The emotions felt are the focus of the text and the plot serves as a vehicle to display these feelings. Baba, Amir’s beloved father kept a secret which was Hassan was a son to Baba and a brother to Amir. This was kept secret, however, due to Hassan being part of a different ethnic group with a different religious background which is not permitted in the society in which they live in. For this unfortunate motive, the relationships in between these three characters coiled up into a complicated situation. Amir utilized Hassan’s loyalty towards Amir, due to his position as official son and manipulates him. For instance, Hassan states “For you, a thousand times over” which exemplifies his stubborn determination to be loyal towards Amir, which gives a negative connotation to the reader. Yet this cannot destroy love and friendship, which later aggravates his regression after being acknowledged about their brotherhood. This anguish sensation was clearly demonstrated when he states that “That was a long time ago, but it’s wrong what they say about the past, I’ve learned, about how you can bury it. In addition even though Hassan’s life became distressed, his son’s birth and his enduring love towards Sohrab (son of Hassan) rehabilitated his family. “Life goes on, unmindful of beginning; end…crisis or catharsis, moving forward like a slow, dusty caravan of Kochis.” This quote clearly advocates that even in horrendous situations, happiness always could be maintained through tolerance and love with the course of time. A man is insensible to appreciate prosperity until he has tasted adversity. Adverse situations shape an individual’s identity and play a significant role in one’s life by shaping personal values, determining one’s own potential and self worth. Khaled Hosseini conveys how hardships shape individuals identities through the characters of Amir, Baba, Hassan and Ali in his novel The Kite Runner. Like every individual they go through a series of incidents and hardships that shape who they become and how well they deal with struggles in
The kite runner is best described as a story of despair in happiness. Walter Savage Landor once said “we are no longer happy as soon as we wish to be happier." Being in despair means ‘to be without hope’ and even thought hope can be a bad thing sometimes hope is all we have. People with cancer hope to survive it and beat the cancer, I hope to pass my classes this year and Amir hopes to impress his father, and later on in life to save the little boy ( Hassan's son ). Too much happiness tends to put people in despair.
Leo Tolstoy once wrote, “All happy families are like one another; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.” All families come across problems they have to face, but in the end, they will be overcome. In Khaled Hosseini’s novel The Kite Runner, the source of unhappiness within Baba and Amir’s family is their lack of understanding between each other. The characters experience a unique level of unhappiness due to the dark secrets of betrayal each harbor.
This quote symbolizes a significant change of heart for Amir. Not only does he accept the notion that Hassan was perhaps Baba’s true son, he also expresses forgiveness for his father’s deceitful actions. Amir realizes that clinging onto the imperfections of the past will not help him find peace within himself. This new perception of Hassan and Baba surprises readers, and even Amir himself. Baba, Amir’s father teaches him this lesson, “When you tell a lie, you steal someone's right to the truth. When you cheat, you steal the right to fairness... there is no act more wretched than stealing.” Amir tries to live by this rule his father has taught him. Later in the novel, Amir learns that Hassan is his half brother and that Baba had slept with Hassan’s mother. Baba betrayed Hassan, Amir, and Ali, possibly even himself. Amir strived to be like his father when he found out what his father had done he was angry with him. Amir wanted redemption for what his father had done, so he took in Sohrab.
“And the harder I laughed, the harder he kicked me, punched me, scratched me... For the first time since the winter of 1975, I felt at peace. I laughed because I saw that, in some hidden nook in a corner of my mind, I’d even been looking forward to this” (Hosseini 289). From the young age of 12, Amir Agha has been letting his guilt get the best of him. For years Amir tries to run away from his past, believing that it will make everything better. Amir soon comes to terms that projecting his guilt in a negative way only creates more problems. Khaled Hosseini’s novel, The Kite Runner, teaches the reader that guilt can either destroy a person mentally or make that person stronger through Amir, as he tries to get rid of Hassan to make himself feel better and Amir going back to Afghanistan to get Hassan’s son, Sohrab, and bring him to safety.

However, how Amir obtains his father’s affection/approval was through immoral ways. Baba on the other hand, had trouble showing his fatherly affection to Amir which causes bitterness within their father/son relationship. In this novel, we will explore how the relationship between a parent and a child is shown through their yearning of affection and how it can affect how one would be in the future.
He learned about how he was right his whole life, Hassan meant something to Baba. This brought to light who Baba really was; a man with secrets. By hiding this during Amir’s life it exhibits the reality of their relationship. Amir finds out his father and he is more alike than he ever believed possible. He finally saw his father as an imperfect human instead of the unrealistic expectation of becoming someone as honorable as Baba was seen.
