Readiness Evaluation for Implementing a Positive Behavioral Support System

Abstract
Using the results of the Scale of Effective School Discipline and Safety (SEDS) Questionnaire given to Lacy Elementary School participants, an analysis of the readiness of their teachers to implement a Positive Behavioral Support System (PBSS) will be examined. The SEDS questionnaire consists of 58 items, which are organized into five areas of attention by scale: Scale 1: Teachers’ Effective Classroom Management Skills (24 items), Scale 2: Teachers’ Positive Behavioral Interactions and Respect (11 items), Scale 3: Holding Students Accountable for Their Behavior: Administration and Staff (7 items), Scale 4: Teachers’ Contribution to a Positive School Climate (9 items), and Scale 5: School Safety and

The data was placed in a Summary Table (see Table 1) in order to provide a visualization of the findings, as well as a brief examination of each scale individually. It is important to know that the data collection, preparation, implementation, maintaining and sustaining a PBSS is a process that should be done over the course of a few years. Identifying “generic goals, objectives, evidence-based components, evidence and outcomes…” (Knoff, p. 35) is the initial process, but then presenting the plan to move forward with a PBSS would need to be introduced to faculty and staff, in hopes to achieve large support (generally an 80% buy-in of all practitioners of the model) to move forward. Once this is achieved, a team is formed to start PBSS-related data collection that should take place over the course of at least three years (Knoff, p. 35), and is then carefully examined by the team to reach the next steps of the implementing a complete, built-for-success

The implementation of positive behavior management systems in schools play a vital role in creating and maintaining a safe and supportive school environment. According to (safeschoolshub) “A safe school is one that takes action to promote and recognize positive student behavior, ensure student safety and minimize risk.”

Today schools are faced with an overwhelming amount of behavior problems as a result they have incorporated programs to help create a positive culture within each school system.
