Over the past few weeks I have observed a child in the twelve to eighteen month old category. Throughout this paper I will refer to him as Z. I had five different observations, each for one hour at the West Chester Area Day Care. I sat in classroom seven, in a little chair in the corner writing down everything I observed about him. It was interesting to learn about Z as I watched him interact with the adults and other kids that were in the room with him. Z caught my attention right away in the classroom. He was very active, walking around while the other children were mainly sitting or only crawling. This lead me to choose him to observe for this project, and focus on his physical movement and interactions with others throughout this paper. Z was always moving around, the only time he was ever sitting still was when he was placed in a height chair for snack time. He switched between crawling and walking. Most of the time he would walk, but then he would fall down and continue to wherever his destination was by crawling. I noticed one day he was holding a maraca and walked for a longer period of time than usual. According to (page 183 infants children and adolescents), it is easier for them to focus on their balance when they are holding onto an object. He demonstrated the ability t squat down and picking something up, before returning to a standing position. The adults encouraged his walking behaviors, so when the group came in from the outside playground, they would let him walk in, while most of the other kids were being pushed in the giant stroller. The average age for most kids to begin walking is 11 months and 3 weeks, the range being 9 to 17 months, so he his definitely on track for his age group (182). He was also able to climb up onto things. For example, when the children were brought on walks around the neighborhood there was a giant stroller that they rode in as mentioned earlier. Z got up the step and turned himself around to sit down in the seat. He did the same thing on some of the steps on the playground, crawling up one and turning himself around to sit. Walking up stairs with help is achieved on average at 16 months, so he appears to be on the right track towards that motor skill. A baby’s
For our child observation project, we interacted with a seven year old boy named Nolan.
Describe the locations where you conducted observations and how much time was spent observing at each site: who was there, what were they doing, when and where did you observe, how was it being conducted. Briefly describe the people and setting at each site.
For my Child observation, I did a little girl named Bryntlie. Bryntlie has an older sister, along with a mom and dad. Bryantlie doesn’t have a cat or a dog, but she loves her cows. She said she has a hundred black ones. When I asked her what her favorite food was, she didn’t even hesitate, she smiled and said, “cheese pizza”, and she eats it every night. Bryntlie likes to play Barbie’s with her sister and her favorite color is light blue like the sky. She explained to me that she has a huge 6-foot doll house and she has a smaller one too. She went into detail about her doll house, it has 3 rooms, a bathroom, kitchen and a huge porch. Bryntlie loves to read, her favorite book is Brown Bear Brown Bear. She said her mother reads her the story every night before she goes to bed. Her favorite character in the story is the fish, because she likes to swim. Her favorite song is Twinkle-Twinkle Little Star, she said she likes the song because she likes watching the stars at night. Bryntlie was telling me a story about how her sister and herself went to help dad feed the cows. Big sister got in the fence with the cows to go pet the baby calf and got chased by the momma cow. But she went on to explain to me that it wasn’t the momma cows fault because she was trying to protect her baby. Bryntlie likes to drawl. If you set a piece of paper down in front of her, she will write her name really big on the right-hand side and then begins to draw. She mostly drawls flowers, hearts and
When I worked as a Paralegal, after retiring, the court appointed us to a woman that had an infant and was pregnant with another. The neighbors had called the Sheriff's Department because an infant was screaming from this woman's house and when they looked through the front door, when no one answered them knocking, they saw three adults sprawled out over furniture and the floor not moving. The SD entered the residence and all three were passed out from, what they believed was, drugs and alcohol. They had EMS check out the adults, while the SD searched for the infant that had gone quiet. They found the child on the floor next to the bed, she had a bump on her head, and they assumed she rolled off the bed. EMS checked the infant and she
Subject “Chris” is a 7 year old middle class Caucasian male. Observation is taking place in the child’s home over the course of two separate afternoons. Chris is a friendly and well spoken child who is small for his age. Chris is the youngest child in his family and both observations take place while his siblings are home. In each case one or both parents are absent.

My observation experience was at the Kalamazoo Public Library Central Branch. The students were around 6 months old to 8 years old. The staff was one older women and two men, an older man and a younger man. They performed a play for the families and their children. I learned that it’s important to keep the children’s attention and try to involve them in the activity. The children did a much better job of being quiet when the performers were talking to them. Also, I learned that children will pay more attention if they are laughing and smiling. The play had some silly parts, but every child had their eyes on the performers during those parts.
Taking a step back to observe a child’s physical, emotional, cognitive, social, and moral development gives great insight into the mind of a child. I observed nine year old, soon to be ten, Abigail. Abigail has three sisters and two brothers. Two of her siblings have already grown into adulthood. Abigail has a sixteen year old sister, thirteen year old brother, and an eight year old sister. Abigail’s parents have been married for twenty-five years and reside in the home with Abigail and four of her aforementioned siblings. Abigail’s parents own their own home and work outside of the home. Among strangers, Abigail is quiet and reserved, yet among friends and family she is friendly and demonstrative. When I set out to observe
I went to the Gracepoint Church’s Fall Fest on Halloween eve. Many interactive booths were prepared for the children, such as ring toss, dance floor, fishing for rubber dolphins, bean bag toss, beading station, and face painting. I hid behind my roommate who was working at the face painting booth that night. The location was perfect because of the high chairs at the booth gave me an easy view of the families in line and the children at the face painting station. I focused this observation on one pair of siblings, whom I will refer to as Jane (5 years old) and John (6 years old). Most children were impatiently waiting in line with their parents, including Jane and John. The two children discussed profusely what painting they wanted on their
For this assignment I went to my local Walmart superstore. I observed many parent child interactions. I will try my best to describe the different situations.
Yesterday I observe Guadalupe and here are the items I observe. The floor is need of a good sweep and mop, since the children sit on the floor everyday before their physical activity the floor should be very clean or swept throughly. The smoke detector is still hanging form the ceiling and gives the game area a destopia feel to it. Several of the rooms are in need of clean-up, especially the Barbie room/Playroom. The dolls were spread out across the floor and there was acclamation dust and grim on the floor around the area of the kids play area. The stuff restrooms were overall clean but the trash was not taken out that day.
Today mom greeted her child with hugs and kisses and the child returned the sentiment. The child wanted to watch Car’s so mom turned on the television to the correct channel. Mom made taco’s for dinner and she asked the child if he was hungry, he said yes and ate his taco seasoned beef with ketchup along with a few nacho chips and for dessert the child wanted an orange.
