Intervention
Social work intervention is the practice of working with people in a different ways supporting them to become more independent. While working with P I had to develop a professional relationship using a person centred approach. Person centred approached (PCA) was developed by Carl Rogers (1961) and is psychodynamic approach used when working with people. For PCA to be effective there needs to be three main principles that are I had to use be understating, give unconditional positive regard and be genuine.
With this family I firstly had to develop an understanding of the support the mother required for change to take place. It was necessary for P to understand what type of support she required for me to support her to independence.

Therefore, I was going to have a conversation with P and understand if she was aware of what she was experiencing with her new partner R. In her new relationship, she identified that she was being emotional and socially isolated. She informed me that R forced her to change her number restricting her from communicating with her friend, and retracting her social activities preventing her from going out. Therefore, the next time visit I had I world refer her to a domestic abuse service. Who are more experienced and qualified to provide the level of support that she requires (PCF 7).
Working in partnership is a necessary component of social work intervention and practice (PCF 8). Working with other professional is a necessary component of intervention which is good practice and providing services for family to become independent (Fouché, 2015).
She also made me aware of other circumstances she had experienced with lead me to raise safeguarding concerns with my PS and Children services. These were: That R controlling behaviour was detrimental to B health conditions due to her heart condition, R emotional abuse is effecting P psychologically; and R takes B and P is not allowed to know where they have
Having the opportunity to hear from a variety of professionals in the social work field was the perfect addition to our course syllabus as many of my classmates are approaching their helping careers. For me personally, these speakers were able to reinforce what I desire to study during graduate school. The speakers were also able to provide me with different avenues I may want to study or pursue for a job opportunity once I have my masters degree.
When working in a field of expertise the experts in that area need to know what defines that field. Social work, with its roots over a hundred years old, started out simply offering assistance to others, has grown and changed, and is currently reconnecting with its roots (Bisman, 2004). Bisman (2004) emphasizes the importance of being an advocate of justice and keeping the field focused on the “social” part of social work. This push to keep social work focused on the needs of others defines social work today. Social work focuses on providing aide to the needy and increasing awareness of those that are oppressed.
This essay will identify key issues facing the client system and will demonstrate an intervention plan. Followed by defining the purpose of social work and the identification of the AASW Code of Ethics, in regards to the case study. Lastly, key bodies of knowledge will be identified and applied to the case study.
This section of the paper will discuss the definition of social work, values associated with social work and arguments for and against the use of systems theory in social work practice. Social work can be described as a field of study that encompasses individuals and their environment. Social work can be defined as work trained professionals do to elevate stressors of individuals so they may become more self-sufficient and empowered to live to their fullest potential.
The journey towards the attainment of the Bachelor of the social work degree has been an enlightening and educational experience, as the individual is exposed to the realities of many social and political issues in the society. As a student, I ventured into the degree, with minimal insight as to how the degree can influence and shape the way I perceive the social world, and the way I relate these matters to myself. However, throughout my endeavour, which encompasses years of theoretical studies, and two intensive placements at two drastically different organisations, I believe I have accumulated the bare minimal knowledge to possess a solid foundation about the unfairness and inequality that people in disadvantaged conditions face. Social workers are predominantly found in welfare organisations which Howe (as cited in Limber, 2015) suggested largely influences the practice, direction and values of the social worker, and impacts on their ability to act autonomously (Lymbery, 2015). During my placements, there was a dominant theme that frequently stood out and enticed my attention. This was the accepted practice of focusing on the individual’s problem, as opposed to the social problems that existed and the lack of acknowledgement about the social restrictions of the human agency that limited self-determination. The realization that organisations were managed this way was important in ensuring that I made a proactive effort to understand and untangle the reasons behind such
This investigation takes place if there is reasonable cause to suspect that a child is suffering, or is likely to suffer, significant harm. I took part in a strategy discussion which involved the child’s social worker, the team manager, the police, health and the referring agency, meeting shortly after receiving the referral. All professionals contributed information they had from their own agency and came to an informed decision together. The strategy discussion gave the professionals the chance to work collaboratively to decide if there were grounds to initiate a section 47 investigation (Children Act 1989), make decisions about what further information was needed, if an assessment has been completed and how this will be obtained, what immediate and short term action was required for the child and who will do what by when. This type of collaborative working is extremely important in child protection, and if these agencies had not have come together quickly, whether face to face or over the telephone, then this would have considerably slowed down the process of safeguarding the child; as a single agency would have had to ring around to gather information, possibly visit other agencies, search databases for who had involvement and try and piece together the child’s story with no
Social work is rarely working with one individual, as stated in O’Loughlin and O’Loughlin (2008); it will involve working with
One of the key things that stood out for me while doing this course and before has made me realize that social work is harder than I thought it would be. There are many critical aspects of social work that help us work with clients. One of the biggest things that have stood out for me was that helping people is more complicated than I thought there are so many critical things in the process that work to help others. Therefore it is not as easy as I expected it would be. The main reasons that I wanted to do this course was because I ultimately wanted to do to help people. I have learned that many factors come into play in the field of social work, including levels of practice, ethics and critical reflection and self-care.
