No matter what you do in life whether it is being a teacher, cop, secretary, forensic scientist, or in my case, Marine, you will always find one thing in common. Within all of these jobs you will find that accountability is very important. You will also find that within keeping accountability you will not succeed. Accountability is knowing the amount of items or people in which you are responsible for. Accountability is also knowing where the items and people are at all times. While knowing where everything and everyone is, you also need to keep record of everything. All the aspects of accountability are important because without it things would be in chaos. That includes keeping it in good condition and not losing it. If you lose this gear you will end up paying for it. This gear isn’t cheap so having accountability is important. If you are the one issuing out the gear you need to make sure it gets returned when it needs to. This means keeping signatures on file. Also, keeping accountability of everything you have. When you are doing inventory on your gear you will know if something is missing if the numbers don’t add up. That is one time that keeping record of things will come in handy. You can look back to see if someone issued it out and who it was. Another time that keeping everything on record will be when someone tries to say they returned there gear but yet you do not have it. You can go back and make sure they signed their name when they brought the gear back. If they did, it will end up being your loss. If they did not, it will end up being there loss. When you are a Marine who is single or does not have a child, you live in the barracks. When you live in the barracks things are provided to you. Such as a bed and dressers. To some it may not seem like something you are responsible for. That is not the case. When you move out of that room or that barracks that stuff still needs to be there in good condition. We are responsible for the care we provide and are held accountable for the care given if something goes wrong or a patient isn’t happy. It is about the impact of our work and the difference our works make (Porter-O’Grady and Malloch, 2013).
If my weapon had been picked up by someone from someone else in the military on the Camp Leatherneck, then they would have turned it into their higher chain of command, in which would have been turned over to the military police. At that point, I would then be breaking UCMJ and most likely lose rank and pay. It could also lead to a higher punishment and being discharged from the Marine Corps. If my weapon had been picked up by someone outside of the military, it could have been sold to be used to harm other military members or used by an insurgent to hurt men, women, and children. Camp Leatherneck could be locked down and searched until the weapon was found. In which, for the convoys outside of the Forward Operating Base (FOB), would not be able to enter. This could leave them open to attack and could lead to cost of lives and money to the government. Losing a weapon could cost your unit and could cost a lot of people valuable time, which is precious in Afghanistan.
I learned no matter how high I climbed, I was always responsible to somebody, or for something. Having the capability to explain what goals have been met, and what needs to be accomplished, is a great advantage for workplace cohesion. Acquiring the ability of always being where I need to be, when I need to be there, and what I need to be there with repeatedly allows tasks to be accomplished in a proficient and timely manner.
