Drama Analysis Essay On December 2nd 1900, John Hossack was brutally murdered with an axe. Margaret Hossack, John’s wife, was the main suspect and was later convicted of first degree murder of her husband. (This was a big deal, big story.) Journalist and playwrighter Susan Glaspell, closely followed the case. (Ben-Zvi, pp 1616). As the trial went on and more about the Hossacks’ domestic life was revealed, Glaspell became increasingly more sympathetic with Margaret and picked up on the possible intent spawned by oppression from her husband. She wrote a play, Trifles, closely based off the Hossack trial. Glaspell explores the themes of role of power, women oppression, and (justice) in her play, Trifles.
Glaspell very simply demonstrates the men’s role of power through their authoritative positions as sheriff and county attorney, compared to the passive, yielding position of a domestic housewife. MRS. PETERS. (after taking a step) I’m not- cold (look up citation). Although, Mrs. Peters does not feel cold or see a need to come closer to the fire, she complies. It is almost an unconscious decision to obey after years of abiding to men’s orders. The next example is found near the end,
COUNTY ATTORNEY. Mrs. Peters doesn’t need supervising. For that matter, a sheriff’s wife is married to the law (jfiewfj). The county attorney assumes that Mrs. Peters will tell the truth because she is not seen as an individual that can think for herself.
