Nursing Group Presentation Report

Our group presentation focused on delegation. Although not a new aspect of nursing delegation is becoming an increasingly vital aspect of being a healthcare professional due to ever-increasing changes (Haas, 1999). As nurses we are being expected to increasingly manage and monitor the work of other healthcare professionals, meaning all nurses are taking a leadership role within their caseload, delegating tasks appropriately to other healthcare professionals. Leadership involves focussing on a goal, getting co-workers inspired and driven to act upon the specific goal and providing necessary support and incentive to achieve (Porter-O’Grady, 2003). Leaders should be able to develop an effective and strategic plan of action which visualises the future whilst effectively motivating and managing a team to reach the end goal (Mahoney, 2001). A successful leader needs to be able to problem solve, uphold team effectiveness and develop group identity in order to succeed. I actively listened to other group members through effective communication and took on board their ideas and feedback but I ultimately decided on the content of my written contribution. Democratic leaders succeed in healthcare environments due to their differing skill mix and educational experiences (All Nurses, 2014). I demonstrated excellent communication skills throughout the group work, both verbal and non-verbal, clearly contributing and actively listening to others. Effective communication doesn’t just involve providing others with accurate information when required but foreseeing the requirements of others, delivering information in practical and relevant means and being respectful of the differing attitudes and knowledge of team members (The Health Foundation,
