Post the economic crisis in America and the recession during the years of 2008 and 2009, the country saw a great increase in poverty and worsening of living conditions of Americans. Currently, almost 50 million of fellow Americans are living in extremely bad conditions under the poverty line which means earning less than $11490 for a single person or $23550 for a family of four people. That’s about 1 in every 6 people in this country are living under poverty. A person living in this country on minimum wage which is $7.25 an hour also cannot pull himself out of poverty even after working 40 hours a week.

The concepts of “worthy” and “unworthy” poor came about during the English Poor Laws that were introduced in the 1500’s. The English poor laws classified poor or dependent people into three major categories and established many requirement before aid was provided. Dependent persons were categorized as: vagrant (nomadic; with no permanent home or employment), the involuntary unemployed and the helpless. In effect, the poor laws separated the poor into two classes which were the worthy and the unworthy. The worthy were classified as orphans, widows, handicapped, or the frail elderly. Homelessness is an epidemic problem that faces many American’s and families across the United States, especially in Detroit. You may see homeless people sleeping in the underpasses of freeways or walking and sitting on street corners or holding up a sign asking for some support for their next meal. We all have seen homeless individuals and thought it was not our problem for their circumstances or maybe had a belief he/she was lying about their situation. Many of us make a choice to give money or buy food, but there are others who make a choice to ignore or overlook the homeless population. Society has placed a stigma and label the homeless population labeling them destitute by choice, but for many homelessness has become a way of life.

When people think about poverty and equality, people visualize individuals living in rough situations, while equality are rights given to the people. The article of “What is Poverty,” Jo Goodwin Parker provides personal experience on how poverty is affecting her life as well as her children. On the other hand, in the article “The Poverty of Equality,” Stephen Moore and Peter Ferrara are providing points of injustice in equality, like people cannot use their advantages to succeed, every person is fully and truly equal, and the devalue personal liberty. The world poverty has previously been defined by the World Bank as’’ existing on less than $1.25 per day''. ’Poverty is a condition many population and regions worldwide live in and it’s more common in low income countries more so in high income countries. However there is population groups that live within the high income countries, but still live in poor surrounding and in poverty. Therefore, it can’t be claimed that poverty is limited to only low income or developing countries.

Poverty for centuries has been a very severe issue that has troubled many nations while impeding economic developments and progress. Poverty stricken countries are majorly concentrated in the continents of Africa and Asia. Continents like the Americas and Europe have globally been recognized as been wealthier yet still many parts of these ostensible countries face massive cases of poverty. On their website, The World Bank calculated that the amount of people living in extreme poverty was likely to fall below ten percent in 2015. Even though the poverty rate has decreased, there are still many people living in extreme poverty. Poverty is the lack of the basic needs of life, including food, shelter, clothing and safe drinking water. For a person to live normally, it is important to meet a certain level of physical, social, and emotional needs. People who live in poverty have difficult time to achieve those as they are not welcomed in many places. Because of their low incomes, they have troubles in maintaining their health, hunger, education. Poverty has become a large issue around the world. It is something that many of us know about but we’re not realizing just how big of a problem it is. The world turned into a horrifying, cruel place, it is harsh and brutal to anyone who rebels against the authority/government. Poor people tend to behave in ways such that the conditions of poverty are reinforced. Numerous studies have studied the effects of poverty, and they show that the poor are more likely to commit crimes, use more alcohol and drugs, borrow more money, save less money, and smoke more (Liska & Chamlin, 1984; Lynch et al, 1997). Furthermore, prior research has established that scarcity of money or time can lead people to make poor decisions (Mani et al, 2013; Shah et al, 2013).

Despite the ups and downs of the country’s financial state, one thing that hasn’t changed is the identified vulnerable populations that for years have felt the long lasting impact of poverty. Prior to the Great Depression in the 1930’s the economically prosperous state of the country had long been blanketed those still struggling with being economically disadvantaged. Of course, those that chronically felt this impact were women, the disabled, people of color, the disabled, and those with low paying and unreliable jobs. James Patterson referred to this as “old poverty” (America’s struggle against poverty). However in 1929 when the stock market crashed and began the Great Depression “new poverty” began and those who previously had well paying jobs and owned real estate were now also experiencing life in poverty. Many have historically placed the blame of the Great Depression on President Hoover (1929-1937) and his employment policies in addition to his wage policies. In fact 18% of the 27% fall in GDP was directly associated with Hoover and his policies (What caused the depression Ohinian). It wasn’t until 1933 when President Roosevelt (1933-1945) came into Office that the state of the nation began to change.

In the United States and in countries all over the world, poverty can have an extreme impact on a country's population. Throughout my life, I have noticed these impacts take a toll on my local community, Payette, Idaho. I chose this topic because growing up in a small community you observe the best and worst of everyone, including those who may not have as much income as you. When you are younger it is not something which you are aware of, but as you grow up, you see the effects impact those in your community. As I grew up, I noticed the effects of poverty become more prevalent and those around me begin to face many individual challenges. My senior project is based on those in this community are suffering from poverty. Recent studies show Payette has poverty rate of 15.7% (Quickfacts 1), which is higher than the national poverty rate of 12.7% in 2016 (Semegae et al. 1). The project focused on assisting Payette School District students and expanded to the foster children in the surrounding area. Over this past summer, I collected approximately 90 backpacks, duffel bags, and suitcases to give to students and foster kids. The motivation behind project was because so many the school aged students start the year off without backpacks or with inadequate school supplies, while their other classmates may have a brand-new items. Poverty is something the world has been affected by for decades. It is a “disease” that our society has not been able to control. Even though multiple programs have been created to provide for those who are in need, the world can not seem to dig our way out of the poverty hole. According to Cliff Note’s, more than 35 million people are living in poverty; that is 14% of the whole population on earth (“Causes and Effects of Poverty”). However, what does this mean for the availability of health care to these people who are living in poverty? Americans who live in poverty have a lower chance of getting the healthcare they need versus those with higher incomes.

Chapter two of the essay will concentrate on the definition of poverty as perceived by different authors. These definitions throw light into the different perspectives of poverty and discuss various measurements in assessing poverty especially in developing countries.
