Influencing your community, changing the mindsets of others for the benefit of our ever so negative society, it is a job only fit for some, Those that take on this role in their community and or friend group seem to find an exhilarating feeling of satisfaction and happiness out of putting smiles on others. The beauty of it all is how many different ways someone can influence and change their surroundings, each task has its and no activity can be labeled as far more important. For one, and probably a more popular option, is student volunteering which in it of itself is a very wide range and vague topic. Another important way one can get into the minds of others would be through their own voice. By being able to share their message they are also practicing and improving their public speaking skills. In the end of the day all of these are the building blocks and the characteristics of a leader. It is for these leaders in our community that more schools county wide including Mater Lakes Academy should have a Student Influencers Club or a Student Council. A primary and foundation to influencing others is by just being able to help around the community. It is probably exactly for this reason that student volunteering began. Take for example Cardiff, the capital of wales, here in this city it is said that “ Student volunteering has been an integral part of Cardiff’s student community activities since the 1960’s,” (The Benefits Of Student Volunteering, Kathryn Harrington)
1. The two most important things I learned from my volunteering experience are that all kids need attention and positive support. Whether they effectively seek it out or not and that kids comprehend significantly more about what is going on than they can express in words and therefore the environment provided at child care centers can have a big impact on the child’s early development. While working with the kids I thought that it was anything but difficult to pay attention to the cutest kids who were continually smiling and needing my attention. The children who were the trouble makers, and the initial few times I volunteered, these were the children who got the majority of my time. For the shyer, less vocal kids I discovered I needed to try to collaborate with them and once they got more comfortable around me, they were more likely to need me to lift them up when they got hurt or scared or play with them. Through this experience I understood that the greater part of the kids required a lots of attention, even the ones who did not want it at consistently. I understood the significance of making each kid feel vital and cared for by adults. I discovered that the kids could see a great deal more about what was going ahead around them then I foresee. They knew a wide assortment of commands and phrases and could make wide associations between past encounters and their present surroundings. One funny example of this happened when I was reading a
Leadership is being able to guide other students into being the best they can be. I am a leader who is always positive and cheering others on to achieve their goals. At my school, I have a position as the Vice President of Academics in National Honors Society. Since I have obtained this position, I encourage other students in this group to participate in service projects which is where one volunteers to help out the community in some aspect. These volunteering opportunities are good thing to do because it builds character and it is always fun helping others out. As a leader, I bring new ideas to the table on where we should help out in the community and anything that we could do in school that would fun and helpful. Along with participating in National Honors Society at my school, I am also involved in our Student Government Association. Although I do not have a leadership position in this club, I still engage in the activities that we do. For the past two years, I have gone to an annual meeting for leadership where multiple schools attend. At this meeting there are fun activities where you learn more about leadership and how to be a good leader. As a leader, these meetings help because it is always good to learn new
The strongest example of my leadership and community involvement has been my service to my high school through Student Senate as the Student Body President. In this position I have been responsible for planning and coordinating events, running weekly morning meetings, giving speeches, communicating between my advisors and councilmen, and being an active leader in and out of the classroom. I’ve learned a lot about people while in this position, I have found a way to work with other people and their needs, as well as becoming a very effective communicator, and a great team player.
A leadership experience in what I positively influence others and helped resolve disputes was Link Crew. Link Crew is a program where we help incoming freshmen to high school and show them around school and help them out on anything they need like homework. When I was a link crew leader I helped many kids who had low grades. While I was in this program I noticed that many kids had low grades and didn't turn in work or even their homework I did my best and talked to them about how they will struggle so much to get there credits later on some kids listen and did all their work where they at least passed their classes with a D or C. I had people who I got to meet during this I communicated with many people who joined this program and helped many kids. Students who come to high school think it will be very easy like in middle school but it will get harder each year. Many times I was helping the students I feel like It influenced them to work harder and be better in school and help each other in some ways. Link Crew was such a good program that it was where others students helped other students. I showed many leadership experience by joining this program.
One experience I have had is getting to take part in peer coaching. In that class, I assist the Special Ed students with their school work, and help show them how to behave in class. When I explain to other students what the class is, they almost always say “I want to do that”. As an introverted leader, this is how I demonstrate my influence. I affect others by setting a strong example. I result to me taking this class, I am not just helping others who need
According to John Quincy Adams “ If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and becoming more, you are a leader.” Throughout my years in Mater Academy East, I have always strive to get the best grades possible. While inspiring others to do the same. I have been a member of The Cat Network for a year. The Cat Network is a non-profit corporation that is dedicated to save animals from the wrong hands. This non-profit corporation has taught me a lot about the importance of communication, helping out the community, and working in a team environment. I plan to use all my experience to Inspire and help students to achieve their goals.
