This paper is an attempt to assist other students on how to become successful in college. There is a lot of pressure in college and course topics may seem difficult to understand or retain but there is always assistance in your college. The first topic I would like to cover is stress. Here is something to keep in mind if stress occurs. Did you know that stress could make you lose your short term and a long-term memory? Well it can. Therefore, in order to think clearly, to learn while in class, and retain the information learned in courses you will have to lesson your stress. For instance, you are in class and trying to listen to the teacher but you cannot. This is because your mind is thinking about other things that makes you stress out e.g. other classes, upcoming test, and wondering is mom giving away all your favorite pants to the Goodwill. These stressors are making you lose focus and unable to think clearly and your retention is completely gone. Now, we need to make sure stress does not happen to you. Again, do not let stress control you! When stress occurs take long deep breathes and tell yourself that everything is going to be okay and make sure you stay calm as well.
Another piece of advice that may assist a college student in becoming successful is good work ethic. Work ethic means to work hard and give your all in doing the best that can be done while in college. You need to believe in yourself, work hard, and giving your all. Working hard should
Stress is a word that many college students hear on a daily basis; it is a concept that resonates with all students, regardless of age or major. People of all ages experience stress at various times in their lives, but college is a particular time when an individual can be plagued by heightened levels of it. At any given time, a college student might feel academic, financial, and social strains, yet they might not possess the resources to satisfy the demands of these stressors. Accumulation of these stressors (and stress in general) can have a negative impact on the lives of college students, but authors of a recent scientific study made an attempt to find the best techniques for reducing stress in college students.
The first two chapters of “What the Best College Students Do” cover several topics. Throughout the chapters, the lives and experiences of different college students are explored. A reoccurring theme in the book is the concept of learning styles. Essentially, the three learning styles are memorization, comprehension, and strategy. According to the author, comprehension is the most effective style of learning. While everyone will possess one of these three learning styles, it is not impossible for someone to adjust to another style. Additionally, the author elaborates on academic ideas such as independence, grades, and outside influences.
Many people think college is a carefree place, full of fun and games for students. In reality ,the majority of students are bogged down in school work rushing to meet their deadlines for homework assignments projects, and even cramming study time for exams and quizzes. On top of that , college can be pretty costly. Therefore, this is normally a highly stressful period for most people in their lives. In the essay “College Pressures”, the author William Zinsser mentions how students go through so much stress and pressure from different aspects of college. He discusses the pressures that college students faced in the late 1970’s that are still happening now in today's society . Zinsser focuses on four main pressures that students face as they enter the college realm, which includes economic, parental, peer, and self-induced pressures. It's not only the pressure but In the essay “College Is a Waste of Time and Money” by Caroline Bird , the author attempts to persuade her readers that colleges are overflowing with students who don't belong there and that college education is a useless endeavor that is often forced on students. Between the money it costs, the time it takes, and all the pressures from the different aspects of college it can be pretty overwhelming to think about. The question is how could we reduces the struggle and tension that college brings upon students.
Although the stress of college students is largely present, it is just another part of college. The real epidemic here besides added pressure on female students is how students as a whole can reduce the amount of stress that is put on them by personal practices. The hardships that students are going through now will be prevalent in the future when they become very successful from all the aspects they were challenged
The purpose of this experiment is to evaluate the effects of stress on college students and their cognitive processing. If stress negatively affects cognitive thinking, then at least 80% of the students will score lower on quiz #2.
In the course the class went over the characteristics of successful students and struggling students. The first thing of a successful student that influenced me, was accepting personal responsibility. A person has to see themselves as the cause their outcomes and experiences. If someone sees themselves as a victim, success most likely will never come to them. Employing interdependence I learned is another important characteristic of a successful student. In college a person has to build mutually supportive relationships to help them achieve their goals. People who refuse assistance from others who could help most likely will have a difficult time achieving success. The most important thing I learned of a successful student was self-management. A person has to plan and manage their time wisely
Often times people go into college with their eyes closed tightly, meaning they are totally unprepared for what lies ahead. There are a variety of aspects that determine whether students are successful in college. Meeting basic requirements to enter college, selecting the right courses, learning how to study on the college level, and managing time are all key factors in becoming a successful college student. Throughout college life students are faced with a variety of temptations. How they choose to overcome these temptations determine whether they become successful or not in
Being successful in college is a journey and an experience, not a struggle. It is the grand experiment of our lives as we determine not only how to be successful in college but what it means to us individually. For some making connections and preparing for life afterward is the main determinant of success. For others its good grades. For me its taking away everything that there was available and then some. Success for is determined to be graduating without school loans, excellent grades and finding the proper strings to pull. To do this shall be a feat in and of itself, however, I knew this already and came expectant. First of all, finances are of ultimate importance as I need to ensure that I never end up with debt. To do this I need to maintain
I will use the ideas presented in this video; when I encounter stress in college by making sure I work on my assignments and never put them aside to the last minute. I know many times we as adults are so busy with little time to sleep.
Stress can understandably impair learning, motivation and your memory, which then all affect your overall achievement — whether your its your short term goal of passing the class or your long term goals of graduating. I can understand the feeling of having so many ideas and thoughts in your mind and not knowing how to seamlessly work through each one. While there are four main types of stress: cognitive, emotional, behavioral and physical each take a toll at you in different ways, there are things like academic issues, depression, time management, finances, and family issues that can definitely lead to stressful situations which would impair your learning. The fact is that your brain does not allow you to actually store information in your memory when you are experiencing stress. Even-though I have coped with some things, I have often still found myself pretty stressed in class. In social psychology it wasn’t so much that I was stressed about the class but rather other things going on in my life which was not allowing me to retain the material. I then would begin to think about everything I had due, my exams coming up, my social life, and work, which frankly took a toll on my mental health and would just elevate my stress. I found my motivation had changed from the beginning of the semester to the end, I

In conclusion, it is clear that being a good college student is not an easy task. It required good study habit, class attendance, time management and self-discipline. It is not easy but it worth the hard work. Because, as Jerome R. Breitenbach wrote, “the education you receive in college, and the attitude you develop, will guide you for the rest of your life. Your grades will be especially important in landing your first job, or when applying to graduate
Newth (2011) claims that modern day stress seems to be more widespread than ever causing interference with human intellect, emotional and interpersonal functioning. Therefore; I suggest that students will encounter stress and it will impact their academic performance. In this fast pace and performance driven society each organization needs well performing people.
