Recreational athletes, competitive athletes, high school athletes, college athletes, and professional athletes all have one thing in common: the risk of a concussion. It's impossible to go a season without one athlete from a team receiving a concussion. The more that these concussions are studied, the more we learn about them, such as their detrimental effects on athletes. Because of the risk of health issues and death that come with concussions, doctors, coaches, athletic trainers, and lawmakers are stepping in to protect athletes of all levels from receiving concussions. Concussions can truly mess with an athlete’s brain and can give him or her lifelong troubles. Many athletes of all ages and levels have had concussions that have affected their lives in unbelievable ways. Kevin Turner, a former professional football player in the National Football League, can certainly attest to this. Turner spent eight years playing professional football and while playing, acquired the title “Collision Expert”. Many called him this because of the countless deep notches he would receive in his football helmet during games. Since receiving the title of “Collision Expert”, Turner has retired from the NFL and has had to deal with the effects that have come along with those many notches in his helmet. Recently, Turner has been diagnosed with a form of Lou Gehrig’s disease. Scientists have studied Turner’s case and from research, they believe that his form of the disease is related to the many concussions and hard hits he received during his career in the NFL. Now, Turner has a difficult time doing simple tasks as his disease deteriorates his memory and health day by day. Turner has difficulty opening cereal boxes and buttoning shirts and even requires the help of his wife and daughter to help him get ready in the morning (Bartholet). CTE is a brain disease found in individuals with annals of head trauma. It has specifically been found in athletes with numerous concussions. So far it can only be diagnosed in the deceased, but Dr. Julian Bales and his staff in UCLA have discovered symptoms in living players such as Hall of Famer Anthony “Tony” Dorsett, Hall of Famer Joe DeLamielleure, and NFL All-Pro Leonard Marshall. CTE can cause memory loss, dementia, depression, suicidal thoughts, cognitive and emotional difficulties (Waldron par 1, 2, 3). Is it a compelling issue? A total of 171 concussions were reported in the NFL in the 2012-2013 season; 88 thus far in the 2013-2014 season (Frontline pt). Those are just numbers in the professional level. There are thousands of kids playing football either in youth, middle school, high school, or college level. The diagnosis is currently in progress, researchers are optimistic this could lead to a legitimate treatment, how to manage, and hopefully a cure. Furthermore, this can also possibly lead to an answer to a connection between football and chronic traumatic encephalopathy. He diagnost another player with CTE. After that, two other doctors connect concussions to dementia. Dr. Bailes and Dr. Guskiewicz wrote, “that the onset of dementia-related syndromes may be initiated by repetitive cerebral concussions in professional football players” (Ezell). This was the first major finding connecting football to brain injuries.

A concussion has potential to impact memory and coordination for the rest of the athlete 's life along with lead to other, more serious, brain injuries. Concussions are put into categories based on how long they are believed to last so doctors know how long to keep athletes out from strenuous activity. “Concussions are graded as mild (grade 1), moderate (grade 2), or severe (grade 3), depending on such factors as loss of consciousness, amnesia, and loss of equilibrium” (Lava ). With each grade, there are different symptoms and differences in how long they last.
Athletes in the 21st century are pushing themselves and their teammates to their limit, to try and be the best they can. Whether that is in a game situation, weight room, or practicing on the field, pool, or gym, accidents happen and can happen anywhere. It doesn’t matter if you are a guy or a girl, this accident happens to many athletes in a variety of sports. This sports injury is a concussion and it truly does affect any kind of athlete in any kind of sport. Concussions aren’t acquired in every sport, but they can happen. In the last few years concussions have become a growing problem for athletes from high school to professional athletes. Are concussions as bad as doctors and the news are making them out to be?
There could be several long-term effects after a concussion such as physical, emotional and cognitive damage. These symptoms are due to concussions, which cause skepticism, dismissiveness, difficulty completing tasks, self -esteem issues and headaches. Often victims of neurodegenerative diseases such as concussions, experience issues with short term memory and completing simple every day tasks. Although research does not show that there are any long-term effects to concussions in athletes as long as each injury is treated properly, these issues impact the daily lives of athletes. Each athletic department should continuously educate their athletes on concussion prevention and the long- term and short-term effects of concussions. Not only should they be educated on the effects and severity but also how to recognize whether they have incurred a concussion or not. A recent study of college football players has shown that those who participate in high contact sports and have had a concussion before have a 300% higher chance of having another one in comparison to athletes that have never had a concussion before (Jolicoeur et al, 2007). The NFL and NCAA have enacted several rule changes in order to minimize the occurrence of concussions. These new rules, like many before them, have come under the scrutiny of the very athletes that they were meant to protect. The NHL and NHL Players Association in 1997 together created a program in order to get a better understanding of concussions and how to prevent them (Burke et al, 2011).
