1. In what ways did ideas and values held by Puritans influence the political, economic, and social development of the New England colonies from 1630 through the 1660s?

Jamestown and the Massachusetts Bay Colony had many similarities and differences. Many of these differences were due to their physical location and climatic conditions. The success of both colonies can be contributed to strong leadership and the characteristics of the personalities of the settlers that inhabited each settlement. Many of the early problems in both settlements can be contributed to a lack of knowledge on the parts of the settlers along with attacks from neighboring Native American tribes.

Boston and New York are major American cities that have grown and prospered since Revolutionary times, in large part due to their location on the Atlantic seaboard. Both were, and continue to be, centers of commerce of ports of entry for visitors and immigrants. Despite some similarities, however, Boston and New York boast some striking differences, as Maier points out, in their people, their politics, in feeling, in character, and "in that wonderfully all-encompassing thing called culture." Maier further contends that, while both cities have naturally evolved since the eighteenth century, each had distinct characteristics evident from the beginning that influenced their development. These distinct characteristics can still be seen today.

After the first few struggling settlements in the New World progressed, more and more colonies sprung from the untested North American soil. Eventually, there were three main categories to the European colonies. They were each unique, although one certain class stood in stark contrast to the other two. This group, the Middle colonies, was a halfway point between the New England and Southern colonies – and not just geographically. The Middle colonies extracted parts of its neighbors, like farming habits and spiritual sects, but the middle group managed to retain its own flavor.

Although New England and the Chesapeake region were both settled largely by people of English origin, by 1700 the regions had evolved into two distinct societies. Why did this difference in development occur?

Although the Chesapeake and New England colonies were the earliest English colonies to flourish in the New World, they were both extremely different in the ways that they developed. Similarities between the colonies can be found, but the colonies were mostly different. The three different categorizations of colonies were different in a lot of ways, but also quite similar in many as well, being as they were all eventually ruled beneath the same country: England.
