Personal Identity Essay

The concept of Identity is complex through the exploration of relationships and a sense of belonging. This is explored within Tim Winton’s short stories, ‘ Neighbours’ and ‘Big World’, and in Robert Walker’s poem ‘Okay, Let’s be Honest’. Identity can change and evolve depending on belief, change, language and shifting influences.

My identity has been formed over the course of my life, especially throughout my pre-teen years, in 2012, when my parents decided to split, and my mother went off to live with in Bristol. I have become a completely different person from when I was ten years old, because of the people in my life, such as my teachers, my parents, and my friends. I feel as though I have become a more well-rounded person, because of my experiences.

I can conclude that even though I have some of my life planned out that things will change. Like I said earlier I am only in highschool , I don’t have to know who i am yet or what I am going to be. These are just questions I don’t have the answers to yet and I might not get them for a long time . Identity is what defines us as a person. Everyone one on earth has their own unique identity. To showcase my identity, I created a collage of images and descriptive words, called an identi-kit. This identi-kit shows what I feel like is my identity to myself and the others. My identi-kit identifies me as a mixed martial artist. The identi-kit has images of a deadly shark with mixed martial arts gloves on that say mixed martial arts on the front and fight shorts with the words competitor and warrior on them. Through analysing Locke’s account of personal identity and his definition of a ‘person’, the first side of this argument will be explained. One aspect of my identity which has shaped my life tremendously, is being the only natural born citizen born into a family composed entirely of immigrants. My family, including my grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and further extended relatives all immigrated to America from Albania. For some of my family, like my grandparents, they immigrated here when they were already very old, for others like my sister, this happened when they were only two years old. My parents immigrated to America with my sisters when they were middle ages, and I was born here soon after. Out of all of the large family that I have, I am the only one of all of us, who was born in America. This is an aspect of myself which has made me grow and shape into the person I am. It has affected my identity and life in many ways that I have come to realize and many that I’m sure I have yet to understand.

I classify my race, ethnicity, and culture as a white, Irish-Italian- American, woman. My mother was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland and my paternal grandparents are from Sicily, Italy. I imagine being first generation Irish and second generation Italian makes me relate more with my ethnicity.

Every individual has a story of their own, and in a sense there is a resemblance to novels with all its ups and downs, and truths and fictions. Even more, there is this notion of “do not judge a book by its cover;” each page within a person’s life weighs more on one’s identity than the outer surface one perceives does. Despite this, how much of each page is determined by the individual and how much is determined by outside forces? In “Selections from Reading Lolita in Tehran: A Memoir in Books,” Azar Nafisi describes the necessity of identity in a world where fiction and reality are intertwined. While Oliver Sacks in the excerpt, “The Mind’s Eye,” points out the physiological changes in an individual’s mind when facing a challenge more or less changes the identity of a person. Continuing on the development of identity, Jean Twenge in her text, “An Army of One: Me,” highlights how social standards can shape and limit an individual as what embodies “the Self” becomes more defined. All three authors tackle the scope of identity, since the individual, “the Self,” and the “mind’s eye” are the center of discussion. The matter of identity can be shaped by circumstances and experiences when the individual’s environment is volatile, and has changed dramatically, or the individual’s surrounding society is prevalent in the actions of its subjects. However, identity is something that is already predetermined to each individual, and the factors listed above reveal the true identity of each individual more rather than shape it.

Who are you? Who am I? These philosophical questions often get brought up and debated over by most philosophers from the past and today. Teens go through this process of who am I and what is my purpose in life? To find these purposes we affiliate ourselves with different groups such as our friend groups, extracurricular activities and peer academics. I would identity myself as being a female. I’m a part of international club and I’m a cashier at the café. We identify ourselves with the groups we choose to be a part of. Being a part of these groups help us feel like we belong and that we have some sort of place in this big world. Since most people go through this identity issue, researches have researched how we identify ourselves socially. They came up with a theory called social identity theory.

Although people generate a separate profile for each individual they meet, sometimes the profiles are very different. In high school we befriend many persons of different races, personalities, as well as social groups, yet we tend to befriend very similar individuals. Very rarely do we realize that some people are actually more different than we know. Freshman year, I entered into a world all different than what I was used to, but yet I made two amazing friends. Jessica was different than the friends I had in middle school, but I was happy to make friends different than what I was used to. Amber on the other hand, was all too similar to the friends I had back in middle school. I was happy nonetheless to have some familiarity in a big new world called High school. Between them are many differences, but a few stand out from the others. College and work ethic, their personalities, and talents differ greatly.

There are numerous factors that either make up or restrain the self-identity of a person or an individual. Culture, in addition to family traditions, is one of the factors that affect the self-identity of an individual. When growing up, the environment around affect the personality, values, as well as, beliefs of an individual. The environment includes friends, family members, and the people that affect the life of an individual. So, if the environment is negative, then an individual will have low self esteem.

Over the course of my life I have had many life experiences which have made me who I am today. When I was in my middle childhood, most of my life revolved around playing and having fun. I did not have to put forth effort in hardly any area of my life or work hard in order to achieve specific goals. As time went on however, my own life experiences began to have an effect on me, and shape the person I am today. My life started to change the most during middle childhood when I was around the age of seven years old. At this point in my life, I had to adjust to several big changes.
