Families can be like anchors during tough times. They keep you grounded and make sure that you keep it together when rough waters hit. No matter the challenge they will support you and make sure you are on top of your game. Even at your lowest point, they will pick you up. That’s what family is there for. A perfect example of this can be found in Markus Zusak’s The Book Thief and Peg Kehret’s Abduction. The Book Thief is about girl named Liesel who is adopted by a foster family in Germany, (while Hitler is the ruler) who must grow up with challenges such as learning to read, figuring out why her mother gave her up, and hiding a Jew. Abduction is a novel about a girl named Bonnie whose brother is kidnapped by his father and she must try her hardest to stay strong while trying to save her brother’s life. Markus Zusak’s The Book Thief, and Peg Kehret’s Abduction, while having numerous differences, are very similar in craft moves and theme. Both of my text share the idea that the world can be a cruel place and you need to rely on your family to get you through tough times. For example, in The Book Thief, Liesel hears, and experiences all the horrendous things that Hitler had done to the Jews, Communist, etc. “Possibly the only good to …show more content…
The author of, The Book Thief , does not blatantly state the theme. Contrariwise, to how the author utilizes the theme in Abduction. Although, there is a difference in how both texts express their theme, it is easy to see that they both want the reader to understand the point they are trying to get across. It is easy to see that Abduction and The Book Thief incorporate different craft moves all throughout the story’s. The Book Thief uses craft moves such as symbolism, similes, and allusions all throughout the story. They are used to create a mood and tone for the text. “… it was raining on Himmel Street when the world ended for Liesel
The first major use of symbolism The Book Thief conveys is the use of the gravedigger's handbook to help the reader remember characters and to help the reader more easily
1) Prescribed Text – The Book Thief a. Compose a summary/synopsis of the text (plot/themes/characters/key concerns). (100 words only)
Family, a foundation to build an empire of a story from yet the easiest to tear down from guilt or the portrayal of guilt. The story depicts two very different siblings, one brother Manchester who is rich, successful, brawny, and has a knack for snacks. Widely different from Manchester is Skidmore due to the fact he is a sad, and creepy individual. Also he does not have a knack for snacks or sweets. Two divergent individuals, yet one unable to function without the help of the other. Now the story would not be complete without one brother becoming completely jealous and despising the other. Commonly this leads to several things such as arguing, fighting, or to better put it, leads to betrayal. Betrayal, a common theme among siblings, say one
Through all of the irony and vivid coloring, The Book Thief is more easily understood after acquiring knowledge of reading literature with greater care and meticulousness. Applying chapters of How to Read Literature like a Professor can better enhance a reader’s awareness of hidden messages and symbols within certain works of literature. In Chapter Two, Foster explains how meals suggest a communion between all parties involved in it. Markus Zusak also uses meals and food to bring families together in The Book Thief. Foster also explains, in Chapter Eleven, how violence in literature usually stands for more than just violence.
Both The Book Thief and Night revolve around the idea of the Holocaust. With this, the reader is able to see the contrast between two different people at the time. Night by Elie Wiesel provides the perspective from the inside of concentration camps, while The Book Thief by Markus Zusak provides the perspective from those living in Nazi Germany. By reading both perspectives, the reader is given the thoughts and feelings of both people connecting all people of the time period, coming to the conclusion that all people were suffering loss of faith in God and
Another strong theme from the book is the importance of family bonds, especially if that’s
In the text, the extrinsic factor that most influences the author is family, while the extrinsic factor that most influences Wes are expectations. The author has a strong holding family that helps him with
The love between the protagonists in the times of hardship is the most profound relationship in the book and the strength of it raises the standard of the novel. The relation of the father and the son is very strong and symbolizes protection to the child. They take the initiative to struggle and live in an apocalyptic place which has been completely destroyed. The father is like the soul of his son and the very last hope for the son to survive .The son finds support in his son when he goes through the stages of loneliness and despair. It is a natural way for people to rely on others for support and by survival instincts; it is deeper when there is such a close relationship between a father and a son. McCarthy in terms of characterization makes the buy very innocent as he does not know how to differentiate between the “good guys” and “bad guys”. He wants to help everyone and on the other hand the father is very strong and is wise. He lives each and every day as a normal day so that he can keep his son strong as well. The father is very intelligent as he responds to his son questions thoughtfully to keep his son’s hope up. The father is very optimistic even when they are facing a hard time moving forward. To quote, “The lay listening, Can you do it? When the time comes? When the time comes there will be no time. Now is the time. Curse God and die. What if it doesn’t fire? It has to fire. What if it doesn’t fire? Could you crush that beloved
Is family important to you? Are they with you through your life? Do they make you laugh and happy? Well the place in the book is a mess. The government is corrupted and the people were not fair. The rich were separated to a different part of the city away from the poor. Families were lost and abused like Day’s. In the Legend series, Marie Lu illustrates the theme that family is important to happiness through Day’s actions, Day’s symbolism and Day’s dialogue.
Firstly how does the novel show the theme of family in the novel. An example from the novel is when Ada wants to move to the city to find a job in the city. But she can’t because she has to stay at home and look after her family because her mum has died and her dad is always drunk, so if she leaves things might go badly. Also, family is shown in the novel when Willand Murray don’t talk much anymore because after what happened
The first basic theme of family I found in this novel was family can cause people to do things they never would have considered before. (Emmett went to space on a trip out of our own solar system for the chance to help his Mom survive) Some evidence to support this claim would be found on page 18. This is where Emmet goes on a journey out of the solar system to try and get money for his mother who has cancer. My thinking on this is that Emmett's family is poor, and bable can control him through his desire to win and get his mother medical care. This leads me to think about a possible theme that would be connected to the larger idea of family, control and using one’s family to control them. Emmett's family seems very supportive of him even though he has had a rocky past and the family has fallen upon hard times and his father leaves him with the message, bend the rules, break them if you must, Just be true to who you are. That
“The Book Thief” presented a story filled with various themes that comprised a powerful plot line. Although there were many themes in the story, there was one that stood out to me more than others. In the process of reading the book, the theme of suffering affected me the most. The definition of the word suffer is to experience or be subjected to something bad or unpleasant. Different characters within the story are subjected to dreadful feelings and are therefore suffering. Through my analyzation, I observed the three different types of suffering that the characters experienced: guilt, feelings of emptiness, and anxiety. The characters of “The Book Thief” experience these three types of suffering in different ways.
Both movies revolve around the lives of two young girls living in Germany during World War II. In The Book Thief, we are introduced to the main character, known as Liesel. Liesel was riding on a train with her mother and younger
Words are more influential than thought. Words can have such a powerful impact on how you interpret things, how you feel, and how you can make others feel as well. The word choice used in The Book Thief demonstrates many themes throughout such as death, friendship, guilt, reason, and the struggle between ones inner self and the society in which he is surrounded. As complex as this may sound, the method was used in a simplistic fashion to construct the meaning and details of certain situations through the senses that ultimately capture how the characters take in the world around them. The power of words in the novel The Book Thief is used to control individuals and gain power if rooted from bad intentions; however, the power of words also
In the novel The Book Thief written by Marcus Zusak, Max found himself in a situation where the propaganda that Hitler has set affected his life in many ways. With the help of Liesel’s words and reading and the care that the Hubermanns gave, Max grew stronger and he had the courage to stand up and protect himself from the force that Hitler had set against the him and the Jews. By having the his power of will, Max was fighting Hitler in his own circumstances even if it 's just in his imagination.
