Power is something that everyone wants. In Like Water for Chocolate Tita is an important character. She has lots of problems that that she has to deal with. Tita is at the bottom when it comes to power. She wants to gain power to help solve her problems and make herself happier. Tita struggles the entire novel to free herself from other people's control. Throughout the the novel lots of people have control over Tita but the main three are Mama Elena, Pedro, and Rosaura. All of the power that Tita wants to gain and get out from under helps to display the theme of tradition that is shown in the novel by the usage of power.
The power that Tita has the most problems escaping is Mama Elena's. The reason she has so much trouble escaping her power is because of tradition. Tita is the youngest daughter so it is her job to take care of Mama Elena. Mama Elena knows the power that this gives her and abuses them by holding them over Titas head. Rosaura is Tita's sister and is not a great one. Rosaura marries Pedro even though she knows that Tita and him are in love. Tita feels powerless because of this and is trying to escape the entrapment. She wants to gain enough power to get Pedro all to herself and not have to see him with Rosaura. Tita finds her own way to feel power. Tita and Pedro are still together even though he is married and this gives Tita the feeling of power. Tradition helps show how much Tita loves him by showing everyone what she is willing to do to be with him. Tita understands tradition and always goes by it. It is shown by how she obeys Mama Elena even though it makes her go crazy. Tita is willing to break the tradition of a marriage to be with Pedro and that allows people to see how she feels.
