From my social care placement, I have chosen to assist a service user to partake in a recreational activity for completion of my HNC Social Care Graded Unit project. The project focuses on developing their specific talents and social skills through participation in a varying selection of recreational activities. To consider David’s support requirement within my placement setting, I have used the P.I.E.S. method. This means assessing his: Physical, Intellectual, Emotional, and Social need (Oxford Cambridge and RSA, n.d.). David’s toiletry needs are minimal; he needs guided to the toilet but is capable to use the facilities by himself. Minor support is needed during meals. Sometimes he will request that larger pieces of food are cut up smaller, so he can gather food more easily with cutlery. David also prefers to use a plate guard to stop food sliding off his plate. He can find the last pieces of food if his sight guide tells him the clock-hand position which is related to the food’s location on his plate, which I found to be particularly impressive – and potentially relevant to the successful completion of my planned activity. His main support need is in the form of a long, white, hand-held cane, which is used to detect objects in his path. He also needs a full-time sight guide; a role usually fulfilled by either his immediate family members, or support workers. Helping David to maintain his independence in simple tasks would be a relevant achievement. Although he is capable, he is often found to be short of self-motivation and will happily allow people to run around after him.
