One of the most striking examples that is commonly known as ‘Equity, Diversity and Inclusion’ initiatives in higher education in the U.S. Since the last decade a range of proactive measures has innovated to stop various kinds of discrimination and promote institutional diversity.

UMass, Amherst is the largest public university in New England area (comprises of six north-eastern states) in the U.S. Thus, UMass attracts underrepresented students to pursue their higher education aspirations. Being a doctoral student at UMass, I have experienced and observed institutional support on the campus. has issued an Executive Order 13583 to encourage equity, diversity and inclusion in public institutions. The order is explicit about eliminating all forms of discrimination, fostering institutional diversity, enhancing the representation of underrepresented groups, awareness programs, and accountability to implement the order. Moreover, it is important to note that the higher education in the U.S. has identified, studied, and acknowledged that students from the various subordinate identities are being discriminated. Therefore, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion’ initiatives are part of public and private higher education institutions in the U.S. These initiatives/programs are great support for underrepresented students and staff members. It focused on raising institutional awareness regarding issues of discrimination, stereotypes, social justice, inclusive pedagogy and campus climate, and enhancing diversity. The office has implemented a broad range of programs and initiatives to enhance understanding, community, and belonging; moreover, the values around equity, diversity, and inclusion are merged into academic, residential and campus climate of the University. The office offers a service to report any kind of bias, discrimination or harassment through the anonymous online complaint. In addition, the Office of Student Life has appointed deans who also serve as Hearing Officers. The officers hear four types of grievances; Racial Discrimination and Harassment, Non-Race Related Discrimination, Title IX (discrimination on the basis of sex), and Sexual
