You are walking down the street, and suddenly start coughing and wheezing, smoke filling your eyes and lungs as if you have just experienced walking past a fire. You’re Rushing to leave the area as if your life depended on it, and struggling to get some fresh air (fast tone). This is how the majority of people feel about public smoking. When will the government realize that public smoking is toxic to public health? (High pitch) Not only to the smoker but their surroundings as well including health, environment, and our future. Exposure to fumes can be just as unhealthy for a non-smoker as it is for the smoker. According to research, an estimated 1,323 Americans die each day from a smoking related illness. Homes, Cars, and work are all places where fumes are exposed. By allowing smokers to smoke in places such as these, we are not only putting them at risk, but also putting others at risk to be affected by smoking related problems. You are probably thinking, What if i dont smoke? (high tone). According to research, a number of diseases can be caught from second hand smoking including different types of cancers throughout the body, emphysema, asthma, and cardiovascular problems (Count with fingers)that you could be affected by. For example, the chance of lung cancer is increased by 16-19% when in contact with second hand smoke. Second hand smoke increases the risk of heart disease by 25-35%. In addition, children exposed to second hand smoke have an increased risk of colds, pneumonia, bronchitis, and asthma, which could lead to many hospitalizations, and in some cases even death. How many of you have seen someone flicking a cigarette onto a sidewalk? (Point at audience) According to research, Cigarette tips are the most commonly littered item around the world; around 4.5 trillion tips are being tossed worldwide per year! These chemically toxic tips end up contaminating water supply, and get eaten by aquatic creatures, making it harmful for animals, and us. You’re probably thinking, not every smoker litters, you are wrong! Each year nearly 600 million trees are destroyed to offer fuel to dry tobacco, to put in another way, one tree is destroyed every 300 cigarettes. Growing tobacco is another concern. It is particularly potassium hungry, and absorbs up to six times more than other crops, leaving soil in poor condition for food crops. Personally (Point to self) I find this a tragic concern and could affect future generations.

With today’s smoking habits, our future does not seem too good. (Low, disappointed voice) According to research Chemicals in tobacco smoke damage sperm, which might reduce fertility and harm fetal development.
