Gary Ridgway grew up like any other ordinary suburban kid. He had a problem of wetting the bed which his mother would make fun of him and embarrass him in front of family and friends. As a young teen, he was always getting into trouble such as stabbing a six year-old boy in the ribs when he was a young teen. In high school Gary continued to go down hill and get bad grades. Gary graduated high school and joined the Navy. While he was in Vietnam, he discovered prostitutes and ended up getting sexually transmitted diseases. Soon after being home from Vietnam, Gary was killing and raping prostitutes on the streets of Seattle, Washington. Gary would go on to murder about 71 young women who he targeted because they were either prostitutes or runaways. …show more content…

There are many people who choose to do bad things and break the law; however, there are people known as serial killers who take breaking the law and harming others to an unbelievable level. Murder is a very serious crime. Murders happen for many different reasons such as turf wars and drugs for gangs, by having an argument with another person and not being able to control your anger, or murdering because of a troubled past. Serial killers often come from a troubled past and seek some sort of revenge to what happened to them when they were younger. Serial killers are people who murder over and over again. There are many different types of serial killers. There are serial killers who choose to rape their victims, choose victims whom they know, choose victims because they are a different gender, choose their victims because of some fantasy that they have, or some even choose their victims to prevent them from going through what they had to go through as a young teen. There is no set description of what a serial killer looks like or if they are a woman or a man. Women serial killers tend to be more alluring with their crimes. Women tend to choose victims they may know but murder in a less heinous way. However, there are more male serial killers then women. While he was on his deployment in Vietnam he was having unprotected sex with prostitutes which led to sexually transmitted diseases. Gary had been through three divorces all which were because each one cheated on another. However, Gary's second wife claims that Gary had put her into a choke hold on more than one occasion. Throughout his early childhood until he was 19 he was still showing signs of violence to others. All three of his ex-wives all claim that Gary would make them have sex in strange places such as in public and in the forest. This is a strange sign for a person to demand these things from his ex-wives. In the year 1975 Gary had become a father to his son Mathew with his second. Gary was a good father as far as his son Mathew remembers. “Mathew Ridgway remembers his father as a relaxed man who never yelled and who took him camping, taught him to play baseball and always showed up for school concerts and soccer practices” (Hucks, 2003). To Mathew, Gary was a regular dad trying to be a part in his son's life even though Gary and his wife were divorced. Gary was with Mathew every other weekend doing outdoorsy stuff and teaching his son how to become a man. There are no records of Gary and his son ever having problems such as domestic violence or sexual
