The following literature review is all about how cyber bullying affects the life of the ones who got bullied, the chances of committing suicide among the victims and the laws in several states regarding cyber bullying.
According to Erik Manriquez (University of Texas at El Paso) “Cyber bullying is very similar to traditional bullying. Cyber bullying involves more emotional and psychological harm. Cyber bullying can also lead to violence, if the cyber bully decides to physically attack their victim. Cyber bullying has a broader audience; anyone in the world can see the hateful messages left by a bully. Cyber bullying can involve social networking sites, text messages, websites, and emails. Humiliating messages and videos can spread fast and cause more harm. There have been several killings and suicides due to cyber bullying. At any given time of day, anyone can access an abundant amount of information at the click of a button. Men, women, kids, teenagers, adults and even the elderly are learning how to use the internet to their advantage. Among all the benefits the internet has provided to us, online communication has proven to be the most beneficial. Social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter and MySpace have made it easy for everyone to stay in contact with each other. Regardless of how far apart a family member or friend is, everyone is just one click away. If someone is not having a good day, they can share their feelings with everyone in a matter of seconds. These social networking sites have become quite popular among adolescents. They allow teens to stay more connected with their friends outside of school. Now teens have become more obsessed with their friends Facebook or Twitter status than engaging in outdoor activities like football or
Parallel the development of technology, social networking becomes widespreadly with people in the world today. Everyone is spending a large amount of time using these websites in order to satisfy their demand in life by surfing the internet and having many social networking services such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram,… The statistics in the article Social Networking Fact Sheet present that 74% of online adults use social networking sites (January 2014), 56% of internet users do at least one of the creating or curating activities we studied and 32% of internet users do both creating and curating activities (August 2012). In addition, according to 30 Statistics about Teens and Social Networking, written by Taylor Thomas, studying with American teens, 73% of teens are on a social network and a lot of teens ages 12-17 go online, accounted for 93%. As a result, many people have not fully understand what benefits that social network can bring to users. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to discuss the effects of social networking and to show the advantages and disadvantages when using it.
Social networking is the mainstream way to communicate with anyone. Teenagers are obsessed with social networking, no one calls each other unless it’s extreme circumstances or their mother. Sharing pictures, sharing life stories, and sharing opinions online has been the way of life and the norm for kids growing up with computers and smart phones. The parents to this generation have not grown up in the same environment and have different standards for online activity. In the Article “ 10 Reasons Why I Avoid Social Networking Services” written by Alan Norton, he lists why he does not use social networking services. His personal beliefs are backed up with statistics and hold true to many people in his generation but not in the younger ones.
In our time today, there are many types of "bullying", but the one type I believe can be the worse and the one I will be discussing will be “Cyber bullying.” Cyber Bullying is an action when people either get together or by themselves purposely threaten or harass another kid through social media, such as Twitter or Facebook. The use of smart phones makes this action so easy to do and we can't really do anything to stop it from happening. These people can go and tweet about something any part of the day. All types of bullying are usually related in some type of way but the action of doing it is usually much different. Cyber bullying is one of the worst types of
The use of social networking sites is rising at great rates. According to a report conducted by the Pew Internet & American Life Project in 2012, ninety-five percent of individuals aged 12-17 use the internet; and eighty-one percent of those use social network sites (Pew Interest). Although it is known that social media can have a useful impact on lives, often times people forget that with a positive comes a negative. The continual use of social network sites will impact teen lives more negatively than positively because they can cause huge distractions from valuable and critical pursuits like education; they can also cause mental health issues and a reduction in communication skills.
Social media has dramatically changed the world and the way we communicate with each other. We are now in the era of Google, Facebook, and Twitter. Anyone in the planet is just a click far from us and every information is handy in our smartphones. Social media has evolved as the tool that created a gigantic difference in the way individuals interact, promote their opinions, share thoughts, and even impact others. Especially teenagers and youths spend more time in social media than anyone else. According to the report by Pew Research Center published in 2015, 92% of teens go online daily including 24% who go online almost
Michael M. Honda states that “everyone in America likely has a bullying story, whether as a victim, bully, or as a witness.” Cyberbullying has become a major epidemic in the modern day world because everyone has access to the internet in some way. By taking an in depth look at cyberbullying, one can see just how urgent it is to stop it, because not only can it strike anywhere at any time, cyberbullying can also lead to suicide and cause serious mental health issues.
