The mean is the sum of all of the data values divided by the number of data values. The median is the middle number in a data set, in ascending order. The mean, 178 pounds, tells us the average weight for a football player at Center Grove high school. The median, 175, tells us the 2nd quartile, which is the “middle” value in a list of numbers. The 5-number summary consists of the minimum value, quartile 1, median, quartile 3, and the maximum value. This is the distribution of the ordered observation divided into 5 different summaries. Our group chose to select this data, the weight of Center Grove football players, because it is Tyler Amaro’s old high school. They recently won the state championship this past fall and this specific data set was sufficient for this project.

According to Black (2010:61), the central tendency can be defined as the tendency for values in the data set being analysed, to be gathered around the middle value of the data. In other words the tendency for the values in the data set to be collected around the median. There are three main measures of central tendency namely median, mean and mode (Black, 2010:76-78).

The mean is the numerical average of a set of data, one of the problem of the mean is that the mean, is affected by extreme values. For skewed distributions, the mean is not necessarily the same as the median, or the mode.
