Everyone knows what the word poverty means. It means poor, unable to buy the necessities to survive in today's world. We do not realize how easy it is for a person to fall into poverty: A lost job, a sudden illness, a death in the family or the endless cycle of being born into poverty and not knowing how to overcome it. There are so many children in poverty and a family's structure can effect the outcome. Most of the people who are at the poverty level need some type of help to overcome the obstacles. There are mane issues that deal with poverty and many things that can be done to stop it.

The issue of poverty in the United States seems to lie on the grounds of race education and family structure. As expected I found that educational levels paralleled poverty levels. Unexpected , research was found to prove that race did in fact play a substantial role in poverty. Family structure along with other influential factors either locked an individual into poverty or provided a means for escape from the continuing cycle. Other factors contributing to poverty was the location of homes or neighborhoods and the accessibility to better paying jobs.

Many reforms in the UnitedStates have been passed to help fight against the “War on Poverty”; but it has not been effective in eradicating poverty in the U.S. There are about 46 million people who are living in impoverished conditions and poverty continues to be a social issue in this country (Heritage Foundation, 2011) In the beginning, our country was formed under the belief that “this land is the land of opportunity and if we worked hard enough the American Dream can be gained” (Schwarz, 1997). People immigrate to this country today in hopes of becoming rich so they could gain a better life. The United States defines poverty for a family of four as being less than $16,036 per year, or $4,009 per person (Leone 12). People find themselves under this line for an innumerable amount of reasons. Some of these causes are under one's control and others are greater factors beyond an individual's power. Each family or individual person has unique and separate reasons for living in a state poverty. There is no way to try and define them all. Focusing in, three main topics arise that encompass the most predominant reasons for a person to fall into poverty. Poverty in the United States is a big concern that the nation face all together. Poverty is the main reasons why people are homeless, do not have enough food to eat, cannot get the medical help needed, and why there are so many crimes throughout the world. The main focus is poverty in the United States and how as a nation the citizens came together to help one another out. Poverty is defined as “the lack of necessities” (i.e., food, shelter, medical care, and safety), and the official poverty threshold is $24,250 (2015 guidelines) annually for families having two adults and two children (family of 4). This figure is computed at three times the income needed to eat according to a modest food plan. One thing not at issue, regardless of what measurements are used, is poverty is real, tangible, and affects millions of people worldwide. Today, too many people of all ages are living in poverty and many others are only one paycheck away from being there. More than one in eight Americans are considered poor. Poverty has had a huge effect on the outcome of the loss of homes and the lack of resources needed to be able to survive in today’s society. Many people who are in poverty are not able to make enough to support their families.

Poverty defined by the American Heritage Dictionary is “lack of the means of providing material needs or comforts” (Hirokazu Yoshikawa, 2012). Poverty in the United States is an issue that is often times overlooked because the focus of poverty is on developing and struggling countries. People often think America does not experience poverty because it is such a thriving country. The problem with this is that America is indeed struggling with poverty: “there are currently 488 counties in America where twenty percent of the population has lived below the poverty line for the past thirty years or more” (Clyburn, 2014, p. 1). Utilitarian ethics supports the idea to do the greatest good for the greatest number of people. In this case, the greatest good for the greatest number of people would be to stop poverty in the United States. The causes of poverty include: lack of jobs, lack of education, and overpopulation. The reasons are linked to government policies and the way the officials handle situations.

Poverty has been a headache that every country tries to get rid of. The war between every country and poverty has been going on for a long time. This war is not only happening in the third-world countries, but it is also a problem in the leading country such as the United States. Throughout the history, the United States of America has been constantly trying to wage war again poverty by trying to reform structure, improving living condition of the homeless, increase minimum wages. Even though, some reforms may have been able to decrease the percentage of poverty, they can never completely destroy poverty completely. There are varieties of ideas as to how the U.S can eliminate poverty, and one of these ideas is the reforming of the tax system. This idea has become a heated debate whether it can actually make the dream of every low-income family come true. However, reform the tax structure alone cannot completely eliminate the poverty in the U.S for several reasons.

Over the past couple years the cost of expenditures for child poverty has increased. It is now costing more to take care and provide for children in poverty than it is for governments to reduce and eliminate poverty as a whole. A large cause for child poverty is that children are born into families who have lower earnings which lead to those children growing up with a low potential to excel and therefore have job that pays low thus causing a recycled process. Living in poverty and low class segments in countries also takes a hit towards that country’s economy in the form of foregone earnings, crime and healthcare for those who grew up in poverty, one country that sees a large hit is the United States that faces a cost of $500 billion annually.

Bringing this statistics up is a good idea because what I want to show audience if I show this paper ends up somewhere else, the importance and the reality that is causing is real. There are people in the United States who are really stressing out right now because they can’t purchase items they need. Even worse putting food on the table. How can no one is doing anything to help these poor innocent people? What can we help to make a big difference? Lot of these citizens who are in poverty needs support and that the government puts in a little bit effort to help the people in need. The government don’t believe that most of the citizens actually need money, but they don’t know that. What if they actually need the money? This leads to many problems for the citizens because they will end up living in bad locations instead of good locations. Poverty is caused by many different things. The main cause of poverty in the U.S are stereotyping, separation of social activities lack of knowledge, employment skills and educations. The most known cause people spend their earnings on drugs and alcohol, which leads to poverty. How can we help? Well what I can do is create an organization, an organization to help people that are desperate for items like: Food supplies, Housings Mortgages, Money, etc.. Yet people spend all of their money on idiotic things such as tobacco, illegal drugs, or alcohol.Poverty is an illness that is destroying the United States and the people of poverty are there; they have made wrong choices such as buying illegal substances, abusing alcohol, gambling debts, and smoking tobacco.

Since 2000 poverty has been an issue in the United States. By 2015 there were 43.1 million people who live in poverty, which made the poverty rate to an estimated 13.5 percent (“Poverty Facts”). Poverty has been a problem for other countries for many years. A country that is considered the poorest and have a major problem defeating poverty is the Democratic Republic of the Congo (“List of 8 Poorest Countries in the World”). Poverty is a worldwide problem that severely affects children, however, with the help of people, poverty can be fixed, or decreased.

43.1 million people live in poverty in the United States of America(Read ‘WIC Nutrition Risk Criteria). They’re not only economically distressed but physically and emotionally too. All members of their family, including kids and parents, are affected by poverty. Some more severely than others. Poverty results in the lack of proper nutrition, disinterest in education, and increased likelihood of abuse in children.
