Imagine this. You wake up one morning in the year 1929, in your luxurious, pricey mansion. You then make your way downstairs to eat that nice big breakfast. Then you kiss your family good bye and head off to your fancy job. You come home that evening and suddenly you’re flat broke. Meaning all your money and life’s savings vanished. Unreal right? Well it was real for hundreds of families on October 29, 1929. The day the stock market crashed and when America’s confidence was challenged greatly.

There are many things that factor in as causing The Great Depression. I believe the biggest factors to be money and confidence. Even though by year end of 1930 the stock market had recouped some of the money lost in the previous years’ loss with the devastating Black Tuesday. The US and the rest of the world would continue to feel the devastating effects of banks failing, high unemployment rates, reduced trade and purchasing of over produced goods, and a negative impact to agricultural. This would not only put a dent in the people’s confidence with the stock market and banks but also government would need to step up in a big way to get things somewhat back on track.

The America in the 1930s was drastically different from the luxurious 1920s. The stock market had crashed to an all time low, unemployment was the highest the country had ever seen, and all American citizens were affected by it in some way or another. Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s New Deal was effective in addressing the issues of The Great Depression in the sense that it provided immediate relief to US citizens by lowering unemployment, increasing trust in the banks, getting Americans out of debt, and preventing future economic crisis from taking place through reform. The time span of their journey occurred at the beginning of the great depression all the way through World War II. Seeking better employment opportunities, James traveled to Louisville. Although, his first couple trips were in vain. His resilience and determination eventually lead to a job working for International Harvester. During an era of many trials and tribulations, James found a way to support himself and his family by migrating from a rural to an urban area. How does one keep faith in a country during times of destitute and agony? In 1929, the stock market crashed. Poverty struck the country fast like the huge dust storms in the west. The new president, F.D.R, promised to relieve, recover and reform the country with various organizations. Churches and other groups set up food lines. F.D.R’s main goal was to put every American to work. The dilemmas of the Great Depression were soon set out to be handled by actions by the federal and state governments.

Historians argue what caused the Great Depression, some say it was due to the stock market, others say it may be the war debt or overproduction. To believe the Great Depression was caused by only one event is naive. It was caused by a multitude of problems that the government failed to fix.

A) The first reason that caused the Great Depression were the consequences of WW1. The Versailes Treaty caused bitterness throughout Europe and it didn’t really resolve much. The U.S. went in great debt from allied loans to other countries. The second cause was the Smoot-Hawley Tariff act. It made the highest tariff that the U.S. has ever had. It also damaged out economy. The final cause was the bad performance of the Federal Reserve.

Contrary to popular belief, the Great Depression went beyond the shore of the United States and had a major impact on multiple countries. All countries involved in trade with the United States were greatly affected- one of these being Germany. When our stock market crashed, the production of various products were put to an abrupt hault. Without the necessary money and supplies to manufacture products, there was no way to do so. Then, this resulted in the loss of jobs by many factory workers bringing the unemployment rate in the US to a mind-boggling 24.75% in 1933.

America has been through many depressions. But it took an amazing president to solve the problem. Franklin D. Roosevelt has did many things for America. He brought us out of the Great Depression and his policies has helped us all.

James Tobin had once stated, “The miserable failures of capitalist economies in the Great Depression were root causes of worldwide social and political disasters” (James Tobin Quotes). America has yet to face the dark ages of failing economy when the stock market crashed in the days of October 1929. From a child to a dying old man, everyone’s lifestyles were changed dramatically by the events of this period, the Great Depression. The Great Depression resulted from a combination of both domestic and worldwide conditions. The depression had afflicted every inch it passed by. Every nation, especially the United States, now have to find a way out.

Why did this every have to happen to the world? The great depression struck everyone in the U.S.A. it was very bad on the economy. There were many reasons of this like people taking their shares out of the stock market, the banks are losing money, and people with the last hired first hired policy.

A devastating event such as the Great Depression occured in 1929. In the month of May the stock maret had a change. Bankholders lost more than 30 billion dollars, although bankers began to regain the losses it wasnt enough. Bank failures began taking place in the 1930’s, due to uncertain banks, many people began to loose their savings. Because of the stock market crash many people from all classes stopped purchasing items. This led to a reduction in item production and a decrease in the workforce. Due to bussiness failings, the government created a tariff that protected companies in which created a high taxe charging in imports causing the decrease of trade with foreign countries. The Great depression began in 1929 with a dramatic event called that Wall Street Crash. This led to the failure of banks and businesses all over the United States. Millions of people lost all their savings and their jobs, and thousands became homeless because they could not afford to pay their rent. Some homeless families lived in shacks made of cardboard. Others took the road to look for work. (Bingham J.) As it could be imagined it was very disheartening to many as losing everything that was worked hard for. Many events took place during this time, like the Stock Market Crash, The Dust Bowl, The New Deal and also Prohibition that changed the outcome of what people could and couldn’t do.

The amount of people without jobs during the time of the Great Depression was a big problem. Unemployment was reduced 25% from the level in 1932 of 15 million people because of the New Deal. FDR had given the American people renewed faith and hope. The New Deal had saved America from dictatorship and more importantly, protected the American democracy. Programs such as the CCC, FERA, PWA, and WPA had helped by trying to decrease the amount of unemployed people. Some programs that were created had greatly help reform the nation, such as the SEC and the FDIC. These were long term and permanent programs that had a huge part of solving major problems during the Great Depression. The SEC had reformed the stock market and the Securities Act and Securities and Exchange Commision made sure the Wall Street Stock Market could never crash again. The FDIC had insured people’s money in banks and continues to do so today. The programs that were created by President Franklin Roosevelt had really helped many, especially those who were unemployed, homeless, poor, or disabled. The SSA had set up a national insurance plan that provided old age pensions, unemployment benefit, and financial support for the handicapped. One of the main reasons FDR’s New Deal was successful was because it fixed the unemployment in America. He did this by creating new jobs for people. During the Great Depression 25% of people were unemployed. That was about 13 million people(Source B). As a result of this, American families couldn’t support themselves. 4 of President Roosevelt’s solutions were the Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC), the WPA, the FERA, and the Social Security Act (Sources E,F,G). The CCC hired unemployed young men, ages 18-25, to work for a dollar a day. These men were also provided with 3 meals a day and a place to live.
