to be “artificially intelligent.”

The concept of artificial intelligence was first labeled by a man named Alan Turing in 1950, he believed that the future would hold the possibility for man to communicate with computers and sustain a conversation (Atkinson, Solar 1). Although, we have reached the point where it is possible to hold a simple preprogrammed conversation with a computer and give them the ability to learn, there is still a long way to go in making computers fully artificially intelligent. Atkinson and Solar continue to describe some real world applications of artificial intelligence such as, “Data mining technologies, fraud detection, and industrial-strength optimization” (8). In these examples, forms of artificial intelligence like cognitive reasoning abilities are already being used making the demand for them higher.

This is where computing models triggered by biological neural networks hope to give solutions to problems that arise in natural tasks. A neural network could get the relevent features from the input and perform pattern recognition by learning from examples. It doesn’t need the explicit stating of rules for performing the task.

There are many adversaries about this fact, that an excellent discussion on the Turing test is not supportive, with restrictions on the observer's knowledge of AI and the subject matter of questioning. It turns out that some people are easily misinterpreted that, a rather dumb program is intelligent. When we set out to design an AI program, we should attempt to specify as well as possible the criteria for success for that particular program functioning in its restricted domain.
