Terrorism and the acts of terrorists are recognized by few as a new phenomenon, but known by many to be an old phenomenon. Terrorism has existed for decades and continues to thrive today. There are many definitions that were created to define terrorism and a terrorist act; however, the definitions are not one in the same. Essentially the definitions vary, and that depends on the person or organization providing the definition. The one often used or recognized is “terrorism is the use or threat of violence to achieve political objectives” (Gaines and Miller, 2014). This is the type of terrorism that the United States frequently experiences. Terrorist groups such as Al Qaeda, Boko Haram, or the Islamic State utilizes terrorist acts to punish the United States and to achieve their own personal objectives. Terrorist attacks have exacerbated tremendously over the past few years. This is largely due to the fact that terrorist groups are now more active in more countries than 9/11 (Bullock et al., 2013). Due to the growth of terrorist organizations and attacks, the United States is faced with new challenges. The challenges include: securing the United States from terrorism, homeland security growth and the possibility of another devastating terrorist attack. Even though these are challenges that are bound to affect the United States in some way, the United States is getting better equipped with preparing for terrorist attacks and the fallout of a terrorist attack.
