Would Stricter Gun Laws Prevent Shootings
More gun laws would have a negative effect on shootings and crime rates. Stricter gun laws would not prevent people from getting guns, would not prevent killings, and would not fare well with the people of the United States. Strict gun laws would only prevent law-abiding citizens from getting guns, and criminals would still be able to get them. Crime and shooting rates do not go down after increase in gun-restrictive laws are passed. People in the United States have the right to defend themselves from harm, and the 2nd Amendment right to own firearms.
Texas is a state with laid back gun laws, even recently approving open carry for handguns. Gun laws in Texas are getting less and less strict, the approval of open carry just shows how Texans care about gun rights, and how important it is to the society (Daniel Costa-Roberts).Getting a gun is generally easy to do in the United States. If someone wanted to shoot people, they could easily go to states like these and get a gun, and go wherever they want with it. Chicago gun laws; buying guns - need firearm owner ID card to buy rifles, shotguns, and handguns, open carry - none, concealed carry - allows concealed carry but needs to be approved for and own a license, no concealed carry in certain areas such as schools, assault weapons - banned, if owned before ban the owner must either modify to make non assault or give up to police (Kelly Bauer). Guns will always be available for
As of 2013 concealed gun carry is legal in all 50 states. Illinois was the last state to enact concealed gun carry. In some states people are required to have a permit, and in other states people are allowed “unrestricted carry” and do not need a permit to carry a concealed gun.
Guns are a major problem in our society and the numbers of these gun-related murders are continuing to rise. On top of the murders you also have people losing their lives through misfire and gun-related suicides. The total death toll of all gun-related deaths averages over 30,000 per year in the U.S. (http://blogs.kqed.org/lowdown/2013/03/07/u-s-gun-deaths-visualizing-the-numbers/). I believe that enforcing stricter gun laws will contribute to getting these numbers lower. The numbers do not lie, we as a society have a problem with gun-violence and we need to do something to fix it.
The majority of anti-gun advocates voice their opinion that more guns would produce more crimes unfortunately for them there is little to no truth in that claim. In reality, when gun ownership increased the amount of murders diminished as well. When states passed concealed weapons laws there was significant drops in the number of multiple victim shootings occurring, the number of deaths, and the number of injuries at these shootings. In 1997 both Wales and England banned handguns and the instantaneous effect was a 50% increase according to crime research. They never saw a day lower than after the year they decided to ban handguns. It has been proven by many surveys that the banning of guns increases crime rate which in turn proves that gun control is not the answer.
With having many different keywords and phrases in our society this can also show how each state takes the second amendment into their own hands. The states I found had the most interesting gun laws are New York, New Mexico, and Texas. These three states have very different gun laws. New York residents do not have to have a permit to purchase any rifles or shotguns but handguns do need a permit. The permit application has great depth when applying. “The applicant must have good moral character, at least 21 years of age, clean criminal record, and no history or evidence of mental illness or addiction to drugs and or alcohol. Although these are the laws in New York, the urban areas in New York are allowed to adopt their own policies and laws if their population exceeds 100,000 people (Laws 3).” New Mexico has very weak gun laws with very few regulations on concealed weapons. There is no permit required to purchase rifles, shotguns, handguns, or pistols. The residents of New Mexico are not required to have registration on rifles, shotguns, handguns, or pistols. The residents do not have to have a license. There are no permits required under the concealed carry law to carry a rifle or shotgun. On the other hand, concealed handguns or pistols must have a permit to carry. The resident must be
Anyone who believes strengthening the gun control laws would reduce gun violence is correct. However, if someone wants to kill someone, not having a gun is unfortunately not going to stop him or her. If a gun is not accessible, a person who wishes to kill someone will use another weapon that is accessible, such as a knife or bludgeon of sorts. Banning guns will lessen gun violence, but will bring up a rise in violence with other weapons.
The three year-anniversary of the Sandy Hook shooting just passed. The San Bernardino shootings occurred in November 2015. That was why many people are focused on what can be done to prevent things like this from occurring in the future. Many people believe that stricter gun control laws will prevent mass shootings. However, it is important to note that these ideas have been discussed for several decades.
The reason why our nation is allowed to bear a large quantity of firearms is due to the Second Amendment of our constitution, which specifically states, "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." (U.S. Const. am. 2) Because of how vague this amendment is when it comes to law interpretation, it is often used by gun advocates to argue for lenient gun laws. Even though the Second Amendment prevents the federal government from completely banning guns in America, there are still restrictions on the distribution and possession of firearms. Each of the states have their own specific gun laws but generally, a person must obtain a license or permit to purchase or possess a firearm. Also, another thing to note is that all states allow some form of concealed carry, which is carrying a concealed firearm in public. Despite the laws that allow the bearing and distribution of guns, society has multiple viewpoints concerning the usage and appropriateness of the freedom of having the "right to bear arms."
