I choose “Developing an Information Literacy Workshop to Improve Evidence-Based Practice Among Nurse Practitioner Students” to summarize for this forum. The presentation was a discussion presented by Antiqua Smart on a scholarly practice project study. The purpose of the study was to develop and implement a workshop to improve Nurse Practitioner (NP) students in critical appraisal skills and clinical decision-making skills in support of Evidence Bases Practice (EBP) during clinical practicum experience and beyond (Smart, 2014). After reviewing the supporting literature for her study, the method was discussed in which sample of 20 NP students participated. The method of data collection included the use of pre and posttest surveys after attending a workshop. The workshop was over four hours that included topics such as Information Literature, …show more content…
I thought I had a good concept on the process of appraisal. However, after receiving feedback from our recent assignment, I need to sharpen these skills. Critical Appraisal is a skill set that requires practice to efficiently appraise the literature. Smart reviewed a rapid appraisal process that is not for the novice learner of the process. Looking back over the assignment, I can say that I fell into the rapid appraisal process attempting to move forward through the course in a timely manner. As I go back to the search for a different article, I will take away from the webinar refreshed processes. Regarding, how I will use in clinical practice, is sharpening my skills in actually completely Critical Appraisal. As I mentioned above, the Critical Appraisal process take time to develop the skills. A workshop such as Smart’s study would be a valuable tool in gaining the knowledge. Our research course as provided a great deal of knowledge, but to truly be effective in using EBP, one must continue to further strengthen and gain further
Evidence-based practice is the practice of making clinical decisions based off the best available research evidence coupled with the nurse’s own expertise, while also taking into account, the patient’s assessments and own personal preferences. This use of research has proven effective at providing better outcomes and lower healthcare costs, yet there are several barriers, such as time, education, and support, which prevent nurses from consistently using evidence-based practice (AJN, 2012). The top three barriers to the use of evidence-based practice are lack of time, education, and support in implementing new practices and using them consistently.
The purpose of this report is to conduct a critical appraisal of a published article.
In a world of increasing competition for health resources economic evaluations are essential to provide evidence to decision makers that allows them to make appropriate decisions regarding the best use of those resources (Cohen and Reynolds, 2008; Williams et al., 2008). Critical appraisal is the means by which the validity of this research is assessed and is essential for true evidence based practice, and decision-making (Burls, 2009; Ciliska, Thomas and Buffett, 2008).
Looking at the developments in the work organisations and consideration of whether the appraisal is fair and accurate as outlined under orthodox critique, I am of the view that, to the large extent it offers a means to overcome the traditional limitations of appraisal, due to the following reasons.

I think homemade bomb crime scenes are increasing because of the opportunities we now have. This includes the internet, which tells us how to make the bomb, and stores that sell and/or produce the supplies for making the bombs.
Itroduction: Evidence-based practice is an approach to medicine that uses scientific evidence to determine the best practice (Beyea & Slattery, 2006). As nurses perform their daily tasks they must continually ask themselves, “What is the evidence for this intervention?”. Nurses are well positioned to question current nursing practices and use evidence to make care more effective. In order to improve patients’ outcomes it is the responsibility of the nurse to transition evidence-based practice into the norm, through application of daily practice (Flynn Makic, Rauen, Watson & Will Poteet, 2014). Continual evaluation of current practice must be performed to ensure the use of evidence-based practice opposed to practice based upon tradition. The implementation of evidence-based practice standardizes healthcare practices and diminishes groundless variations within care. These variations lead to the production of uncertain health outcomes (Stevens, 2013).
Evidenced-based practice (EBP) originated in Canada from a new form of medical school which was launched during the 1970s at an institution called McMaster University (Hoffmann, Bennett, & Del Mar, 2010). This new medical program was uncommon in a variety of its methods. The primary variation was the abbreviated three year medical program which is very brief in comparison to other medical school framework (Hoffmann, Bennett, & Del Mar, 2010). Instructors conceded that the ideal concept of teaching medical students everything they would possibly need to know in regards to practicing medicine with in this program was an unattainable undertaking (Hoffmann, Bennett, & Del Mar, 2010). In response to this epiphany, instructors at this institution transformed their educational approach and focused on instruction that would provide students with the skills and tools they would need to effectively locate health information while practicing as healthcare professionals (Hoffmann, Bennett, & Del Mar, 2010). This scientific approach to healthcare is now known as evidence-based practice (Hoffmann, Bennett, & Del Mar, 2010). In the past, healthcare practitioners made decisions for patients based on personal and professional experience, hearsay, and lack of scientific evidence (White, 2004). An evidence-based practice links the
Dr. Mark Lasser’s book “Healing the Wounds of Sexual Addiction” gives insight to those who suffer from sexual addiction and to the families, friends and other people in their lives. Dr. Mark Lasser has chosen to write this book, to share with others his personal struggle and victory with sexual addiction. Dr. Lasser has written this book from a Christian view, to give other individuals hope in a difficult and growing disease, which is taking control and destroying our families. Lasser defines sexual addiction as “a sickness involving any type of uncontrollable sexual activity, and because the addict cannot control his
The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) graduates function in the role of transferring the knowledge to practice. This article reports on the development of a DNP-level EBP course to help students evaluate and apply research findings to clinical practice. (Moore, E. R., & Watters, R., 2013). The DNP
The boss’s evaluation is not good and fair for Sandy. And it is not helpful for Sandy to improve.
I am in agreement with your process of critical appraisals; identifying the steps in the research process, determining the strengths and weaknesses in the studies and evaluating the validity and credibility of the studies seem to be the root elements of critical appraisals. I appreciated the scholarly article you chose linking depression and mortality among diabetes mellitus patients, particularly because of the straightforwardness of the article. it seemed the conclusion and points of the article were straight forward and the article was easy to understand. If I could suggest any addition, it would be a way to verify the credibility of the study. maybe in this study in particular there is not much incentive for lack of credibility, but in

“Now We Can Begin” an essay by Crystal Eastman is a very powerful essay. Eastman makes the point know in her essay that an honest and true feminist no matter where she stands in the movement she will see to the woman’s fight with strength and courage and how it matters in the future and as well as its difference in its approach for the workers fight for industrial freedom. Eastman state “In fighting for the right to vote most women have tried to be either non-committal or thoroughly respectable on every other subject. Now they can say what they are really after; and what they are after, in common with all the rest of the struggling world, is freedom”
The concept of appraisal highlights the method of assessing the documents. The appraisal should be devoid of any sort of partiality. It should not favour any type of user. The appraisal is not supposed to be objective, not subjected to any sort of personal beliefs or opinions, nor shall it be based on any influenced notion.