The rapid growth of technology in our society has become more dominant than it was in the 17th and 18th century. Today, technology is used for almost everything in our day to day lives. But the most common usage of technology is for communication and industrialization. However, every good thing has its disadvantage if it is over used, and since technology has become very dominant, it is used by both young and older people but more predominant among the youth of the today. Even more, technology has brought about social networking such as Facebook, Twitter, my space, piazza.com, instagram, tango, and last but not the least texting. According to socialnetworking.procon.org, “47% of American adults used social networking sites like
Victims can suffer from a lack of confidence, poor social skills, zero self-esteem and the inability to socialize with the outside world. As a child victim of bullying the chances of further problems in their adult lives is inevitable, they can suffer from health issues like absenteeism and depression as well as physical health, insecurity and become emotionally unstable. Cyber-bullying on the other hand possess a serious health threat towards victims causing more psychological damage than traditional bullying (Barback, 2012). All these can lead a child even an adult towards serious harm or to their death
There is no doubt that technology today, and the use of the internet is an outstanding resource, when it is used appropriately. Today’s society consists of many young bloggers, video- bloggers, and a ton of social media (networking) users. One of the biggest social media sites used for interaction among peers, and families, is Facebook. Facebook became popular instantly as a social media site in which you can share your thoughts, opinions, photos, and videos with friends, and family. To register for Facebook the required age is 13 years old, and one can register by entering a birthdate; with no questions asked, a click of a button, and an agreement to
Have you ever been cyber bullied? Do you know someone who has been cyber bullied? Do you understand how being cyber bullied feels? Can you imagine the amount of agony teenagers go through when they’re being cyber bullied? If you do, then you know that cyber bullying must be stopped! Cyber bullying can diminish a teen’s self-esteem, bring teens into depression, and worst of all cyber bullying can lead to teenagers committing suicide.
Bullying is a worldwide epidemic, it happens no matter where we are, or who we are. This problem faces many women, children and men. It occurs in all different environments like school, work or even just walking down the street. Many people are often a victim of cyber-bullying “The use of electronic communication to bully a person, typically by sending messages of an intimidating or threatening nature” (Google). Cyber-bullying effects many people internally, it can cause depression, anxiety, and self-esteem issues in all people, including the individual doing the bullying. There are many studies of cyber-bullying, the main area being high schools, a lot of cyber-bullying tends to stem off of the peers of the victim and others think it stems
Cyber-bullying has become a fast growing problem in the nation. Due to the growth of technology today. Most cyber-bullying cases are likely to occur at school. Cyber-bullying is done through the use of cell phones, social media, and Email services. There are however steps to reduce the cyber-bullying at schools, and at home. Elementary School students that have become victims to cyber-bullying, for example, go through name calling such as you are gay or making fun of their clothes. Students are harassed, threatened with the use of violence, making up false rumors, and even taking pictures, or a video of a student to sexually blackmail them. Students Self-esteem, academics and social skills are also affected. Many students commit suicide due to the result of bullying.
NOW THAT YOU KNOW WHAT CYBER-BULLYING IS AND HAVE HEARD SOME EXAMPLES, I WANT TO GO OVER SOME ACCREDITED RESEARCH DONE ON CYBER-BULLYING WITH CHILDREN. THE NATIONAL CRIME PREVENTION COUNCIL REPORTS THAT CYBER-BULLYING IS A PROBLEM THAT AFFECTS ALMOST HALF OR AMERICAN TEENS. IN 2008, RESEARCHERS SAMEER HINDUJA FROM FLORIDA ATLANTIC UNIVERSITY, AND JUSTIN PATCHIN FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN EAU CLAIR PUBLISHED A BOOK THAT SUMMARIZED THE THEN CURRENT STATE OF CYBER-BULLYING RESEARCH. IN THEIR BOOK TITLED BULLYING BEYOND THE SCHOOLYARD, PREVENTING AND RESPONDING TO CYBER-BULLYING, THEIR RESEARCH DOCUMENTS SHOWED THAT CYBER-BULLYING INSTANCES HAD BEEN INCREASING OVER THE LAST SEVERAL YEARS. USING A RANDOM SAMPLE OF 2000 MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS FROM A LARGE SCHOOL DISTRICT ABOUT 10% OR ROUGHLY 200 OF THE 2000 STUDENTS HAD BEEN CYBER BULLIED JUST WITHIN THE PAST MONTH. AND ABOUT 17% OR ROUGHLY 340 OF THE 2000 STUDENTS HAD REPORTED BEING CYBER-BULLIED AT LEAST ONCE IN THEIR LIFE. ALTHOUGH THESE RATES WHERE A BIT LOWER THAN THEIR PREVIOUS FINDINGS, HINDUJA AND PATCHIN POINT OUT THAT THE EARLIER STUDIES WERE CONDUCTED AMONG OLDER CHILDREN AND OLDER CHILDREN USE THE INTERNET MORE FREQUENT THAN YOUNGER CHILDREN SO THEY ARE MORE LIKELY TO EXPERIENCE CYBER-BULLYING THAN YOUNGER CHILDREN. DEBBIE HEIMOWITZ, A STANFORD UNIVERSITY MASTER’S STUDENT, CREATED A FILM BASED ON
Cyber bullying by definition is the use of electronic communication to bully a person, typically by sending messages of an intimidating or threatening nature. This occurs mainly among young people ages between 13- 18. Base on my research I found out in the past decade, there have been multiple cyberbullying cases that ended with the victims taking their own lives. I believe there is more we can do to help with this issue. There is information out there that is accessible to us so we can play a role in helping to decrease or stop cyber bulling.
There are also other areas in the field of cyber bullying research that require further examination. An important question to focus on is whether these effects can generalize to other types of victimization, and if these effects persist years after being victimized. The main independent variables that will be examined are face to face bullying, also known as direct bullying, and indirect bullying, which is bullying through spreading rumours and information to others who then continue the cycle. These variables were chosen as alternative types of victimization to determine if the effects of cyber bullying generalize to these types of victimization. The outcome variables are the follow up psychosocial consequences of bullying such as suicide, helplessness, academic problems, delinquency and depression.
