ABSTRACT: Delegation refers to the practice of a registered nurse assigning certain tasks and activities to other people while still maintaining responsibility for the actions of the others to whom responsibility has been delegated. By definition a leader is a person who leads or commands a group however, I believe a leader should be a person who inspires his team excel in the worst of conditions. A leader should be extraordinary reliable as the team should know that the leader could guide them to the best of his abilities toward their goal. A leader should be persistent as they should be the motivational force leading the group. A leader should be patient and calm knowing that quality takes time and that the individual member of his team have obstacles to overcome on their own part.

Due to the current worldwide nursing shortage, delegation is an essential aspect of the nursing profession. Delegation provides a way in which professionals can assign other employees tasks both to decrease workload and increase satisfactory patient care. However, many individuals within the healthcare system, including myself, do not fully understand the concept or importance of delegation. After doing my research, I have gained a new perspective of delegation, and some of the issues involved. There are many actions being taking to educate students as well as professionals of the true meaning of delegation and what all it entails.

Delegation is one of the most complex skills a nurse leader has to face. It requires great judgment (high critical thinking) skills for patient care. Effective delegation is based on one’s state nurse practice act and an understanding on the concepts of responsibility, authority, and accountability. (as cited by Weydt, Alice, May 31, 2010)

The American Nurses Association (ANA) characterizes delegation as “the transfer of responsibility for the performance of an activity from one individual to another, with the former retaining responsibility for the outcome…” This poses a dilemma for new and seasoned nurses alike. Nurse have incredible amount of responsibility placed on them with not enough hours to complete it all. Add to this the current and projected shortage of RN’s and it is easy to see why delegation is an important component to future nursing practice. This results in a climate where many times the nurse has to delegate in order to complete her job within the time specified.

To provide safety, critical thinking, stability and time usage the registered nurse needs to take several steps to foster effective delegation. Several steps in the delegation process that need to be followed using appropriate authority. These include, selecting “ the right task under the right circumstances, to the right person, with the right direction and communication, and under the right supervision and evaluation” (Yoder-Wise, 2015).

Effective delegation by registered nurses is a concern within nursing and health care management. Effective delegation by registered nurses is of concern at all times. With the growing demands placed upon registered nurses, effective delegation has become increasingly pressing in order for registered nurses to be able to concentrate on their performance nursing activities. Registered nurses are frequently team leaders and are responsible for the nursing processes and outcomes regarding patient care. 'As the health care system continues to restructure, registered nurses are finding an increased number of lesser-skilled workers assigned to deliver patient care ' (Parsons, 1998 ). This process requires management and delegation skills. Delegation is one of the key factors in effective teamwork, the improvement of the delegation skills of registered nurses would be of great benefit. 'Delegation has to do with human resources being used to their fullest potential ' (Kaernested & Bragadottir, 2012). Good delegation skills can have a positive impact on teamwork and job satisfaction, providing registered nurses with more time to fulfil their professional role expectations, and reduce the staff turnover rate. Registered nurses working in the acute care setting, despite high workloads are reluctant to delegate. Many registered nurses find delegation time consuming and therefore easier to attend to tasks themselves. When

A leader must have the skill to reflect on past and attend the presentation and make a clear image of future. Likewise, the leader must be able to share the vision and plans to people. They must make their vision clear to people so that they can follow and work together enthusiastically. A leader must be able to make people that they are heard and understand. Also, a leader must be able to know the passion, motivating factors and identify aspirations of people and make them believe that they can achieve something. Similarly, a leader must share their excitement and dreams with other members so that others also get energized to work together to achieve a goal (Kouzes and Posner

There are three main qualities a leader must have to be successful. The first, is communication. A leaders job is to lead the group to numerous objectives, and they must be well interpreted for the rest of the group to be achieved. Awareness is also a big focus when communicating to the group. You know which members need to be led more than others, and its your job as a captain or coach to treat every player differently. (Communication).

A leader needs to “believe” in oneself and have the confidence that whatever you say will excite and what you do can motivate others. You must be optimistic about what you do, do have some relevance for being in existence. Believe it or not, “leadership begins with you”.

A leader should be willing to treat all of the members and employees as a team, instead of trying to be the main authority. The leader should allow collaboration amongst the team members, allows for flexibility for learning, and provide transparency throughout the organization ( U.S. Department of Education, 2011). A leader should posses the ability to motivate others, be willing to have open communication and listening between the team members, be willing to take risks, have a shared vision between all of the team members, and value others (DeKlein & Penstone, 1994). The leader should create an environment allowing for the team members to have a safe learning environment (Garvin, Edmondson, & Gino, 2008).

A leader is a person who guides a group with through a situation. A leader’s actions and words will determine his or her reputation as a leader. Good leaders possess similar characteristics, such as strong organizational skill, trustworthy, approachable and a visionary. A good leader has the ability to use his or her team members’ strengths to enhance a group’s productivity. Along with being able to successfully manage groups of people, a good leader must possess the ability to inspire, encourage, challenge and support the people around them. Under good leadership people will rise to challenge and surpass expectations.
