As Novalis a famous German poet and philosopher once stated, “A hero is one who knows how to hang on one minute longer.” A hero shows worry as all people do, but can push through and be courageous. A hero works for others, not thinking of themselves. Because heroes are people who put others before themselves, going above and beyond without the worry of their own safety. Heroes are people who put others before themselves. Such as on 9/11, when a call was given out for boats to come rescue people off the island of Manhattan, where the terror attacks happened, as pictured in “Boatlift” Vincent Ardillo calls out to his wife “I gotta do something.” This represent heroism because Ardillo is not thinking of how he will be impacted, but rather …show more content…
Likewise, Martin Luther King Jr. also fought for the rights of African Americans, one way he did this was by going around and saying speeches, in his Cleveland speech he adds “I you can’t fly, then run, if you can’t run, then walk, if you can’t walk, then crawl, whatever you do, you have to keep moving.” By saying this MLK Jr. is being an example of a hero because he, despite facing many challenges, MLK Jr. continued to fight for what he believed in, persisting and inspiring many others. Also MLK Jr. spread his ideas not only to help him, but everyone impacted by racism in America. However, Heroes do not worry of their own safety, instead they do not let fear stop them from reaching their goals. For instance in “Man in the Red Bandanna”, Welles Crowther an everyday equity trader sacrificed his own life to save many others. He took control in the chaotic 9/11 aftermath and led others to safety. Richard Weiss, one of the people who lived because of Crowther’s actions quotes him “I heard a voice, ‘Take this staircase.’ He was lining people up, ready to evacuate.” This quote represents Crowther’s heroism because Crowther did not hurry down, thinking of nobody but himself, disregarding the lives of all the other people in the building, but stayed behind, disregarding his own life. Furthermore Crowther remained calm and assured people,
A hero is defined as someone who in the face of danger steps up and puts others needs before theirs, expecting no reward in return. In the article “What Makes a Hero?” by Phillip Zimbardo, the author expresses that everyone has the ability to help others, whether it is a small deed like leading a guiding hand to someone who needs it, or it can be as intense as pulling someone out of a burning car. The writer attempts to emphasize the importance of doing the right thing by stating, “Few people do evil and fewer act heroically.” (Zimbardo). In addition, heroes act not for the fame or the money, but for their own satisfaction. Knowing they helped save a life is all the reward they could ever want. “The key to heroism is a concern for other people
As Novalis, a famous German poet and philosopher once stated, “A hero is one who knows how to hang on one minute longer.” A hero does not show worry, but pushes through and can be courageous for only a little while longer than everyone else. Because heroes are people who put others before themselves, they must go above and beyond and not worry about their own safety.
Merriam Webster dictionary defines heroism simply as great courage. Bravery, honesty, valor, character, gutsy and bold are all words that basically mean the same as heroism. The definition of a hero is a person, who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. People in everyday life show these qualities and can be found in many places. A teacher can be thought of as a hero by students, a mother by a child, a coach by players, or a world leader by citizens. Some people like to think of sports figures and celebrities as heroes. Firefighters, police, doctors and members of the military are great examples of people who exhibit great heroism every day. Heroes can be found anywhere throughout the country. They can be found in government, hospitals and importantly the ones keeping our country safe. This paper will focus on heroism and attempt to show how a hero can be anyone who exhibits actions that are above and beyond the norm; they could be cops, firefighters, parents, teachers, athletes or even celebrities. These people could go day to day protecting citizens and loved ones from dangers and peril or people simply performing acts to inspire others to do the same.
“ A hero is somebody who voluntarily walks into the unknown .” When a hero keeps on going and never stop trying that makes them a hero. When a hero puts there life at risk just to save another life, even though it could mean losing their own that makes them a hero. Someone who goes through great challenges but never stops trying is a hero. Ahero is not someone who gives up or someone who is selfish.Heroism is being selflessness, someone who makes sacrifices, and someone who never gives up.
Panic struck the people of New York City. Black, billowing smoke began to rise. The beloved Twin Towers had been destroyed. During the chaos and madness that occurred on the day of 9-11-01, some people acted and did all they could to help those around them, even though they knew obstacles stood in the way. Those people are true heros. Heroism is acting in times of need when obstacles may stand in the way, being willing to sacrifice everything, and not letting setbacks keep from achieving goals and being an inspiration to others.
