NFPA 70ee Reflection

Over the course of this semester, I have learned a lot about who I am. I have discovered things that I did not know about myself. Choosing Spelman College as an institute to education myself at was only the first step that I took. Overcoming the challenges that it has brought is the second step that I am yet taking. I am slowly, but surely transforming into a Free Thinking Woman.

My first encounter with a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthesia (CRNA) was during my undergraduate nursing OB/GYN rotation. I was impressed with the CRNA when she placed the epidural to the patient in labor. I remembered patient had difficulty staying still due to the contraction, but the CRNA took her time to explain the procedure while comforting the distressed patient. Once the epidural was in placed and the medication started working, I could tell the relief the patient experienced. I realized then that a CRNA goes beyond the delivery of anesthesia, pain management and monitoring of patients. Thus, obtaining this degree will prepare me to ease the patient’s mind through education, pain management, monitoring, experience and compassion.

Moving ahead to the middle of this course has me feeling confident in my ability to define computer terms in various  business situations. In addition to this, the INFT124 class also helps me remember the names of basic computer parts and it also helps me competently explain how computers function. These activities also help me advance my computer knowledge, experience and competencies so I know how to complete challenging academic tasks.

Upon reflection of the FYE 105 course material from this semester I realized there have been many techniques I have been able to improve or learn new strategies for academic success in the pursuit of lifelong learning. After being out of a traditional school for over twenty years, my academic success strategy began with obtaining a rhythm of life and school. Once I developed and implemented a good personal time management routine that allowed ample time for the many competing activities life brings, I was on course for success in achieving my goals. One aspect of this class that had a significant impact on my academic success was modifying the way I took notes to include all essential information in an easy to read and review format. I will be able to use the notetaking and time management techniques I have learned this semester in not only all future courses but in any environment requiring detailed notes and strict time management to ensure success.

Last year, I set the goal that I wanted to pass the 2017 AP Studio Art 2-D: Design Exam. I wanted to prove my art ability. For the portfolio, I had to create 12 pieces that demonstrated a theme and 12 pieces that show experimentation. Sadly, I needed 6 pieces still. For a week before the exam, I worked on the other pieces everyday. Drawing, then adding Ink, then adding white out, then adding cutouts. The night before, I stayed up until 4am to finish. I was able to successfully finish my portfolio and I received a 5 on it. This year I submitted an application for the YoungArts competition and I hope to become a finalist.

Education has always been a key importance in my life, but I have had some challenges along the way. In August of 2013, I injured my left ankle, while at work and I would have never imagined the long road I would have ahead of me and how it would take a toll on my education. When I originally injured my ankle, I was told that it was just a simple sprain, that ended up not being the case to any extent. I was transferred from doctor to doctor to doctor, each one telling me something different, and each one being wrong about their diagnosis. The second physician I saw, but my first ankle specialist, repeatedly told me that he felt that I was lying about my injury and was only looking to get attention. This took a strong emotional toll on me, repeatedly being told that they could not

A few months into this program, I fell flat on my face. I had been doing well juggling the ever-growing list of assignments, until we were assigned Lab Report #1. The science concepts went over my head, resulting in false information as well as a poorly written, list-like paper with many mechanical errors and no flow. Once I received the rubric in my mailbox, I was completely devastated and disappointed in myself, this was the first time I failed. In that moment, I decided to rebound from this and not let it define my year, so I met with Mr. Mercurio and rewrote it, most of it from scratch. As part of a restructure in a one form entry primary school, I was appointed the position of being part of the School Improvement Team and Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCO). The SENCO role was previously overseen by the Headteacher whom I work closely with in relation to both of the positions I hold. As well as having these responsibilities within the school, I am a full-time class teacher in Year 2.

Apollo Career Center partnership with MRC in 2016 through 2017 has been excellent. Apollo works with Brandon Fisher from allen county health department here in lima ohio. Brandon has helped us and MRC us and MRC grow and continue growing with us seniors involved. He has given us his own study material for FEMA test allowing us to participate as patients in lima memorial hospital evacuation drill. These opportunity giving us students insight of how things work and how things are ran and how much planning and preparing it takes.words can't express our thanks it is something we will remember long after this competition.

For me, the time with her (even though five outside sessions is a lot of outside work) has likely been the most beneficial aspect of this course. I have been able to take lessons learned from class and utilize them in our time together, but they have mostly been done in a way that works for us. As usual, I will also talk about the demonstrations that took place.
