Income Inequality

The last issue concerning wealth inequality is the health and well being of the lower class. The high rates of social problems: lower rates of performance in school, life expectancy, incarceration, teenage pregnancy along with health problems like obesity and heart disease are directly effected by the United States high inequality. The reason for poor school performance is that children of the lower class typically do not plan on going to college because they cannot afford it. If they do not plan on going to college, they don’t believe there is a reason to put a lot of effort and succeed in high school.

Income Inequality is a major problem that has been going on in America for decades. Many people feel that it barely exists today, but those people are very uneducated and don’t really care about the huge problem in front of them the many people that feel that way are highly uneducated, and seem to not really care about which has been gradually increasing instead of decreasing. Unfortunately, there’s not much that can be done, only of course if the poor class of people decide to actually educate themselves and get a higher education. One says poor class, simply because that’s how they’re classified. There are five types of levels that Americans are classified as, and they are: Upper Class, Upper Middle Class, Middle Class, Working Class, Poor. The highest percentage of Americans fall in the Poor department, and it has been that way for decades, and will continue to be that way for decades to come.

Branching off of financial aid for education, think of all the other financial benefits that the government offers. Such as social security, food stamps, and healthcare. With the prosperity of our economy, these things will be less of a burden on our government and everyday tax payers. This increase in minimum wage will help everyone overall. Health care will become cheaper due to the fact that companies are paying their employees a fixed rate that they can live comfortably with. As the rate increases we will see the use of food stamps dwindle. There will be no need for these food stamps when families can afford their groceries and necessities with their own cash, due to a higher minimum wage. Social Security will gain more money from the employee’s checks, helping later generations. This higher income will give the elderly more support with their social security income. When the minimum wage is higher, our daily and life lasting necessities will be benefited greatly.

Without realizing it, most of us live in a bubble. This impermeable layer makes us oblivious to what's going on in the world and ignorant to the truth. In the United States alone, the amount of people in poverty is 14.5%. That equates to 45.3 million people in 2013. In a country like America, one of the world’s superpowers, it’s embarrassing to admit. But the main issue is to fix issues like these with the minimum wage and welfare. The minimum wage applies to workers who got a job whether because they were in school or because they had not gone to college and had no other option. Most of the country lives off as minimum wage workers as only 1% of the world’s population has a college degree. Minimum wage needs to be adjusted to modern inflation. But the minimum wage allegedly does not affect poverty at all says a large demographic and does not need to be adjusted. The minimum wage makes up a lot of the country and should be adjusted or modified to today’s standard of living.

A potential solution that could perhaps help to reduce poverty and inequality could be to increase the minimum wage as well as to raising the overtime salary and index it to inflation, maintain and provide safety net programs such as SNAP, and other programs, create more jobs, provide Medicaid as well as making sure that people can afford health coverage, making sure people/ young teens with children can afford and access a child care, helping low income individuals better their education and provide “fully fund Pell Grants” (10 Solutions to Fight Economy Inequality), having the government spend less money on prisons and instead invest the money into more schools, programs, etc. There are many more potential solutions and things that could be done to either minimize, better or maybe even get rid of Income Inequality, it’s all just up to whoever is willing to make a change and then people will be able to start having and receive a much better

Supporters may say that raising the wage of minimum wage would be the main solution to consider aiding in the economic struggle of poverty. 14.5 percent of Americans live below the poverty line. This is a result of major employment decreasing due to employers moving towards hiring more and more people that have at least an associate degree in that field of work, young adults starting to have children before they are financially stable, and tax laws seemingly always changing that deems unfit for low class citizens to pay. The United States is often viewed as a wealthy and stable country, but as shown in 2011, “the richest fifth of American households received about 51.1 percent of total income, while the poorest fifth received about 3.2 percent” (McConnell). There are many sources of income inequality that effect poverty in the United States and the role that discrimination plays in reducing and increasing wages for different people and how the people of the United States are affected by it.

Inequality is not favorable in society. There is inequality in many aspects of our society, such as race, and gender. The main inequality we look at is income inequality in the United States. The one percent of the population control a vast majority of the United States currency. The Gini coefficient has been increasing ever since the Industrial Revolution, a period where education, manufacturing, and economics has shown growth. However, income inequality has increased in the Industrial Revolution. There are many events, and causes that have led to the rise of income equality in the United States.

To begin, why should more money go to people who didn’t try hard to be better? In no way am I saying that all people at minimum wage are not hard working. According to United States Department of Labor, in 2015, over 62,670,000 over the age of 25 work at or below minimum wage. To earn a bachelor's degree it would take 4 years. If most people graduate at age 17 or 18, they could potentially get a bachelor’s degree at 22. So most of the people working over the age 25 at minimum wage either could not work using the degree they have, were unable to go to college for financial reasons (But even then they could have taken out student loans, or used financial aid), or were unable to go to college because they did poor in high school. For the people who did poorly in high school why should they get more money? They chose not to put in the time and effort that is necessary to succeed in society.

The problem of income inequality is one that is very prevalent in this time in America. The disparity of wealth in this country is very vast and a growing problem. These problems of income inequality are taking away peoples aspect human dignity, this is a major moral issue because everyone is entitled to human dignity and when it is taken away from them that is moral wrong. Additionally this is an issue in which the Church is very involved in. Low income families have to have to pay a more for loans, and interest rates things than middle class and have less job opportunity.