Arthur Ashe once said, “True heroism is not the urge to surpass others at whatever cost, but the urge to serve others at whatever cost.” Someone who stays strong in their heart and shows selflessness towards others even though he or she could be in the risk of personal risk and danger is what makes a true hero. Anyone could be recognized and admired as a hero if they could, but there's a big gap in front of that because it adds on with the hero showing compassion in spite of the obstacles that they are faced with. It could make someone more heroic than he or she ever was by just showing selflessness to others. Clara Barton put herself in danger to treat the wounded during the Civil War and not only that, but she founded what is known today the American Red Cross (History.com). Harriet Tubman helped many slaves to freedom in the north, also placing herself in peril. (History.com). Florence Nightingale, who was a nursing innovator did the similar as Clara Barton, but during the Crimean War (History.com & Biography.com). All of these women stressed the idea of helping others before they did so for themselves, but that took bravery to do so. Whether the challenges that a hero has to endure, a true hero puts others before themselves no matter what the position he or she is set in.
To Start off, what is a hero? Well a hero to me is someone who is admired or idealized for courage and outstanding achievements. To be a hero you have to have concern for others. intelligence is the most important reason of being a hero.
An example of this is Harriet Tubam. She was a southern slave who helped over 500 slaves escape to the North. Harriet
Heroes are selfless and go out of their way to save other people. For example, teachers who spend their lives educating students so the
Rosa Parks is an example of a hero, because or her refusal to move seats on the bus, that started to end segregation. Rosa Parks had gotten on a bus, and was told to move seats so a white person could sit down, but Parks deliberately stayed put, magnifying the situation because she thought it wasn’t fair, “her refusal to surrender her seat to a white passenger on a public bus Montgomery, Alabama, spurred on a citywide boycott and helped launch nationwide efforts to end segregation of public facilities” (Rosa Parks Biography 2). This shows that the little things you may think need to be changed, that if you stand up for yourself, you may become a hero to people who agree with your side of the issue. Rosa Parks didn’t think that how she was being treated was right, so she acknowledged the issue, so it could be equitable for everyone. Another example is that Parks even said herself, she couldn’t put up with this problem any longer, “later, Rosa recalled that her refusal wasn't because she was physically tired, but that she was tired of giving in” (Rosa Parks Biography 10).
“A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles.” -Anonymous. A hero is someone that acts in the time of need to help others. They can risk their life for other people, their beliefs/rights/religion, and their freedom.
To me a hero is a person who goes toward the danger and try to fix it, for example, the armed forces they are out there where ever they are risking their life every single day and going to sleep at night scared for their life, and then when they come back from the war they are so traumatized of everything they were seen or experienced out in the field. Another example is the police and
People who give their life for others are true heroes because this takes much courage. These acts of self-sacrifice are present throughout the world. For instance, many people join the army knowing that they are putting their life on the line, but to them this is worth all the while because they do not mind sacrificing their life for their country and the people they hold dear. Even ordinary people are known to perform these courageous acts of self-sacrifice; for example, there are many stories of people shielding loved ones and strangers from gunfire, and losing their life in the act.
A hero is someone who is very brave. For instance, a person who is brave enough to speak their mind about controversial issues is a hero. For example, Martin Luther King, Jr. stood up for all the colored people who did not have a voice. He was aware of the possible consequences of his actions, which included putting himself in danger; however, he still stood up for what he believed in. He was a hero because he bravely sacrificed himself to help others have equal rights in America. When a person does good things for someone else in need they are showing they like to help others. When people help others in need that makes them a good person and you never know who what will happen if you help that person. In the end, a hero is a role model to people all over the world who want to be like him.
The actor Tom Hanks once said, “A hero is somebody who walks into the unknown.” When people stand up to challenges, despite not knowing what could happen next, they show heroism. In fact, anyone could back down when things become challenging, but heroes reflect optimism even when all’s lost. Instead of belittling one’s abilities like others might, a hero encourages them to exceed expectations. These qualities of a hero are everywhere, just everyday people being their best self. A true hero is perseverant, reflects hope, and does not doubt what people can do.
