Nowadays, the word ‘integrity’ is continually utilized to clarify the character in the literature. Integrity by the definition in the Cambridge dictionary is: “the quality of being honest”. As the dictionary indicates, usually, a lot of people utilize integrity as a synonym for the honesty, but in my opinion, the word integrity implies much more than fair being honest. American media proprietor Oprah Winfrey said: Real integrity is doing the right thing, knowing that nobody's going to know whether you did it or not. Hence, having integrity means doing the right thing in a reliable way by following own moral or ethical convictions in all circumstances, indeed in the event that no one is watching. As taking after the meaning of integrity, …show more content…
The novel that I chose is The Great Gatsby written by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald reflects how he feels about the American society in 1925 by concerning wasteful lives of four wealthy characters, Jay Gatsby, Daisy Buchanan, Tom Buchanan, and Jordan Baker, observed by the narrator, Nick Carraway. Since Nick, the story's narrator participates in the novel, it is quite different from other novels and he is the person who I think has a integrity. Briefly, Nick is an upper-class American man who attended Ivy League university and moves from the West to New York to work in the bond business. He always questions the high society even while he participating in it. Nick shows integrity in both words and deeds. First of all, Nick always remembers’ his father’s words about the criticize: “In my younger and more vulnerable years my father gave me some advice that I've been turning over in my mind ever since. …show more content…
"You're worth the whole damn bunch put together.” The line shows Nick’s disenchantment with the wealthy east coast habitat and later that night, Nick stayed outside of the Buchanans’ house while waiting for a taxi back to West Egg, too disgusted with their behavior to go inside and join them since he was the only person who pities her death and has integrity. Indeed, the clear integrity of Nick is perceived at the end of the novel. After Gatsby’s death, Nick struggled to arrange the funeral since he alone is moved by Gatsby’s death. At that point, he said, ”They were careless people, Tom and Daisy — they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into the money of their vast carelessness, or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made.” The quote indicates how materialistic Tom and Daisy are. They are debased by their wealth and perception of things that lead them to be careless. Likewise,
In The Great Gatsby by Francis Scott Fitzgerald there is a narrator named Nick Carraway. There is a debate of whether Nick Carraway is trustworthy. Nick Carraway believes these words, “It’s more that he was a German spy during the war” (Fitzgerald 48). Another example of Nick Carraway being dishonest is when he says these words to Daisy, “No, he’s not… It’s a bona fide deal. I happen to know about it” (Fitzgerald 122). On the other hand, there are other thoughts that Nick Carraway is trustworthy. Nick Carraway is a dishonest character because he believes one of the rumors about Gatsby and when Tom was on the phone, he lied for Tom saying he wasn’t talking to his mistress.
The Great Gatsby is an exceptional piece of American literature written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, in 1925. It follows the story of 32-year-old Jay Gatsby, from the perspective of newcomer Nick Carraway. He moves to West Egg, and settles down next to Gatsby, who throws lavish parties for the neighborhood. Eventually, we find out that Gatsby is pining away for Daisy Buchanan, his love five years previous. He pursues her, but it turns out to be his pitfall. In the end, Daisy accidentally hits someone, for which Gatsby takes the blame and gets shot while swimming by the husband of the woman Daisy hit. The tragic ending can be attributed to one person; Jay Gatsby. He was responsible for this terrible tragedy because he lied about his character, he refused to deal with the present situation, and he ruined Tom and Daisy’s marriage.
The Great Gatsby is a book with no limits, but also no happiness. If you take a close look into the book you can see for yourself that nobody in the book was actually happy. I believe that if you have good morals and ethics then you can achieve happiness. We see very little true happiness within the characters throughout the course of the book. Fitzgerald’s standpoint on morals and ethics in this book is that there are no boundaries. That a man can cheat on his wife, and likewise, but that person will never truly be happy. We never really see happiness at all in this book. There may be parts in the story where someone might be having fun at a certain point, but when
The word integrity means a lot and is a positive trait. To have integrity means you have a quality of being honest. Integrity is something really important in life. And people will look up to you if you have integrity.
Merriam-Webster dictionary defines integrity as, firm adherence to a code of especially moral or artistic values: incorruptibility; the quality or state of being complete or undivided. Although this is correct this isn’t exactly the complete meaning of this word. For every situation, every job, and every position this word “integrity” is defined differently. The position at which I am applying for is an Administrative Assistant, with this comes great responsibility, handling and having access to sensitive information any candidate must possess
In the 1925 novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Nick Carraway, the main character and narrator, makes himself out to be an incredibly understanding and patient man, who shuns judgement of people before genuinely becoming acquainted with them. While somewhat of a conceited statement, it, for the most part, accurately describes Nick’s appraisal of Jay Gatsby. From their initial encounter, Nick demonstrated disharmonious feelings towards Gatsby; at times Nick would laud him, and others Nick spoke considerably poorly of him. These conflicting opinions of Gatsby stem from a contention with Nick’s moral values, along with a sense of guilt that he may have brought about Gatsby’s untimely demise, playing off his moral sense of responsibility. These two senses shaped the progression of the book, explaining how Nick can portray two intensely differing sides of the same man.
A lot of people now of days lost sight of the true definition of the word Integrity. To me, the word means doing the right thing even when nobody's looking; do you have the integrity to do something right even when someone isn’t patting you on the back congratulating you. Some people may cut corners or cheat their way through life but it never really get them anywhere. Integrity, is what you do when nobody's looking. It’s who you are when you’re alone.
Its the roaring 20's and the thick stench of moral decay is filling the air! The men are getting richer, and the woman are becoming easier then ever before. The cold war is over and its time to celebrate! Alcohol might be banned but don’t fret there are plenty of underground saloons to fill up your time. Your mistress is calling and your wife is at home with the kids. Let lose and go have some fun! That's what your wife has been doing with the new neighbours. It isn’t the 20's any more and almost a 100 years

Integrity in my words is exemplifying a life of honesty, so that it bear a resemblance to that of Christ. I believe God is integrity. His life exemplifies the characteristics of integrity. The week readings indicate integrity is maintaining consistency in our deeds and actions, how we live on Sunday at church and how we live on Monday at work. Joe E. Trull and James E. Carter refers to modern dictionary which defines integrity as, “soundness, adherence to a code of values, the quality or state of being complete or undivided.” He goes on to reference Charles Swindoll he state, “When one has integrity there is an absence of hypocrisy. The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald follows a wide ranging cast of characters, each with unique qualities, and almost entirely made up wealth. From Tom and Daisy to Jay Gatsby himself, readers follow the story of money and its side effects on how people think, act, and behave. Told by Nick, a member of the middle class, readers are able to see through Fitzgerald's eyes on opinions such as the pursuit of wealth and why it is a useless path to follow.
Currently in today’s world, rich people get whatever they want and often get away with things a middle class person would not get away with. It has been this way for a while now. In Fitzgerald’s greatest novel, “The Great Gatsby”, there are many times people should have gone to jail for something they did wrong or have been punished for but they were not. Why? Because they have money and money can get them out of the situation that they may be in. The goals and morals are different for every person.
