At first when I found out I was going to have to do this essay I was not too excited. I had no idea what I could possibly write about because I did not know that things I did on the average day could be considered community service. “Community Service is important for many reasons. Taking part and volunteering teaches compassion and understanding. You can volunteer for something you really believe and have an interest in, and can volunteer as much or as little as you'd like or have time for.” Community service is really easy to get into. I mean, it is not like you have to put out an application and have an interview in order to do it. It is really easy to get into, and is really fun. It is things you wouldn’t even think are considered, like: …show more content…
It benefits me in a lot of ways as well. For instance, I get extra credit, opportunities to get ribbons, and the opportunity to get to go on the canoe trip for free. When I help my grandma and the neighbors I help with things around the house, babysit, and do yard work. Babysitting isn’t exactly my favorite thing, but I do it to help out. Most of the things I do I don’t mind doing. I love helping out. At my church I help clean, watch the kids, organize the youth group, plan plays, plan trips, and serve communion. Helping out at the church is one of my favorite things to do because I get to do so much. My favorite things that I do at the church are with the youth group. I organize who all needs a ride, what we will be working on that day, and the activity afterwards. I also plan the trips in the summer and which camp we will go to. And at church events I keep an eye on the kids for their parents and find things fun for them to do. I clean up after church, meetings, and events. Usually it only takes a little over an hour and a half to do. On Sundays I serve communion and sometimes I even read scripture. We do an Easter play and a Christmas play every year and I help decide what play we will do and organize the meetings and the performance
When a good service becomes mandatory, it loses the effect it had originally. In Volunteering to Graduate: Do We Need More Requirements? by Miriam Dodge, the author makes an important point about community service. “... making a selfless
During my four hours of community service, I did many things such as mowing grass, throw wastes into the dumpster by driving a tractor, and clean the sidewalk by using a wind blower. To other people, it may seem like that there are just light duty work, but to me every work done will make the community look better no matter how light
Most of my free time is spent involving myself within my community. I volunteer at Celerity Dyad Charter School, St. Odilia School, church youth group, and cleaning my community. I enjoy helping out since I know I’m improving my community. These experiences have helped me develop skills of interacting with people from different cultures. I also involve myself at school with Cooking club, Delta club, Spanish club, Dance team, Folklorico team, National Honor Society, and Bachata team. I will continue being an involved person because I get to experience different places and people.
Service in the school and community is an insight to your character and work ethic. I have over 20 hours of community service from many different experiences. Last summer I worked for Camp Barakel, a summer camp, in the kitchen. I assisted in serving food and cleaning. I learned discipline and teamwork through this valuable experience. Not only this I’ve worked with the Elderly in Rehabilitation centers and the patience and nurturing qualities is something that will forever be valuable in my life. Last but not least working as Big Sister or Buddy to a 4th grade girl has given me the chance to positively impact and influence her life as simply as having a friend is immense. All of these service opportunities as added to my character and prepared me for the responsibilities of
When I go to Bible Study, I help out the little kids there and help them study. I also help around the school. For example, on the day of the Valentine's Dance, I stayed with my cousin and helped clean up after the dance even though I wasn't an NJHS member. I volunteered without hesitation. Also, the day of school orientation I helped my cousin (who is in the NJHS)give people their schedules. Sometimes when I finish all of my work early, I help the teachers. I ask them if they need help. I also help the custodians. I clean under the tables, so the custodian doesn't have to do it. That's basically what I do to help around the
Community service, one of the several pillars outlined by the National Honors Society (NHS), is defined as the desire to work and serve the community in order to improve the conditions for the citizens who dwell in it. Most importantly, those who uphold those standards do so without the need of money, or recognition; they are simply intrinsically motivated to make the world a better place. It wasn’t until I volunteered at an event hosted by the Jubilee Center that I learned the true meaning of community service and charity.
Winston Churchill’s quote "We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give" embodies what community service is really about. Over the years I have had the pleasure of working for several organization and volunteering in a variety of different areas. There has been a community service experience that changed my life tremendously though. From 2009 until 2014 I had the amazing opportunity to work for the Nash-Edgecombe County Teen Court Program and doing so profoundly shaped my future.
Serving my community and giving back to others has always been a huge part of my life. From a young age, my parents instilled in me a love of helping those around me and a want to make my community a better place. One of the biggest areas of community service I have been a part of is at my local church and through my high school’s mini cheer camp.
Community service is an act that should be done with an open heart. Although it was not recorded I have done a few community services willingly. In high school, I was a part of a program for college readiness, the Upward Bound Program. The program played an enormous role in my enrollment to Florida International University, therefore I intend to keep in touch with them and I would pay them a visit them during my free times. During the holiday season of 2016, I voluntarily helped with the Christmas luncheon the Upward Bound Program conducted for the students currently in the program. It was frankly an unprompted act, I ran into my close friend while going to the cafeteria for breakfast, she informed me that she was going to help Upward Bound
Before high school, community service never crossed my mind at any point during my life. Going to public school, I knew that nobody cared about service and since I didn’t have to, I never did anything for my town. Thirteen year-old me had only 3 things on my mind:
In addition to volunteering at my local church I have also have given my time to help my community outside of the church. First of all, I really enjoy help other
Imagine immigrating to a foreign country where uncertainty and unfamiliarity awaits. That was my family in October 2008 when we arrived in America as refugees, deprived of basic necessities such as food and clothing. We faced difficulties adjusting to the culture and meeting our needs. However, volunteers of all ages from different charities delivered and donated foods, clothing, and presents, and warmly welcomed us with comfort during a time of major adjustment in our lives. They guided my family in our transition as we apply for schools and jobs. Volunteering was also a rare and uncommon practice in my birth country, so the number of volunteers helping us in America made a good impression of the country to my family. As I grew up and attend high school in America, I realized the amazing and endless opportunities for young people to make a difference in other’s lives by feeding the homeless, responding to natural disasters, caring for the elderlies, cleaning the community, saving the lives of animals, and much more. Community service should be required to graduate high school because it provides essential skills, builds character, and promotes higher education for a successful life.
I think one of my most important volunteer jobs is being classroom assistant. Not necessarily teaching but helping out in the classroom, setting things up for the children and when it’s outdoor playtime being an next set of eyes. Teachers can always use the extra help in the classroom, with so many students around. Next is helping out in the kitchen, helping to serve the food the children, the staff can focus on getting the children where they need to be and preparing the food. The next is people willing to help in the office, this can just be simple filling to helping to make sure that certain items are in stock. Volunteer cleanup is always important, focusing on cleaning up the playground and making sure thing the place is fun and safe for
It’s been proven that teenagers (ages 13-20 years old) actually benefit from doing community service. The service benefits them personally, when applying to jobs and more importantly college. I did notice that having multiple accounts of community service did in fact help me when it came to applications. It has shown that I have developed a sense of responsibility and social connections throughout my community. By volunteering it has also helped me condense my search for a career, by showing me what they do day to day.
Kids and teens in school these days are told to work hard to benefit their future. There’s so many options for colleges and careers. Sometimes it’s hard for students to get recognized by colleges even if there academics are amazing or you're a stellar athlete. These students are missing a piece, community service.
