Florence Price, Composer
The purpose of a biography is to enhance the reader’s knowledge about a particular person’s life, in this case, Florence Beatrice Price, and offer a sort of historical background focusing on significant events, accomplishments, and personal aspects of that particular individual’s life. Ideally, the writer molds complex biographical facts—birth and death, education, ambition, conflict, milieu, work, relationship, accident—into a book [or article] that has the independent vitality of any creative work but is, at the same time, "true to life." Barbara Garvey Jackson, author of the biography on Florence Price chosen for this class, has noted that the purpose of her article is

Jackson’s article seemed to portray Price as more than just a composer, but rather as a woman who successfully and honorably acquired a special talent – music. Her knowledge about Price’s life and the events that occurred during that particular era seemed to be extremely abundant. There were several mentions of historical events such as the great Chicago fire of 1871, political references, and World War I, which enhance the ambiance. Unfortunately, it seemed to me that she over did it a bit. I realize that her objective is to “…assess the cultural world in which she [Florence] grew up, her own life and professional career in Little Rock and Chicago, and the present states of study about her”, but during the course of the article, I found myself straying away from the main idea. As if I were loosing track of the importance if the musician herself, and focusing more on the intimate details that Jackson described. I assume that her purpose for inserting such irrelevant points or topics and then elaborating on them is to capture a sense of reality and cultural sympathy. Which, in a way did exactly that, but I soon became uninterested and had to force myself to continue reading.
Within this article, there is a wealth of both personal and professional information. Much of the information was on Price herself, but there were moments that Jackson elaborated on rather
Everything had began magnificently the day I attended the renaissance fair. It was the first time I’d ever been to any festival of the sort, and the air was full of magic. At exactly 10:30 in the morning, the ceremony began. The King and Queen presented themselves atop the castle’s balcony to address their people. As the beautiful royals welcomed us into their kingdom, my heart beat erratically, and I crossed the threshold with my breath held. There were so many events that I wanted to see, and activities I wanted to try; I couldn’t wait to get inside. I wasn’t just an ordinary guest, however, I had a job to do. Carrying my instrument lightly with one hand, dressed as a princess and feeling important, I walked proudly through the bustling
The Italian Renaissance was one of the most colorful, vital, and exciting times in history. Renaissance eventually comes from the French word "Renaistre," meaning "to be born again." The Renaissance was a revival or a rebirth of cultural awareness and learning among art, law, language, literature, philosophy, science, and mathematics. This period took place between the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries. The Renaissance in Italy flourished in the 15th century and spread throughout most of Europe in the 16th century.
The ten events in this book are correctly chosen. However, some of Gillon’s explanations do appear exaggerated. The most blatant example is the chapter entitled, “Gold Rush”. If the book is being true to its title, the impact of the Gold Rush was not unexpected. The Change in music culture has become nothing special compared to initially inconspicuous; Gillon gives several good arguments supporting the ten events in this book.
Between the 1300s and 1500s, Europe experienced a period of cultural rebirth known as the Renaissance, marking the transition from medieval times to modern times. The Renaissance brought new importance to individual expression, self-consciousness and worldly experience.
Rather than reading something that brings you down, or reading something that has no purpose, when you read something inspiring it makes people feel good or encourages them or even makes them smile. When a writer writes a biography about a persons life yes the he or she tries to portray the truth but he or she is also giving inspiration to the reader or even giving them a role model to follow. That is why it is more important that the biography is inspiring rather than being impartial. To get the reader inspired and to maybe make a change in the
Florence Beatrice Price was a meritorious musician, who confronted many challenges in the path to becoming the first African-American woman to have her compositions performed by a well-known symphony. Florence’s began her musical writings at a young age, rapidly progressing into an award-winning, published composer. Although her contributions were eclipsed by the desire for other types of music soon after Ms. Price’s death, her music is worthy of great recognition and her accomplishments are not to be forgotten.