Bang! With current events such as Sandy Hook and what happened in Las Vegas guns are being misused.Hundreds of innocent people are being killed. We need to control how guns are used.We need more security to prevent guns being in public places and events. We also should control whose hands the guns fall in.So many people are mentally ill and convicted criminals should not have guns. How can we prevent thousands of unnecessary deaths?
Did you know that all handguns are semi-automatic? This means that all that stands between you and death is the pull of a trigger, but we can put an end to this. You hear in the news more than 50% people of the time getting hurt or even dying because of guns. There are many laws about gun control but some of the laws need to be taken in action. Gun Control laws should be stricter because still some guns are available to the public and children might pick them up, the wrong people still have a lot of access to them, and lastly if gun control laws become stricter the risk of innocent people getting hurt by guns is less.
Imagine somebody breaking into your home with the intentions of hurting you and your family and trying to take all your valuables that you own in your house, and not having anything to protect your loved ones. Without the protection of a firearm, the intruder could injure or kill all members within the household easily. In the United States, according to the Bill of Rights, a citizen has the right to bear arms, however, recently people have started to believe that guns only incite violence and therefore gun laws need to be more strict. Although, If you own the firearm for the right reasons and go through the process of having a carrying license, then that is within your rights to protect yourself and be able to own the gun. Therefore,
When examining the states with the least gun control, Louisiana was listed to be one of the worst states with the least gun laws. (Gun Laws, 2015) explains the current Gun Control Law that Louisiana enforces to its fellow citizens. Louisiana is also known to be called the “Gun Loving state” which allows firearms to be easily obtained by anyone. To obtain a firearm you immediately think that along with a firearm come a lot of procedures to get one. Well not for Louisiana, as long as you have a valid ID and are of the age 18 and 21 owning a gun is looking pretty promising. Under the state’s law you are only required to be 21 years of age to obtain a handgun and only 18 years old to own shotguns or rifles. Louisiana’s State law does not require anyone to have a gun permit, license or a registration. The only few restrictions that pertain to guns within the state is where you are
As of July, 2013, Illinois was the last state of the 50 states to legalize the concealed carry right. (Not including American Samoa, District of Columbia, N. Mariana Islands) Some states require gun permits to carry while others have what’s called unrestricted carry, so they do not require permits. In 42 of the states there are “shall issue” laws which means someone trying to get a gun permit simply needs to meet the following petty requirements like a minimum age, no prior felony conviction, and no recent commitments to a mental institution. The other eight states have a “may issue” law where concealed weapon permits are approved based on the discretion of local police departments or governments (ProCon.Org), which makes… a little more sense…
The gun laws are different in many cases. They are different in each city and state. The laws are different in many ways. Some feel we have the right to bear arms. Some feel we have the right to not bear arms. Just like some people feel we have the right to carry weapons. Some people feel we don’t
Currently in the United States, there is a large debate going on about what we should do about gun control. This issue played a large role in the recent election of our president Donald Trump. In this issue, there are two sides as well as a middle section that agrees slightly with both sides. On the extreme sides of the issue, some people believe that guns should be completely not allowed in the United States, while some believe there should be no regulation whatsoever due to the second amendment rights given to us by our forefathers. Then there are the people in the middle who believe there should be some regulation, such as background checks when you purchase
Every day billions of people walk among our earth with ease, whether they’re going to school, work, or just to browse the shopping center windows. Now imagine seeing strangers walking around with handguns visible to the naked eye while shopping, or walking to school or work. Lawmakers are putting forth the effort to pass a law allowing any person with a CHL(Concealed Handgun Licenses) to openly carry a handgun in plain view, not only are law makers pushing to pass open carry in public, but also on college campuses. In the February 2015 article in the Dallas Morning News written by Dean Weingarten he states, “Texas outright ban on carrying handguns in plain view is unusual. Only California, Florida, Illinois, New York, South Carolina, and Washington, D.C. have similar laws” (n.p). The state of Texas already allows people to carry concealed as long as the person is certified with a CHL. So why change the law? They shouldn’t! Law makers should leave the gun laws the way they are, for changing the law from concealed to open carry, and allowing open gun carry on college campuses will only be a distraction to the students attending that college, cause fear and anxiety, and will result in unnecessary shootings because of carelessness.
