A History of the World in 6 Glasses Section 1: Beer: Beer was not invented, it was discovered. Exactly when the first beer was brewed is unknown but there was almost certainly no beer before 10,000 BCE. The rise of beer was closely associated with the domestication of the cereal grains rom which it is made and the adoption of farming. Beer originated in the Fertile Crescent in Egypt and Mesopotamia. To beer drinkers in the Neolithic period, beer’s ability to intoxicate and induce a state of altered consciousness seemed magical. This caused them to believe beer was a gift from the Gods. Since it was a gift from the gods, it was presented as a religious offering in religious ceremonies, agricultural fertility rites, and in …show more content…
Tea: Tea began as a luxury drink, and then trickled down to become the beverage of the working man. The story of tea is the story of imperialism, industrialization, and world domination. According to Chinese tradition, the first cup of tea was brewed by the emperor Shen Nung. Before tea was a beverage, it was used for medicinal purposes and foodstuff. Tea became a daily drink in China around the third century A.D. As the Industrial Revolution of 18th and 19th centuries gained steam, tea provided some of the fuel. Factory workers stayed alert during long, monotonous shifts thanks to welcome tea breaks. The beverage also had unintended health benefits for rapidly growing urban areas. Chewing leaves and rubbing them on wounds were ways that tea was used for medicinal purposes. Coca-Cola- In May 1886 John Pemberton invented a drink, Coca-Cola, by accidentally stumbling on the right combination of ingredients while trying to devise a cure for headaches. Pemberton was an experienced maker of patient medicines, which were hugely popular in America in the late nineteenth century. The name was coined by one of Pemberton’s business associates, Frank Robinson. He also contributed to the promotion of the drink by sending out tickets for free samples and putting up posters and banners that read “Drink Coca-Cola, 5c.” Robinson also developed the famous logo for Coca-Cola, which appeared in newspaper
The creation of beer can be dated back to over 5,000 years ago in ancient Mesopotamia. Located in the South of Mesopotamia , the cultivation of cereals also around the time of the creation of the first forms of writing, the Sumerians were practicing the art of brewing beer. Artifacts excavated from the ruins of ancient cities prove that brewing beer was already an established custom. Around 4,000 years ago, there was also evidence of Chinese brewing their own beer from rice, honey, grapes, and hawthorn fruits. However the Sumerians made their beer from twice baked barley bread. Beer allowed a more abundant sharing of an ingredient not very easy to cultivate at the beginning. In fact, it was easier to do a lot of beer with a bit of grain that much bread with the same amount of grain. Many beers are made by soaking breads fermented, cooked in water and leaving ferment the mixture.
Often associated with slavery and Johnny Depp's character Captain Jack Sparrow, rum and other spirits are referred to, as Tom Standage writes in A History of The World in 6 Glasses, “The liquid embodiment of both the triumph and the oppression of the first era of globalization,” (Pg. 111). This is statement is supported by Rum’s history of being used as currency to buy slaves and the large amount of cultural interactions behind the history of these distilled drinks.
Tom Standage was born in England in 1969. He graduated from Oxford University, and has written many books since, including The Victorian Internet, The Turk, The Neptune File, A History of the World in 6 Glasses, The Future of Technology, An Edible History of Humanity, and Writing on the Wall. In the city of Atlanta, in 1886 the world was forever changed by one individual. Dr. John S. Pemberton articulated a syrup that when combined with carbonated water became the world’s leading beverage Coca-Cola. Frank M. Roberson, Dr. Pemberton’s bookkeeper and partner named the beverage. In addition, he is credited with writing out the Coca-Cola logo in his handwriting which was trademarked and is still used today (About Us Coca-Cola History, n.d.). On August 16, 1888, Dr. Pemberton passed away from cancer only five months after filing a petition for incorporation of Coca-Cola Company (King & Dobbs, 2015).

It was 1886 in Atlanta, Georgia, the Civil War was finally over and war veteran and pharmacist Dr. John S. Pemberton was about to create what would become the world’s most popular sparkling drink. Pemberton was looking to make a profit and, since the temperance movement prohibited alcohol, recognized that there was an increasingly large market for soda fountain drinks. Making a syrup that he brought to local pharmacies to mix with carbonated water, he invented Coca Cola. During its first year on the market Coca Cola averaged about 9 servings a day in Atlanta; now, daily sales average about 1.9 billion a day, worldwide. Much of this widespread success is due to the exceptionally affective Coca Cola advertisements used throughout the
John Stith Pemberton invented Coca Cola, in 1886. Asa Candler bought the formula and brand in 1889. The company was incorporated the Coca Cola Company in 1892. Its famous bottle, which remains the signature shape of Coca Cola today, was first manufactured in 1916. Coca Cola expanded overseas, in 1928, when Robert Woodruff, introduced Coca Cola to the Olympic Games. Coca-Cola became an invention in 1886 by the hands of a pharmacist named John Pemberton, also known as "doc." He had participated in Civil war, and toward the end of it, he decided that he needed to come up with an idea that would bring him commercial success.
The founding of Coca-Cola was unusual. The original leadership began Coca-Cola’s long journey to success. John Stith Pemberton, an Atlanta pharmacist, invented Coca-Cola in 1886. Made of coca plant (cocaine) and cola nut, Coca-Cola was sold as a headache medicine. Originally this soft drink brand was not fizzy and may have been accidentally carbonated. Frank Robinson, Pemberton’s partner, had a printer that produced two different colors at the same time. He took over advertising and marketing for Pemberton Chemical Company, which owned Coca-Cola. Credited for naming Coca-Cola, Robinson wrote out the logo in Spencerian script then later was involved in the sale of the company.
Coca-Cola was found in 1886 product of an experiment by an Atlanta’s pharmacist, Dr. John S. Pemberton. Coca-Cola was only syrup and carbonated water although it was very tasteful drink to everyone who sampled it. “Dr. Pemberton’s secret consisted of the use of African Kola Nut extract and coca leaves, which are both strong stimulants”. His product was sold as syrup that would help people feel better. One tea spoon had to be diluted in one glass of water; his main idea was to create something that taste better than plain water.
Coca-Cola was founded by an Atlanta pharmacist by the name of Dr. John S. Pemberton in 1886. Dr. Pemberton moved from Columbus, Georgia, in 1869 to Atlanta. In 1885 he set up a chemical laboratory in Atlanta. Pemberton created flavored syrup that was mixed with carbonated water. Researchers states that Pemberton added caffeine to the syrup so that it could be marked as a headache remedy. The syrup that Pemberton created was known for relieving indigestion and exhaustion in addition to being refreshing and exhilarating (Advameg 2017). Dr. Pemberton’s partner Frank M. Robinson was known for the creating of the beverage name Coca-Cola, as well as designing the trademark. Dr. John Pemberton later on died two years after creating the amazing beverage of all times. After Pemberton died the business was later sold to an Atlanta business man by the name of Asa G. Candler. Coca-Cola is considered to be the best selling beverage in the world.

Robinson created a distinctive tasting soft drink that shortly became known as “Coca-Cola.” The new beverage quickly spread throughout Atlanta, Georgia, under the leadership of businessman Asa G.
