Summarise the policies and procedures of the setting relevant to promoting children and young people’s positive behaviour In my setting there are several policy documents that advise both parents and teachers what procedures are in place to help the children to perform to the best of their abilities and also set out guidelines of what the school expects off the staff, pupils and parents. Our schools behaviour policy also incorporates both the code of conduct, dealing with inappropriate behaviour and the rewards and sanctions guidelines, separate to this are the anti bullying policy and the whole school attendance policy . 2) The Headteacher, it is the responsibility of the head to implement the policy and to ensure all members of staff (both teaching and non-teaching) are aware of the policy and how to deal with any incidents that may arise. The head also reports to the governors about the effectiveness of the policy and if it needs amending. 3) The Teaching Staff, teaching staff should intervene at the first sign of any bullying, they must keep records of all incidents that happen involving children in their class, if they see another child from another class being bullied or bullying they should immediately inform that childs class teacher so they can intervene and monitor the situation. The best way to address bullying is to stop it before it starts. There are a number of things school staff can do to make schools safer and prevent bullying. First off, one must assess bullying within their school. In order to do this one should conduct assessments in their school to determine how often bullying occurs, where it occurs, and how students and adults may intervene. Later, one must assess their school to see if their prevention efforts are indeed working, or it they must look at the problem from a different perspective. Essentially, one must change the program around until they find a solution that works for their problem, as each school is different.
In a study taken by the American Medical Association it was reported that over 3.2 million students are victims of bullying each year. Out of these 3.2 million they found that approximately 160,000 teens skip school every day and 1 in 10 students drop out to school to escape from repeatedly being bullied. Reading these statistics, you can almost hear them call for someone to step up against this horrid and harassing act known as bullying. However, in a room full of bystanders, not one voice has the courage to stand up and intervene when someone is being bullied. As parents, the main goal to have should be obtaining every bit of information you can on what is happening in the lives of your child and teach them how they are capable of turning things around and stepping up against bullying by becoming an upstander.
A parent of a victim of bullying is hard because as a parent you want to always want to protect children and it’s hard to when their at school, out of reach but with these strategies it will be easier to help protect them. Schools first priority is the safety of their students but they don’t see what happens outside of the classrooms and in the hallways, but they do need to improve better and with these solutions it should be no problem. Teachers must examine their classroom environments daily and encourage students to report bullying, as well as feel comfortable to talk to teachers. Additionally, teachers need to be sober-minded about the significance of terms such as “there was drama” or “he was messing with me.” These are major clues that indicate bullying and need to be dealt with immediately. This topic of the course has helped me to differentiate between what is a policy and what a procedure is and increased my knowledge of the huge amount of different types of policies and procedures that a school must have in place in order to operate effectively. Setting policies is one of the primary means that governing bodies can use in order to perform their duty for setting the direction they want the school to take. Governing bodies are required by law to set certain policies whilst there are others that are just recommended as good practice for all settings. Policies and procedures provide a structure and direction for school life in each and every institution.
Bullying is an issue that parents should be aware of or make themselves aware of. Being bullied is very serious as it leads to depression and suicidal thoughts or suicide. (O’ Moore 206). All parents today should know the warning signs if their child is being bullied or if their child is the one bullying other children. Children should feel safe and comfortable in coming to their parent and letting them know that they are being bullied and parents should know how to help their child or where to go to get them help to prevent the bullying. If more parents took the time today to become informed of the seriousness of the issue of bullying and became educated on how to prevent it than children may actually have a better chance at a normal life. Parents should be more proactive in preventing bullying in children by educating themselves and knowing the warning signs of bullying to end bullying once and for all.
Bullying has been an issue in our schools for significant periods of time. As a teacher, I believe it is our responsibility to decrease this issue and to prevent it. There are many ways that a teacher could address bullying in the classroom. One way is by talking to the class about the issue, explaining that it hurts the victims feelings and it could lead to the victims death, making the bully feel responsible for the death of the victim for the rest of their life. The teacher could also expose videos from the victims point of view, of how they feel and how they see the bully. If teachers would step in when they knew something was a problem or stand up for a student, then the bullying could be eliminated. Along with the help from the faculty and staff students can also intervene to make things better for everyone. No child should fear coming to school because of the way they look or something that is different about them. Just as is was stated in one of our lectures, students should feel as though school is a safe place that they can be. Safe schools are “in which every individual can pursue their education on their willingness to work, free of fear persecution, and stigma” (Green 2016, notes). If a serious no tolerance policy is put into place, then things like this will be eliminated. The clubs and organizations that can be created will help the individuals feel as though they have someone to turn to when something is going on. Not only that but someone else is on their side, that can mean so much in any situation. If there is someone that will help stand up for them then the bullying will eventually stop or people will become aware of it, which should lead to some type of punishment. Teachers should also not be afraid to go to administration if there is a problem. It should not be held against them. But the “power is in numbers”, so if they can get more people on their side then more is likely to be done (Green 2016, notes). When dealing with someone who is being bullied they may often be upset and it’s very important to take the problem seriously. The child/young person must be listened to in a safe and confidential environment where they are able to express their distress without fear of being embarrassed and where they are free from reprisals. In any case of suspected bullying, concerns about possible signs or changes in behaviour should be reported to the designated person. It is necessary to take what the child says seriously as it will take a lot of courage to report it. Reassure the child that they are not to blame and explain that it will be need to be passed onto someone who can help them. Write down any observations or what has been said but keep the information secure. Never promise to keep the information a secret or draw conclusions, only report what has been noticed or reported. It is necessary to keep lines of communication open with the child concerned and to update them of any outcomes both, positive and negative. Support must be given on an ongoing basis so that they don’t feel as though they are alone.
