School Dress Codes: Are They Ethical?

Dress code is administration telling us what we can and cannot wear. Some people believe we should wear uniform, because there's less judgment on what people wear and it's easier to choose what you're wearing in the morning before school. Some people also believe there should be no dress code so students can express their selves and be in the comfort of what they chose to wear. In 2016 at Cy-Fair high school we have a very strict dress code. Cy-Fairs dress code is very bias. I think we should have a dress code but students should not be able to wear super revealing clothing. Student should be able to wear what they want to express themselves and shouldn't be told what they can and cannot wear just because it "distracts" others.

Dress codes are not helping schools like they are meant to do; they are actually harming students in the school. Dress codes shame students and make them insecure about their bodies. They also disrupt precious class time that is vital to students. Buying clothes to fit the school dress code is costlier than some families can afford. Not only are dress codes stifling, but they are also unfair toward specific body types and different genders. Dress codes also decrease a student’s ability to be different from all of their peers in the way they dress. Schools should not have dress codes because they are sexist, unfair and disrupt class time.

Dress Codes in schools show many positive impacts. Kids who attend schools with dress codes show better behavior, reduces student violence, and boost self esteem (Daniels). Students are less focused on the brand shoes they are wearing or the risky shirt they put on that morning or focus more on what they attend school for, an education. Some of the rights of students and teachers are left behind when they walk into the school to maintain chaos.

Dress code is put into place to keep students from being bullied for how they dress and how some people may treat them different depending on what they wear. There is a lot of evidence that show students losing time in the class room because they are too worried about there personal apparel. David Brunsma, a sociologist who wrote Uniforms in Public Schools: A Decade of Research and Debate in 2005, says,

The anonymous author of Rules of Fashion says that the dress code is one thing that has served to lower crime, violence, and increase attendance and increase learning at a lot of schools. And a dress code itself and important statement because we want our young children, whether rich, poor, or middle class, when they're in school to define themselves primarily in terms of what's going on inside, not what they're wearing not he outside (Anonymous 2).

Is there anything more embarrassing than being dress coded at school? Enforcing a dress code among children is unfair because it not only discriminates against people but it destroys someone’s whole day. Dress codes and school uniforms are meant to increase student achievement and make everyone equal but instead it only hurts people. Most school dress codes are unnecessary and are sexist. Enforcing dress codes is suppose to boost student achievement but instead is racist, sexist and unnecessary. Schools should take into consideration their student 's feelings before they establish rules for dressing.

Have you ever been excluded from learning because of what you wore to school? In most schools, dress codes are set in place to provide a better learning space for all students. Having a dress code can oppress students because students are given the impression that they should not express themselves. Not all families can afford the clothes that abide by the rules. For example, some students don 't have the means to pay for new clothes, so they have to use hand-me-down clothing. Enforcing a dress code can lead to more problems in the long run because of the exceptions made for students who are athletes and cheerleaders. Many school faculty members including teachers and administrators think that keeping a dress code will keep students looking appropriate while learning, but this idea is wrong because it keeps students from expressing themselves and, the dress code singles out women.

Dress codes is a standard of clothing for school, office, club, or restaurant. Schools have dress codes to promote professionalism and a distraction-free learning environment. More standards of dressings are set in place for girls than males. This causes an unequal amount of bias towards women and sexism to occur in the dress code.

Let us begin with the obvious. Changing the dress code allows for kids to be comfortable wearing clothes. Many students will be able to move a lot better, not having to wear tight clothes. It also means that students can wear the clothes they have and not have to spend money on new clothes.

Dress codes has been apart of the educational system for many years. Administrators have struggled to find effective ways to deal with discipline problems. The creation of the dress codes has been a common solution for many educational system to help decrease the number of disciplinary issues that are dealt with on a daily basis. Things such as gang activity, bullying, increasing violence can all be traced to the way people in school’s dress. The dress code policy is considered to be a "fix all" solution in many public schools, but has failed to resolve the big issues. Dress codes should not be instituted to fix a particular problem, but should be looked at to help overall school reform. This why most private schools have a particular uniform that students must wear every single day. To try and resolve the issue. However, a school uniform policy does not carry enough weight that produces a safe learning environment or helps students achieve their goals at being successful. A student's role is to come into school everyday to learn, without having to worry about gang activities, being bullying or having someone start a fight with them because they are wearing a particular color.

Many people still believe a dress code is the answer to most school problems, but they’re wrong. I think that schools should stop enforcing dress codes. There are so many reasons and instances that prove that dress codes are completely unnecessary. One reason being that restricting student expression is against their first amendment rights. Another being that dress codes can be sexist. Also, contrary to popular belief, dress codes don’t prevent bullying.

School should be a learning environment, not a fashion show. Students shouldn’t obsess over the clothes they wear. Dress codes are beneficial to schools because they help to prevent inappropriate clothing choices, provide less distractions, and they eliminate social and class barriers.
