Dorothy employs flashbacks and comparison in order to express her opinions on understanding, trusting and judging a person. She uses flashback and comparison to show that context provides a varied angle about a person. She further argues that, when not properly understood, it can easily breed rivalry between people from varied social backgrounds. Throughout history, individuals have fought for more justifiable working conditions. Florence Kelley, a social worker and reformer, fought to gain more adequate working conditions for the children of the United States. At this time nearly twenty percent of American workers were under the age of sixteen. Kelley delivered a speech in Philadelphia on July 22, 1905, during the convention of the National American Woman Suffrage Association, that strived for more fair-minded hours, rather than the long, unhealthy, and tedious shifts thats children were put through overnight. This paper will be a unique interpretation coupled with an analysis of rhetoric in A Thousand Acre’s by Jane Smiley. This non-fiction novel is told in third person omniscient and is focused on the point of view of one of the main characters, Ginny Cook. A Thousand Acres was a modern-day retelling of Shakespeare’s King Lear; set on a large farm and small town in Iowa. This setting is important to the plot because it is more realistic compared to a far away mystical land that is detached from its audience. Smiley uses various rhetorical and literary techniques within her book to engage readers while still keeping to the basic storyline previously written by Shakespeare. “I am not here to represent Leonidas. His actions speak louder than my words ever could”, although Queen Gorgo believes this to be true, it is evident that her words still make quite the impact. The speech that was chosen for analysis was Queen Gorgo’s request of Sparta’s council to send their forces to the Battle of Thermopylae, from the movie 300. This speech was chosen simply for the fact that I have always enjoyed this movie and that I’ve always admired Queen Gorgo’s character. Although she does not immediately convince the council of sending Sparta’s army, her actions that follow do. Through the use of pathos, metaphors, and an urgent tone, Queen Gorgo is able to make a strong case to the council as to why they should aid King Leonidas at the Battle of Thermopylae.

Florence Kelley was a United States social worker and reformer who fought successfully for child labor laws and improved conditions for working women. Throughout her speech to the Philadelphia Convention of the National American Woman Suffrage Association, she stresses the importance of changing the working conditions that are in place for children. By using child labor as her baseline, Kelley is able to talk about her main point, which is her suggestion for women’s rights with the help of repetition, strong word choice, and opposition.
Patrick Henry’s use of his position as a politician to speak at the Virginia Convention is an excellent example of the rhetorical device, ethos. Patrick Henry was homeschooled by his father; however, for Henry this was not adequate. He failed at store keeping, then farming (Owens 80), but found his niche as a law student, in which he was self-educated Owens 80). After becoming a reputable, and controversial, figure in the courtrooms of Virginia, he used his position to speak in front of delegates of importance in the colonies, and explain to them why war with the British in inevitable. By using this position, he allows himself to use different, and more effective, rhetorical devices, such as pathos.

Rhetoric appeals is something that we use in our everyday life and sometimes without even knowing it. Sometimes it can be hard to tell which rhetoric appeals are being used by the speaker, but once you can identify them you cans see how the speaker is trying to persuade you based on what rhetorical appeal they are using. Many writers have use rhetorical appeals as a way to make make the audience feel what they feel, in an act to persuade them to once side. That can be seen a lot in persuasive writing.