“I would sometimes go with mother to her office and Mme. Walker was my great-great-grandmother, but she was this larger than life figure. The silverware that we used everyday, when I was growing up, had her monogram and our china, for special occasions, had belonged to her. We had this big, beautiful, silver punch bowl that my mother made eggnog in, every year at Christmas time. So, I knew little things about Mme. Walker and obviously the business was still there, but I really more interested in her daughter, my namesake, A'Lelia Walker, who was part of the Harlem Renaissance, so I really did some of my first writing about her daughter, A'Lelia Walker. Then, when I was in graduate school at Columbia University in
Florentine and Rose-Anna do not seem similar in any way; many may argue to say that they are similar due to the amount of time and effort they put into providing for the family. I however, do not think that is a valid reason to say they are similar in any way. The reason being, they provide with different intentions. Rose-Anna obeys and believes in her role as the mother of the family and that is all; Florentine however, sees herself outside of the family sphere. Rose-Anna provides for the family because that is her duty as a mother; to provide for the family in every way she can (cooking, cleaning, sewing, etc). Florentine provides for the family financially, but she also identifies herself as more than just the daughter of Rose-Anna and Azarius.
Against the jeers and taunts of naive audiences and ignorant critics, Josephine Baker was resilient. During her second miscarriage, medical challenges, and emergency surgeries, Josephine Baker remembered her purpose, to entertain, and her reason for living, to love. Rising from an abusive childhood to, as Ernest Hemingway personified her, “the most enchanting woman you could ever meet”, Josephine Baker possessed the strength to live for life’s highest honors, not its deepest pains. Unbeknownst to many, Josephine Baker was a tactical genius and a fortress against failure. She entranced the world and defined culture in the Gilded Age. If I had only one minute to spend with Josephine Baker, I would thank her for being a shining example of victory for all
Florence Nightingale was born in Florence, Italy. Her parents named her after the city she was born in. She was born on May 12,1980, she was raised mostly in Derbyshire England. Many people when they hear Florence Nightingale think about her as a nurse and for her fight for better hospital care. Florence did a lot more in her life than achieve better hospital conditions, and become a nurse. She was a brilliant mathematician, and used statistics to apply them to achieve her reforms. Florence was a well-educated woman in a number of fields other than math;
A biography is important in understanding and artist and Portelli does make a case because talks about the artist and her life. Talking about her hardships as well as how her music was about her life. Portelelli says mostly her biography was made in some of her song and covers. Representing her past and present and how she changed. Portelli says how her music is like a biography and how the singer Loretta Lynn’s wanted people to know her story through music. Also we as human want to connect to artist and know about them, as well as relating to them by their
A biography is defined as a written account of another person 's life. The key word in the definition being another person’s life. Biographies are full of great information that can often times make history fun and exciting. Historical phenomenon is often portrayed through biographies allowing us to see how society has developed over time and how the past and present may be similar. Although biographies are full of information often times it is impossible to prove them to be true because they aren’t written by the person themselves. Linda Colley’s The ordeal of Elizabeth Marsh is a great example of an exciting biography that allows us to learn about British Imperial Rule through someone else’s eyes.
The Italian and Northern Europe Renaissances were both an important mark in history by changing the ideals of life, thought, culture, and art of the people’s of this time. In this paper I will explain the motive for change in these cultures, including the similarities and differences of the two cultures.
A post Middle Age Italy was afflicted by medieval wars and the bubonic plague. A change was needed to restore the vision of what Italy could become. This change was found within one family: the Medici’s, who helped to return the glory and influence to Florence. The Medici’s saw the value in contributing to the advancement of the greatest minds of the period. This was evident in their patronage of leading Artists such as Michelangelo and of renowned Teachers such as Galileo. The sphere of influence the Medici’s enjoyed also extended to the political arena, which happened to be heavily influenced by the Catholic Church at the time. The Medici’s were able to capitalize on the power of the Church and through this influence and the use of
During the 1400s and 1500s in mainly Italy there was a major change that took place in all aspects of life. This was called the Renaissance and was a movement that helped give rebirth to culture and the arts. This movement went away from the medieval times that had forced a feudalist system on its people. The Medieval times were a dark period in European history that saw a major decline in arts and government. This declining can be attributed to a number of different reasons. One of which was the Bubonic Plague that spread throughout Europe and Asia and killed millions of its inhabitants. This was the final nail in the medieval coffin. Throughout these times the major focus for government and the arts were all religion oriented. The Black
