Bruno Albertassi Mrs. Schwartz HIST 100 9/5/14 DBQ Week 2 Locals from Virginia had to deal with many different agricultural problems. Farming in Northampton County was not as rewarding as living in areas like the James and the York. “Early inhabitance of Northampton County could not escape the omnipresent influence of the sea…They were for the most part, small scale producers of grain, tobacco, and livestock.”(Breen, Innes 37) What really devastated this reign was the lack of trade routes due to the shallow harbor and creeks. Many powerful storms from all four seasons destroyed the coast. These storms altered the geographic representation of Northampton County. Men and women were abused being mentally, physically and even sexually. There was an account where a little boy was caught trying to run away because he was unhappy of the treatment he was receiving from his master. So to punish the boy he was whipped. After the whipping the boy was beat. This poor boy was killed, many speculate that it was abuse that killed him and some people said it was illness. (Breen, Inner 64) Female servants were used for other things like sexually pleasure. This was a huge problem for many women. If a woman becomes pregnant with the child of her master she must work for an extra two more years with the churchwardens. This extension of contract helped many women to deny the masters sexual orders. Being an indentured servant may not be a great choice but for some people it is the only choice they have if they want to dwell in the new