The main purpose of these interventions is to assist clients’ in resolving problems and to improving their well-being. It is vital that social workers should think creatively about interventions that may be helpful to the individuals, couples, families, and groups or communities they serve. However,
Social workers need to turn themselves and the client in order to provide effective treatment. This is similar to therapeutic alliance, a social worker must be well rounded. If a social worker is completely professional the client may feel inferior and hold back their emotions and actions. We need to tune into ourselves and the client to make sure that we are both being direct in our communication, and to get in touch with feelings the client may have (Shulman, 2012, p. 72).
The one thing that I disagreed with, and will use immediately from this module is a statement that was made in the Evaluation of a Intervention. The module stated that if trained staff are not available to evaluate a intervention, contact evaluating firms for good ideas. I disagree with that statement, because I strongly believe that clients should be the ones who evaluate the intervention. The clients are the ones who are affected by the intervention, and constructive criticism offers valid and well-reasoned opinions about the work of social workers. Not all interventions may work for everyone, but if an intervention was helpful for most clients, then it should be used again in the future. Also, evaluations on the performance of the social
I graduated from college with a degree in philosophy and psychology with no idea where I was headed in life. I moved back home and found a job working at Mendota Mental Health Institute (MMHI). After almost two years I was beginning to feel stagnant and restless. I believed that there was more I could be doing with my life. Despite my pessimistic outlook on life, I truly believed (still do) that I could accomplish something meaningful that would leave a lasting impact on another life. The driving force behind this desire for change was the idea of one day being a therapist, but I was unsure how to accomplish this goal.
Social work plays an important role since it consists of the professional application of social work principles, techniques, and values in meeting various end: that is offering psychotherapy and counseling to individuals; helping groups, families and individuals to improve health and social services; additionally it is also significant in participating in the legislative process. From a broader perspective, the practice of a social worker when dealing with Hispanic elders requires knowledge of human behavior and human development, of cultural institution, social economic and interaction of all the factors. The principle of social work intervention is to offer good practice, and it is supposed to be based on the framework of decision making
The two key elements in successful practice are the social workers ability to guide clients through the phases of the change process and assist clients in making decisions that will result in enhancement of their social functioning or the improvement of a social condition (Bradford W. Sheafor, 2008, p. 52). Social workers select and use specific techniques that have been individualized to the needs and situation of the client or client group being served, and the resources that are applied to help resolve the client’s problem or concern (Bradford W. Sheafor, 2008, p. 51).
As the saying goes, “Our children are our future” and who you are as a child can determine who you can be later on in life. It is important for a child to be in a safe, comfortable and loving environment during its development so that the child can have the full advantage to become the best he can be in his future. My future career as a social worker will ensure just that. I chose this profession because of my own history. Growing up, I’ve had my share of social workers in my house. I experienced them as people who helped my family during a hard time. This is a career where I can fight for people’s rights. I will also be able to protect
