Poverty is a major issue that has worried America for years. America has worked extremely hard to end poverty,it still widely exists. There are some solutions to this world problem though such as food stamps, shelters, and obama care. It is important that while the challenges facing poverty are large, the solutions are feasible and can happen.

It has become common in the modern era of America to forget that many nations are poverty-stricken and lacking proper education around the world. In the United States, most children take a bus, are driven, or walk a short distance in mild weather to reach school. The buildings themselves are typically modern and clean, with an abundance of high quality coloring supplies, binders, and notebooks. Pakistani children get none of these luxuries, particularly girls. Occasionally, parents are able to send their children walking to a small school building with underdressed and underfed students where often no teacher is present, but even this poor form of education is a rarity. Report shows by 2010, 46.2 million Americans were officially in poverty, representing 15.1 percent of the population. Statistics show that the probability of being poor is greater for families headed by a female, racial and ethnic minorities, and for those under eighteen years of age (Lauder 2014). Poverty includes people of the working class and the homeless. Many people believe the position of the poor contradicts the American value of the right to life and the pursuit of happiness (Lauder 2014). Income equality is a major problem in the United States because as the richest nation in the world, we have some of the highest poverty levels in western society.

Today, there are millions of Americans in poverty. How come America is one of the wealthiest countries yet millions of people are impoverished? Poverty is considered one of the leading problems in America. In “Changing the Face of Poverty” written by Diana George, American nonprofit groups are showing poverty the wrong way in our country. Nonprofit organizations, for example, "Habitat for Humanity” shows how we perceive a weak nation, and terrible people look since they don't have a home. I believe America has a problem with helping the less fortunate, because the expenses and cost of owning a house are so high, many people’s general needs may have to be sacrificed. Imagine not having food to eat every day, fresh clothes to wear, a car, the list goes on and on. Our country is supposed to aid yet it seems like the U.S. just puts this issue to the side. The amount of poverty stricken areas in America ranks much higher than the amount of poverty in other nations. Most people living in poverty don’t live in the rough and tough living conditions that the media paints them too, but it is still hard for them to make ends meet. I think the amount of poverty in the United States need to be decreased.

The scourge of poverty in the United States of America is a tragic story that seems to never end. When President Lyndon B. Johnson fired the first shots in the “War on Poverty” in 1964, the rate declined by a several percentage points in the coming decade. Sadly, whereas in 1964 the percentage of Americans in poverty was approximately 17 percent of the population, the rate still stood at 14.8 percent a full 50 years later in 2014. The ongoing plague of poverty has given rise to a moral value shared almost universally in communities across America: in a society as prosperous and successful as ours, it cannot possibly be considered moral to bear witness to so many poor people who can see little or no way out of their lot in life. Within not only our own country, but throughout the entire world, there is poverty. It is pretty much a fact of life, and the current way the U.S. government is attempting to resolve the problem is not the correct way. We are trying to fix a long-term problem with a short-term solution. Instead of welfare, there are much better ways to solve the problem of poverty.

Peter Singer wrote an article that appeared in the New York Times that proposed that the formula for world poverty is, “Whatever money you are spending on luxuries, not necessities, should be given away.” This seems like an extremely drastic proposal for America’s society today, almost the whole country measures happiness on luxuries that cost money. However, when one thinks about how people live in many African countries this is not a big stretch. If we give luxury money away it would result in several pros for the our societies, we would become a less materialist world, we would become more benignant toward our neighbors, and most importantly fewer parts of the world would be struggling as much.

Rank also continues by saying that although the majority of Americans will experience poverty it is rarely for a long period of time, although it is typical for these people to fall back below the poverty line at some point. Race and gender also play a key part in poverty rates. Data from the Annual Social and Economic Supplement, form the Bureau of Labor Statistics, shows that it is most common for women and men of Hispanic descent to fall under the poverty line. Based on the Bureau’s data, coming in second is African American men and woman. These statistics make it evident that racial minorities suffer from increased poverty rates in the United States. In other words, children bore by minority parents are subject to disadvantage and higher poverty rates. More so, research illustrated in the Washington Post mentions details as to why it is different growing up black and in poverty opposed to white and in poverty. John Cox states that it is morel likely that a black family living in poverty is surrounded by other black families living in poverty, where that is not often the case with poor white families. This adds a second degree of poverty to these black families, called concentrated poverty. Concentrated poverty becomes a problem because the families that are not affected by these neighborhoods often times fail to contribute to the success and aid of them, keeping them concentrated.

Poverty in the world is a big problem. In the 1960s, food banks were located in 18 major cities, and one of them was Detroit. A man named Van Hengel started volunteering at a local soup kitchen when a lady with two kids told him that there should be place for homeless to go and get food almost like a bank.Van Hengel was the person who created food banks in America.Today there are more than 200 food banks in the U.S and 60,000 meal pantries. Each year the number of meal pantries and food banks increases.Food banks are still important today because there are many homeless and hungry children, and pets. The politics behind food banks in America is the governor of the state will decide if there is enough money in the budget to create food banks

Speaking of poverty, it is a big issue that needs to get solved. Did you know that 14.5% of all Americans lived below the poverty line in 2016? That’s more than 45 million people. Another fact about poverty would be that “Nonmetro blacks and African Americans had the highest incidence of poverty in 2016 (33.0 percent)”.

Image you are a divorced mom of three living in the United States today. How would you provide for your family financially while also taking care of them? How would you feel knowing your kids are less likely to graduate and get a high paying job because of their economic status?

In the United States, 45.3 million people live in poverty. In a country with a population of 313.9 million people, that means that almost 15% of the nation is living in poverty. Of those who are in poverty, 12,700 of those are veterans. As small and insignificant as that may seem, it is a problem that those who fought for the country are the ones who end up fighting to stay alive in that same country they just devoted their life to. A major factor that leads to poverty is joblessness. The unemployment rate is drastically different for veterans than it is for the average citizen. Within the past ten years, veteran employment rate skyrocketed to an astounding 11.7%, whereas the general public has an employment rate of 9.1%. Now, the question of “Well, why?” occurs. Veterans cannot find jobs in their home country anymore because of mental disabilities that they evolved during their time serving.

Overtime issues with the percentage of citizens in poverty has risen. Several organizations have been set up to help those who suffer from poverty and provide their everyday needs. There are always ways where a community can help eliminate the amount of people suffering poverty. Government has an influence on how much money flow there is in the United States such as the FED, which was created to help maintain a stable monetary and financial system and control the money supply. People themselves can also help from falling into poverty, but there are many other issues that cause poverty. Poverty is often caused by discrimination, being uneducated, and how wisely money is spent.

The United States has a homeless population of more than a half million people. The homeless assistance programs are overloaded, leaving nearly one third of that half million unsheltered, sleeping outside on the streets, or in makeshift tent cities. Reasons for homelessness include natural disasters, divorce, loss of employment, physical & mental disabilities, substance addiction, gambling addiction, and domestic violence. Those who are chronically homeless, meaning those who are either long-term homeless or have repeated bouts with homelessness, consist of about 15% of the homeless population (The State of Homelessness in America 2015, 2015). Once a person becomes homeless, the obstacles that can cause them to be caught in the trap of chronic homelessness include: the inability to obtain proper identification, desperation that leads to substance addiction & prostitution, and representative payees misuse of disability benefits. Effective ways to address the problem of chronic homelessness are to amend identification policies to allow homeless to obtain food and shelter, expand the amount of shelter beds for single women, and to hold representative payees of disability payments responsible for those under their care.
