Key Term and Why You Are Interested in It
ISO is a system of international standards that is serving and supporting many facets of the industry today. Starting in the manufacturing arena to add standardization to units and measurements as products move from one country to another in different stages of production, ISO ensures that dimensions are the same no matter what country the product is manufactured in. This key concept interested me because I work under ISO 9001:2008 standards daily. Our processes, patient care, and performance improvements measured by the ISO standards have become ingrained in my organization’s culture.

The newest standards are ISO 26000, which standardizes social responsibility, and ISO/IEC 27001, which is a developed management system to standardize information security (ISO, n.d.). The most well-known and best-selling standard of the ISO governing body is ISO 9000, which was developed in 1987 (ISO, n.d.). ISO 9000 is for quality management standards. Quality management includes standards that help the organization identify processes that can be developed and employ constant performance improvement. ISO 9000 has been utilized by many national and international companies to constantly improve performance and processes, but ISO 9000 usually involves a manufacturing company.

ISO, known for developing standards for many disciplines of business, also developed standards for healthcare; in 1996, a hospital in Louisiana was the first American hospital to adopt ISO 9001 (Bird, 2001). A lack of focus on innovation, quality and continual improvement causes many companies to falter. As forward thinking companies strive to maintain their competitiveness in the marketplace, various tools are available to assist in meeting customers’ needs. The focus of this paper is on two of these tools, the Baldrige Criteria for Performance Excellence and the International Standards Organization’s (ISO) 9001:2015 set of quality standards. Each are deployed with somewhat different goals in mind, yet they are not contradictory to each other. In fact, they can even be used in conjunction with one another. In the following passages, readers will get a brief overview of both the Baldrige Criteria and the ISO 9001:2015 standards, the overall goals of each, and a description of the similarities and differences between the two. Although incorporating similar elements, the differences between the Baldrige Performance Criteria and the ISO 9001:2015 standards create the potential for greater satisfaction and continual improvement in organizations when used in combination with each other.

Quite informative, your post, I found it interesting that the quality improvement initiative dates back to the 19th century, and with whom it all began. Today the standards as you stated, are being set and monitored by the Joint Commission and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid in all settings, including durable medical equipment. Patient awareness plays an integral part in the quality of care as well. After an inpatient stay, most facilities have their patients complete a 10-page survey surrounding their care. That gives a first-hand account of the areas that mean the most to the person receiving care. Excellent work!

Overall, this ISO is not the ideal model but can be useful as said earlier because of its framework and general concepts. However, it does not inform the standards, just the components; lack of direction with measures, with not clear definition of what is good or not and it has a static structure, not involving for an implementation or development.