Not only can it make a change, it promotes social, leadership, and communication skills which is almost imperative especially in today’s society. Many schools in America have volunteer work opportunities to teach adolescents these skills. It creates a drive and passion within students and communities as a whole as experienced myself. When doing volunteer work, not only is one helping their community and being socially responsible, they are helping the American
A community that I am actively involved in is the J.Kyle Braid Leadership Foundation also known as ELITE at my high school. The J.Kyle Braid foundation is a club that I take part in through my school, but is a nationwide foundation. In my second year of high school, I was chosen to take part in a leadership training at the J.Kyle Braid ranch in Colorado, where I met 19 other girls from different schools. I learned from working with peers who are leaders at their schools. Being surrounded with other teens who share my desire to make a difference, was a life-changing experience. I came back from the Ranch as a stronger, more effective leader to my peers and a more confident individual. With the connections to other schools, I was able to meet up with the other J.Kyle Braid leaders to talk about issues and events at school and share ideas for
To understand the importance of volunteering, I volunteered at one cultural event in San Antonio downtown. It was the festival of Diwali, a festival of light celebrate in India every year, organized by the San Antonio municipal and Indian Association. In San Antonio’s downtown we have a Riverwalk and the booth was on one side of river with the bleacher and on the other side was the stadium. Folk dances of India were performed on the stage. I volunteered at a booth of drink. My job was to sell soft drinks like coke for a dollar. I made a working there on the booth and we both had almost same interests due to that I was very surprised. There was also another booth next to us. I helped them to load, carry and organize their booth with food. This
I undertook 2 years of volunteering at the local nursing home, which allowed me to experience a new side of healthcare. Feeding and talking to elderly patients with dementia and Alzheimer’s highlighted the importance of empathy in the profession allowing the patients to trust you , along with learning the art of caring whilst working alongside and speaking to the carers. I am grateful to have the opportunity to experience the hidden and less glamorous parts where I witnessed the residents I worked with deteriorate over the time of a year, yet seeing her smile when she looked at me outweighed any pain that would have been caused. Knowing just talking and feeding the patients can make such a big difference in a patient’s life allows me to be
1. Looking back over the times you have volunteered at BIC , what did you find most surprising? Describe it in some detail. Why were you surprised?
As the subject of my Community project, I have chosen my classroom volunteer work from Foundations 2100 because though it was not an opportunity I specifically chose to go out of my way to go to, it provides me with an insight as to how there might be different cultures in the different communities I experience in different aspects of my life and by practice, it helps me to apply what I have learned in this class so far into such situations. For the past three Thursdays, I have volunteered in an English Language Learners Biology Assistance Classroom at Highline High School for my classroom volunteer work and have thus spent six hours so far assisting in as well as observing. The particular
Volunteerism enables students to gain the moral lesson that is vital to their life and develop their future interest. According to source 2, “community service teaches us through experience - about the relationship between empathy and responsibility, about what it takes to be part of a community, in essence, about human being”. While students are helping their community, they learn the crucial moral lessons in the most direct and impressive way. Through an actual experience of volunteering, students are reminded that it is their responsibility to serve for their community because they are a part of it. Helping without any feedback allows them to realize the power of empathy, the essential value that makes the society a
must influence others effectively. Being an influence to others can come in many different forms, and these forms can be best utilized in certain situations. The best way to influence others would be through communication, making this an essential skill for those wanting to become effective leaders. As a leader, one must adapt and refine any skills that are inadequate in order to better themselves and become a more efficient leader.
Nevertheless, the common misconception linked to graduating College students is that they are well-rounded adults, who have done their time and are ready and able to enter the working force and go on with their lives. The fact of the matter is that not all recent college students are mature and knowledgeable on their community and the world at large. “Teens who volunteer increase their knowledge of the world and the problems that face it” (“Youths”). This quote is not only applicable to teens, but college students as well; unfortunately, college students become isolated from the rest of the world while they are in their course of study and do not make time to give back to the community that helped them become who they are.
