Artificial Intelligence is the taking over of machines to do tasks that would normally require a human to do. The idea of artificial intelligence has been around for years, appearing in movies and television shows to show what the future might bring. Artificial intelligence is becoming closer to a reality and now society must question if it should have a role in society. Artificial intelligence has many flaws at the moment making it impractical for use until society can address the issues facing it like the loss of jobs and how to control the use of AI.

Many other jobs are also being replaced by robots such as cashiers, phone operators, salespeople, drivers, bank tellers, and even surgeons (Alkins). When you go to the grocery store and go to a self check-out station, you are being checked out by a robot. If you call the number on the back of a credit card, chances are you’ll speak to an automated artificially-intelligent machine. Self-driving cars are being introduced into society as taxi, bus and truck drivers. While the use of automated artificially intelligent machines is beneficial to companies by lessening the amount of money they put out to employee pay checks, in the long run it will be detrimental to our economy as a whole. Robots will and are taking away jobs from people around the world, which will take away a source of income to many families, potentially putting them into poverty, lessening the amount of people who would be able to use the robotic

Senior statistician, Eric R. Teoh, and doctor of philosophy, David G. Kidd, at the Insurance Institute for Safety wrote an article entitled “Rage Against the Machine? Google’s Self-Driving Car Versus Human Drivers.” Teoh and Kidd write, “There were no single-vehicle crashes during autonomous mode, and the Google car was partially-at-fault in only one incident” (60). When comparing these findings to the average driver, these results are very promising. Teoh and Kidd write, “Results suggest that highly-automated vehicles preform more safely than human drivers in certain conditions, but will continue to be involved in crashes with conventionally-driven vehicles” (57). This further enforces the statement that self-driving cars can reduce accident numbers; however, only if autonomous cars are implemented on a massive scale. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), an organization committed to reducing injuries on the road, released an article entitled “Automated Vehicles for Safety.” The NHTSA writes, “Automated vehicles’ potential to save lives and reduce injuries is rooted in one critical and tragic fact: 94 percent of serious crashes are due to human error” (“Automated Vehicles”) Because of human error, a pattern of machines providing more accuracy as emerged. However, there are many obvious ethical issues involved when dealing with artificial intelligence. First and most apparent, is that if we allow artificial research to continue, many workers, especially labor workers, will lose their jobs due directly to the development of artificial intelligence. This is absolutely unfair for these workers. What are they going to do? How will they support their families? Many will become homeless or turn to crime. The balance between the poor and the rich will be tipped. There will be few who will enjoy this development, namely the business owners, who have control of the AI and are independent of the lower class labor force. The rest will be in destitute. As we know, if only a small portion of society does “productive” work, the economy will be in chaos. Siri, Alexa, video games, smart cars, online customer support, security surveillance, Spotify, Pandora, Netflix. All of these applications are similar in one way: they’re all artificial intelligence. And whose to say it might take over the world one day. Our generation today has essentially grown up around the use of technology. By a young age, most children are able to work through a phone or computer/tablet to get the solution they need. This type of technology is right at our fingertips each and every day, allowing people to find and answer in a short amount of time. It is efficient, but is that always a good thing? Machines these days are taking over and they are everywhere you look. Many are being used very wisely, but some are being used in a feeble minded way. Many argue that by using artificial intelligence it will hurt our lives tremendously. However, the use of this global machinery clearly shows that it will give us a more prosperous and healthy lifestyle.

Many wonder if Artificial Intelligence (AI) could be beneficial to humanity. AI has been around for only a few years. Voice Assistants such as Bixby and Siri help people maneuver through screen selection, apps and much more on their cell phones easier and faster. AI is slowly getting better, with things such as self-driving cars and robotic relations. There are two types of AI, weak AI and strong AI. Weak AI are things we have today, such as those listed above (Siri and Bixby), and the strong AI is what researchers are currently working towards. There are many ways that AI could be useful in our lives, it can help us to move forward in technology that we have yet to make many advances in, it can also make everyday complications and annoyances much easier for humans.

Throughout the course of history, technological advances have proven to not only influence, but significantly impact one’s quality of life. Within society, there are those who strongly believe that these advancements have saved lives and benefitted future generations, while others argue against it, firmly articulating that the progression of technology will prove to work against the overall betterment of humanity. Despite this, one cannot deny society’s obsession and thirst for the next ‘big’ technological advancement. Human’s, never content with what they have, are extremely vulnerable and susceptible to consumeristic tendencies. Regardless of what is actually attainable, we always focus on the technology of the future. Perhaps the definition of futuristic advancement can be best understood as Artificial Intelligence? Surprisingly the days of Artificial Intelligence are approaching; however, with this revelation come challenging questions. What can be gained through Artificial Intelligence -- how will humanity be impacted by this technology? Are there potential dangers associated with it? Will Artificial Intelligence be a universal advancement? Only through further exploration and analysis of these questions will one be able to fully grasp the notion of Artificial Intelligence

Although there are many threats and worries with Artificial Intelligence there are also many benefits that can outweigh the negatives. Our society is already experiencing this technology in vehicles that have auto sensing and braking capabilities.

The idea of Artificial Intelligence is a widely discussed topic, mostly filled with propaganda, in an Information Technology ruled society like ours today. As said by Christof Koch, president and chief scientific officer of the Allen institute for Brain Science in Seattle: “Within a decade these instances of ‘weak’ or ‘narrow’ AI—able to replicate specific human tasks—will permeate society. Siri is only the beginning. Driverless cars and trucks will become the norm, and our interactions in supermarkets, hospitals, industry, offices and financial markets will be dominated by narrow AI.” [1] (Christof) But with increases in technologies like facial recognition, algorithms that can teach themselves and chips that can be embedded to let normal vehicles drive autonomously, have we allowed computer to even be smarter than that of its creators? Given that technology does continue to effortlessly increase in aptitude and prominence, it will one day become more troublesome than helpful. If we were to one day create humanoids that are able to think for themselves or cars that were able to completely drive themselves, without the input of a human, this brings about an entire moral problem in and of itself. As we continue to create intelligent and eventually sentient technology that no longer relies on our human presence, the effect it could have on our culture as we know it could become catastrophic.

Secondly, there are some disadvantages of artificial intelligences. The first disadvantage is that by artificial intelligence being an electrical based technology makes it very vulnerable to phenomena such as flooding, power grid failures, earthquakes, communication failures, and solar storms to name a few. These make becoming dependent on artificial intelligence very bad because, if they were to fail an insane amount of things can go wrong. For instance, imagine if a solar storm like the Carrington Event in 1859 were to happen again it would disrupt everything the AI managed causing many failures and damage far beyond the actual damage of the event. It is believed that progress in AI will lead to robots that can do nearly everything that humans can do in a more efficient way. There will be time when these machines will outperform humans if not controlled.
