Personal Leadership Philosophy

When leading troops it is essential for the leader to understand his or her command environment and how they fit in to that environment. For me, becoming an effective leader begins with this: How do I fit in to my organization and what can I offer my organization and the Soldiers that look to me for guidance. To become an effective leader I have had to address this issue first and foremost. My philosophy is simple, know the needs of the organization, know my personal strengths and weaknesses, and know my Soldiers. This is the philosophy that I try to pass to my subordinates. By knowing these three simple statements I have found that I can become a more effective team member as well as leader to both enlisted and officers alike who look to me for guidance.

A good leader leads from the middle and not the front. Leadership is working with people in order to complete a task, instead of telling others what to do. Delegating and helping others realize their potential and work to their strengths is what leadership is all about. Leadership is the ability to listen to others and show them the right path. I strive to be a leader in all I do. As a pharmacist, I will be the leader in the community and be able to help patients with their medical needs. While I have had times in my academic classes that I am able to step up and be the leader, I often use my leadership skills most in extracurricular activities. I have served as President of my cooperative house, where I learned so much from the constant leadership.

My father once told me that, “everything we do— be it in academia, at work, social or family life—we are guided by principles, beliefs and values that collectively form our ideology of life.” I believe that every leader, to a certain extent, is shaped through her individual personal experience. Although in some cases, we may not realize to what extent our personal assumptions and beliefs shape our ability to lead or be led.

Leaders are very important and and every action they make possibly affect even one person to be more inspired and help them after watching a leader speak. I remember from experience, this one time everyone had to read their speech they wrote in front of the whole class and this was my first time doing it. I was worried that I wouldn't be good enough at talking in front of everyone, but then one of my fellow students went first and showed me I wouldn't have to be worried. That person inspired me and was a good example of a leader.

To me, leadership is taking responsibilities, inspiring others decision and creating a vision for the future. I think leaders are those who use their skills in leadership to make a difference in others. All great leaders had something unique about them and yet they were bound by the greatness that helped them to lead the masses to innovation. To be a leader means you always be on point to influence others and also willing to adapt accordingly if things are changing in another direction. As a role model, it is very important to listen and react to problematic concerns in a timely manner. When holding a leadership role, you have to admit to fault and fix issues. I believe some people are born with leadership tendencies, while others are thrust into positions and develop leadership abilities over time. I have been fortunate to be in environments where individuals in leadership capacities have exhibited both contemptible and admirable leadership traits. By fortunate, I mean I have gained wisdom from all of those experiences which have aided in the development of my leadership skills. Characteristics such as abusing power and making decisions which are egoistic and unethical are not traits I aspire to possess.

My definition of leadership is leading by example. Setting the pace and guiding from the front. Keeping your hand on the pulse of your people with open lines of communication and clear expectations. Ensuring all needs are met from the office paperwork, work space, and the family dynamic. Wherein you create an environment for success as your people are trained, equipped, and motivated to perform at their very best. Leadership influences during my career are good as BMCM Steve Hearn embodied all that is required of a leader. Steve was authentic and personable. He allowed people to get close and yet pushed them to be their best as he would speak to your strengths and weakness. His skills were unmatched yet he gave me a sense of purpose, buy in and belonging. Steve applied patience to help me get the basics of a specialty area that has made me very successful.

Leadership is a privilege that carries the responsibilities to inspire, mold, and teach others as well as to attain the vision and the goals of our organization. Real Leaders are strong in their belief, and they belief in what they are doing. Faith and belief comes from the inside.

I believe that leadership is not a state of being in charge, but rather your title as a leader comes from those believing and trusting in you. Just because you are in charge, doesn’t mean you are leading. A leader is continually inspiring and wanting those in their surroundings to excel even if that means they will surpass them on day. They must be providing a safe environment that makes those around them want to do better. People need to feel that they are being taken care of and that those above them have their best interest at heart.

To me, leadership is not about being in charge of someone. It is knowing the group of people you are going to work with and being able to understand how it works best. Leaders need to understand who they are as people and what you need to do in order to be successful: how people learn, what they accept, and how well they can work with others.

Leadership to me is someone who leads by example, one who steps up in times of crisis and is able to think and act creatively in difficult situations. In light of recent events I believe the definition of leadership has changed. A leader may have a high profile or a low profile. There are over 100 different definitions of leadership that have been identified. Leadership is considered a trait, skill, ability, behavior, relationship and a process. Trait theories help us identify traits and qualities that are helpful when leading others. Leaders need the required traits that a particular situation demands. The Oxford American dictionary defines leadership as the act of leading a group of people. To me, that’s a bit understated. In my opinion, leadership, and the act of being a leader, is much more than that. Leadership is having the responsibility to stand in front of a group of people and be able to inspire and influence them to work toward a common goal. Leadership is having the trust of the people you are representing to help the team make positive changes and positive steps forward towards that goal. Leadership is an act of selflessness to do what’s right for the group as a whole, and not just yourself. A leader is ethical, assertive, progressive, and inclusive. Leadership is all around us regardless of position. Everyone, in some manner, has the opportunity to lead and make an impact whether at home or at work, low on the rank structure or at the top of the proverbial food chain. A successful leader is someone who has a vision, strong core values, a servant and someone who can win the hearts of those to whom they are leading to accomplish a mission; leaders work themselves out of a job if successful. Influences within my career were Chiefs on my boat who were not afraid to get their hands dirty, first classes who worked late and made themselves available when we were all screwing up to ensure we would succeed without retribution on the following Monday and dozens more with attributes I wanted to follow and visions I thought were worth wild to achieve. Through these exposures, I have realized that a successful leader is a servant. My leadership philosophy is to provide a vision, be an example, and empower people to succeed, be a servant to those doing the work, reward success and get out of the way.
