My Career As A Career

Having many values in my life, the assessment found three that stood out to me. Favorably, I am accustomed to helping others. If I see someone struggling with tasks or comprehension, I always try to help them understand. I can remember when I was a toddler how creative I was. I would often fill my days with telling my family stories and making up songs that my imagination couldn’t hold on to. Being 21 now, creativity has still been a major key factor in success. Thinking of ways to improve computer programs at work is part of the creativity. Being stable is the most important to me. Being without a job, a car, and money, are all key factors that could possibly hold me back from not having a successful career.

My career values are in enjoying what I do. These values help me to fulfill my purpose by relating what’s important to me in all areas of my life.

I really like how the website broke down each job showing you required skills, task, wages and everything else. I found it very helpful and actually made me reconsidered careers I thought I would love, and also ones I never really considered before. Overall I would have to say the most important thing was this lesson showed me I am on the right path to finding my future career. The information i received from learning about my interest and possible career paths can help me in preparing me for my business capstone class. In this class the information helped me by preparing me for a job I might want later in life. Also it's preparing me to understand the work, time, and effort you have to put in to complete this job. I’ve had an interesting nine weeks in Career Exploration. I learned an abundant amount of different skills, personality types, and careers. The assessments informed me more about myself and what group I am statistically. I also learned that the Holland Codes helped me understand my personality types and needs. Also, being in the class helped me realize that I haven’t met all my needs.

Elective courses can additionally provide guidance to high school students when it comes to occupational choice. It is written that, “…Roslyn High School recently added nine electives, many in business specialties like sports and entertainment marketing, investments, and accounting because many of its graduates pursue business careers” (Hu, 2008, para. 7). It is difficult for students to discover if they would truly enjoy a professional career by simply knowing they enjoy math class. The opportunity to gain knowledge from multiple career paths made me excited to attend. One leader spoke of learning about career paths he didn’t know existed. He explained that he spoke with individuals who worked in group. He explained how that help develop his desire to work in group. I felt that I knew of multiple career paths from my experience but came prepared to learn from multiple people.

The first topic that I found kept reappearing throughout the course, is the idea of happiness, and what it means to strive for happiness in ones career. All of the speakers and books agree on this one idea- happiness is the most important thing when it comes to looking for a job; do what makes you happy.

On August 31, 2016 Assistant Dean Melissa Furman administered the Career Assessment Exercise in my Intro to Business class. The assessment had several questions to answer that eventually lead me to my ideal career based off my answers. The questions varied in several subjects like my leadership capabilities, learning interest, and my other likes or dislikes.

In lesson one, it talks about IT job roles and career opportunities. Such as, web site designers, people who create the look and feel of a web site. This could benefit me because it could be an IT career that would touch on my love of art. In career opportunities, it teaches me how to conduct a job search, like, participating in on-campus interviews, searching the newspaper classified ads for jobs, and attending job/career fairs. Following these tips can help me find a job that better interests me.

Many people are very fortunate to realize very early on what their passions and interests are. Unfortunately, I have not had the same fate as some of these people, and my journey towards finding my passions has been a longer one. Figuring out my career path has been a tedious task and as I get closer to graduating and integrating myself into the workforce it is a constant battle. BA101 has been a good support in finding myself at a deeper level, and perhaps the insights provided by this class will help me figure out this dilemma of my life through the evaluation of my skills and interests.

This class is the second in a series of career development sessions during our professional development-1 course. The class started with a small exercise, in which we have to write about what we are going to do if we won a jackpot and we do not have to worry more about money. Following that we started to describe to us about the occupation themes, the personal style scale. In addition, Ms. provided us with our reports regarding the survey which we have completed in the beginning of the semester. Finally, we start discuss if the results from the report do fit our personality and career expectations in the future. Following this I am going to talk about what I learned about myself and about

"The judge has made his decision, the accused has been found guilty." These are the words that one day I will finally hear. My future goal is to be a lawyer. A lawyer is a professional person authorized to practice law. They defend or prosecute people for the crimes they have committed. (dictionary.com) I am very out spoken and believe in fighting for what I want or think is right.

This lesson mainly addressed aspects related to career development. This lesson encourages students to discover their academic and personal strengths, their skillsets, and their interests. Students then take those concepts and apply them to career exploration. They are able to link their strengths, preferences, and abilities to potential future career paths. Some of the specific aspects of career development that I addressed include applying planning and career exploration in setting and obtaining lifelong career goals, applying necessary skills for career readiness and success, and teaching students where and how to obtain information about post-secondary options. In this lesson students are encouraged to apply decision making skills to place different careers into the appropriate career fields. In doing so, they are also encouraged to begin thinking about careers that are of interest to them and what career goals they have for themselves. They will be given resources in order to continue career exploration outside of the classroom. While I do not expect sixth graders to fully decide their career path, it is my firm belief that it is never too early to get students thinking about careers and having them set goals in order to obtain the career and future that they desire. I also believe that this unit touches on social and emotional development as well as academic development. This lesson allows the student to collaborate with one another and work in groups as well as in pairs. This promotes relationship building and teamwork. It also allows students to take an inventory of their personal strengths and skillsets. This could boost self-esteem and promotes a sense of self-awareness. Lastly, this unit also encompasses academic development. Students will understand that good grades and academic success are key elements to obtaining the career that they wish to have. By being academically successful, this will allow them greater options and opportunity post high school graduation.

Finding a specific career path can not only be difficult, but it can also induce bouts of anxiety, anger, and sadness over a crucial part of an individual’s life. Settling on a career can be unnerving when thinking about the fact that this is the career that you spend thousands of dollars on in college, that this is the career you will work in until you retire. With this course, I’ve found that it has been easier to narrow down a goal towards finding a career. Through career assessments, different assignments and discussions, I have realized what my barriers and strengths are. Overcoming these and improving these skills or applying them to an actual career assisted me in narrowing my goal as well. I am now able to clearly see the advantages and disadvantages of my career goal and to think clearer about the next steps that I will take after this course.
