The Sex Discrimination Act 1984 (Cth) is the most important State law passed to protect women against discrimination. The legislation is a parliament-made law that prohibits discrimination against people because of their gender, race and other beliefs. The areas of life in which discrimination is prohibited include employment, education, accommodation and access to places and clubs.

Sexual discrimination occurs to women when they are treated less fairly because they are of the opposite sex, pregnant or because of their martial status. It also includes being dismissed from employment because of women having family responsibilities. Sexual harassment is any unwanted or unwelcome sexual behaviour. Sexual harassment towards women can be a very serious matter. It is the most common cause of complaint under the Sex Discrimination Act. Younger women usually wear the burden of sexually harassment in the workplace and at school. Sexual harassment does not have to be direct or physical. It can be in the form of:
Suggestive comments or jokes.
Sexual insults or taunts.
Requests for sex.
Unwelcome touching or physical familiarity or sexual assault.
Intrusive questions about the private life or body of a female.
Posters, magazines, screensavers, calendars and other items of a sexual nature, or
Inappropriate email messages or disgraceful material degrading women.

To write a complaint of sexual harassment, the female involved would have to write a letter to the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission within 12 months of the alleged incident. A complaint can be made by:
